I was thinking about a rug from a bath set but it appears you meant one that covers the entire floor. If you don't have nor want to rent a machine then I would have no idea on what the best way to clean it would be but I would suggest getting some Febreze for carpets to help get rid of the smell.

get some fans on that before the underlayment rots.

We rented a house a long time ago that had pale pink carpet in the bathroom & pink tile walls. Since there was tile walls, you'd think there would have been a tile floor. :lol:

If it's really bad you may have to pull up the carpet and replace it because all that dampness could cause mold. I'd wash the towels in hot water, you could wash them a second time if they are in really bad shape.
