View Full Version : Why I Hate Watching New Shows
tbswatcher 02-07-2015, 07:31 PM TV Season after TV Season I check out new shows that sound interesting to me on the Broadcast Networks. Then I get attached and almost every Upfront season the new shows I watch get cancelled.
So far this year I've only lost The McCarthy's. But I expect to see Forever get cancelled in May also. Last year I lost Growing Up Fisher but was happy that About a Boy got renewed to probably only be cancelled this year. I can never seem to win.
Even though I've gotten sick of this happening it still didn't stop me from watching the premiere of Fresh Off The Boat this week. I really enjoyed it and will watch it expecting no Season 2.
As for Forever I will watch the rest of Season 1 (8 eps left) and pray for a Season 2. Even though I know it looks highly doubtful at this point.
What I try to do for the most part though with new shows I want to watch is wait until it gets a Season 2 and wait for Season 1 to come to Netflix. Last year I watched Seasons 1 and 2 of Once Upon a Time on Netflix and got caught up on Season 3 on Hulu before this fall when Season 4 began. I am currently working on Arrow Season 1 and plan to watch Season 2 and binge watch Season 3 when it comes to Netflix and hopefully be able to watch Season 4 as the new episodes premiere.
Luckily the pilots so far sound terrible so I have no worries about becoming interested in new shows this fall as of now.
Anyone else hate watching new shows on the Broadcast networks?
icecream 02-07-2015, 08:13 PM I see them mentioned on the internet, but in all the time they were on, no one ever told me that they thought shows like Community, 30 Rock, or Parks and Recreation were funny. They're not. 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation are 2 of the unfunniest shows I've ever seen. Community was a bit better but I still dropped it after 2 episodes.

I thoroughly enjoy (soon to be enjoyed) Parks and Recreation, although I could never really get into 30 Rock and gave up on Community after one season. I wouldn't describe Parks and Recreation as 'laugh out loud' funny, but its very good!
Patty Duke 02-08-2015, 09:11 AM My husband and I try all new shows with the exception of Reality.
Honestly we really dislike Reality TV and that's mostly what's on these days. The sitcoms that are on just aren't funny to us and some are crude, not appealing to us personally. The shows we've liked have gotten canceled even though the ratings were good.
We loved Longmire , it was a popular show and it was trashed. A lot of people still hope someone else will pick it up but I know that won't happen.
We loved Harry's Law and it had great rating but the network felt the viewers were older and I guess sadly that's a bad thing these days.
We also really enjoyed The Mentalist and truly feel CBS murdered that show by moving it to Sunday nights. Half the time football replaced it and when it did come on after the games, it was on late. Then they messed with the cast and changed it all up. Viewers got sick of it all.
All in all my husband and I are fed with the trash they call shows today and when they do have good shows they get rid of them. We just have a couple of shows we continue to watch, other than that we watch DVD's.
tlc38tlc38 02-08-2015, 09:34 AM The only new show I'm hoping doesn't get canned is "The Mysteries of Laura". Debra Messing is perfect in this role and it would highly disappoint me if it doesn't get a 2nd season.
I've just started watching "Fresh Off the Boat" and I like what I've seen so far. I think it'll do pretty good if they stick with the original concept and don't stray too far from the restaurant, school, & home storylines.
Tubehead 02-08-2015, 11:53 PM one show recently gotten into was resurrection I heard it was going to be canceled but it got picked up I was just getting used to this show I also just got into sleepy hollow I figure they would canceled it but it got renewed also I hope agent carter don't get canceled I just been watching it.

Netflix picked up the 4th Season w/ a production date set for March 2015.

I feel the same way about the mysteries of laura...its the only new show I started watching and I think that's because its on before my fave show law and order svu...its a great show and debra messing is great in it...I hope it gets a season 2.
comedyfreak 02-09-2015, 04:42 PM I have high hopes for The Odd Couple. Most of the comedies I watch have gotten the ax too. Hopefully Fresh gets renewed.

We can't get unlimited internet where we live so there is no way to watch shows online (Netflix Streaming). I had a Netflix account a few years ago for movies etc.. but it didn't work out. It took forever sending things back and forth and we actually received so little not to mention the defective DVD's.

Chocolate Moose 02-10-2015, 02:10 PM I also don't like to commit to new shows; it takes me a while to get inside the head of the character and I'm not willing to do that if they're going to disappear on me.
I used to record the new shows that looked funny, then when they were renewed I'd binge watch them. But my new DVR only records 5 episodes of a series so that's over. I can get a series on Free on Demand but then I have to sit through commercials.
For the record, I adored Harry's Law and found 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation unwatchable.
Blackout 02-10-2015, 02:13 PM Girl Meets World is the best new show, watch that
tbswatcher 02-10-2015, 02:45 PM Girl Meets World is the best new show, watch thatI already do watch it. That was one of the new shows I didn't wait for since I used to like Boy Meets World so much. Besides I'm more apt to watch Disney Channel Original Series since Disney Channel isn't cancel happy with their shows. It's already renewed for a Season 2 so it must be doing well enough for Disney.
Mace Dolex 02-10-2015, 06:07 PM In the past I've mostly discovered shows via reruns like 30 Rock and Modern Family (best show ever I might say) but I haven't warmed up to The Office, Parks And Rec and the only Community episode I've seen was the G.I.Joe one.
Recently I've been trying to give the new season shows a try but many have failed miserably (The Crazies, Sean Saves The World, Dads, The Michael J. Fox Show).
For the 2014-2015 season I gave Cristela a chance (sucks), The McCarhy's (boring), black-ish (got tired of it) and now Fresh Off The Boat which looks promising but I'd have to see few more episodes.
Patty Duke 02-10-2015, 09:32 PM We tried Fresh Off The Boat. In the future we'll pass.
Will and Grace Fanatic 02-11-2015, 11:40 PM These days broadcast tv shows get cancelled so easily. The reason is because the ratings even for the highest rated shows on broadcast are nothing compared to what the use to be. This is do to so many channels available(so bigger selection of networks to choose from), DVR, Hulu, Netflix, etc.
Back in the day if a show lost 2 million viewers it was fine because it was still seen by 28 million viewers. Now days if a show loses 2 million viewers it could get cancelled because now it's only being seen by 3 million viewers.
I think eventually the live viewers just won't matter and the networks will look more at DVR, Hulu, etc data to decide what shows should get renewed.
nevernude 02-25-2015, 07:20 PM They're not. 30 Rock and Parks and Recreation are 2 of the unfunniest shows I've ever seen. Community was a bit better but I still dropped it after 2 episodes.
Based on your favorite shows it is because you prefer very broad sitcoms. It is not because the shows are objectively unfunny but rather a matter of your tastes. This is also reflected by the fact that ratings are extremely high for CBS shows which tend to be watched by older demographics who prefer broad, low brow comedies as the jokes are more simple to understand. I have a feeling this community may also tend to skew the same way.
If you're more into multi-cam sitcoms of course you're not going to appreciate the fast paced single camera shows which are often more niche, subtle, dry, meta and witty. Lately ABC has found success with single camera sitcoms but notice the trend where only the family sitcoms get good ratings and all of the other ones get canceled such as Selfie, Happy Endings, Apartment 23, etc.
James28 02-25-2015, 11:50 PM An example of me avoiding a new show: Last Thursday, I watched a Big Bang Theory original and tuned out before the new version of The Odd Couple started, then I tuned back in to watch the Two and a Half Men series finale.
