View Full Version : Changes in Season 5
JackJanetChrissy 11-21-2014, 09:16 PM I have to say it's pretty amazing how fast they recovered from Suzanne's exit. She didn't show up at the Nov 3rd taping, and by November 20 they had advertised, auditioned, and hired a replacement ready to run lines to tape the show "Chrissy's Cousin" on Nov 25. (And apparently Jennilee read for the producers three times during that time before she was finally hired.) That's some fast work. I can't imagine anything these days turning something around that fast mid-season. I guess that was one advantage of being somewhat lo-fi back in the day.

Oh yeah. They definitely did a rush job hiring Jenilee. Which explains why a lot of people weren't happy with her and they eventually replaced her with Priscilla.
Only problem is, I think Priscilla was less interesting than Jenilee. If they were looking to replace her, they should have taken the time to look for someone funnier than Priscilla.

So you prefer GOOFY CINDY over NORMAL TERRI:lol:

Yeah. I'm watching a sitcom, right? Janet was fine as the normal one. Keep the blonde goofy. When Terri came in they had to make Janet more goofy to fill the comedy void.

Terri had her silly moments but it wasn't every episode like it was with Chrissy and Cindy

Yep, not enough. Seasons 7 and 8 strike me as being particularly bland and that's because they dropped Cindy and Terri wasn't funny enough to fill Cindy's shoes if you ask me.
How funny could it have been to have Cindy at Jack's Bistro breaking all of Jack's plates and glasses.
Keep Cindy and also make Felipe appear frequently and there might have been a Season 9.
Actually ratings went back up in Season 6 with the addition of Terri so they should have kept both Terri and Cindy. I would have liked that. The show tended to be more interesting when it had six main cast members as opposed to only five anyway, with the exception of the first 2 seasons where there were really only five, but they appeared in every episode. The show lost a lot in the last two seasons when they pared the cast down to five members and had most shows rotate with only Larry OR Furley appearing in each episode and usually not both in the same. Those episodes could have been improved with another regular in the cast. Have Cindy keep dropping in. She'd always be good for at least one laugh per episode.
comedyfreak 11-22-2014, 06:55 AM I feel the same way about Cindy, I didn't like having to get use to another roommate.

And since she was a grown woman at some point she was supposed to stop breaking stuff

Well no one was going to mistake Three's Company for Shakespeare.
Mr. Television 11-22-2014, 02:31 PM Well no one was going to mistake Three's Company for Shakespeare.
I think TC was better than Shakespeare. lol
I liked Cindy and wouldn't have mind her staying in the later seasons but I guess there wasn't enough for her to do to justify it. She wasn't even in most of the episodes of season 6, at least any that she had a large part in.
TVFactFan 11-22-2014, 02:32 PM Well no one was going to mistake Three's Company for Shakespeare.
You do think it would have gotten old to see Cindy, a grown woman coming to the Bistro and bumping into sh*T? lol

I know, she was not even seen much in the farm ep and it was supposed to HER AUNT's farm LOL

Not if they had her appearing the same amount of time as in Season 6. I'm not saying to build storylines around her, but the show needed something in Seasons 7 and 8. She and more Felipe should have done the trick in regards to keeping the laughs going. She was good for a goofy joke, which Three's could have used more of once scenes moved to the Bistro.
Anyway, watching Seasons 7 and 8, to me it just wasn't enough having only Jack, Janet, Terri, Ralph and Larry.
Mace Dolex 11-22-2014, 08:31 PM If its any consolation IMO Terri was far prettier than Chrissy and Cindy.

I could not tell if I was attracted to Cindy because she wasn't normal lol
But terri and chrissy, I will take the season 1 to 3 Chrissy but the season 4 to 5 chrissy could not compete with terri
BTW: I didn't like the season 8 hairstyle for terri

Yeah the bangs made her look older and her hair on the final episode just screamed 1980's.

My order ranking them:
1. Terri
2. Cindy
3. Chrissy

I agree with this!... Cindy's very last scene was one of her funniest. She did the "wist watch" routine which was hilarious.
Season 5 was great and the episode "Double Trouble" with Jack's twin brother Austin, might be my favorite episode.

Double Trouble is hysterical. If I read that script I would tell the writers it would never work and be so stupid. John Ritter was just as good as Lucy to pull this episode off with credibility. Don Knotts was good too but very few actors could have done this script with credibility. Its so stupid when you think about it yet it works and its because of John.
TVFactFan 12-17-2022, 02:55 AM Im surprised that the writers had the new roommate be a relative of Chrissy since the actress who played Chrissy had been demoted to phone scenes. You would think they would have had Terri start in season 5 instead of 6

Cindy was supposed to be the full time replacement. Season 5 the ratings dipped. Many of the scripts were not heavily based on sexual innuendo. The show executives wanted to sex up the show and they thought Cindy was too young for such scripts. The actress that played Cindy was much younger than the other actors. So they wrote her off the show and hired a sexy replacement and started with the sexual innuendo stuff again. The ratings did go up but not for long and then they tanked.
I think season 5 is better than any season with Terri. It has nothing to do with Terri just that the show was getting stale and stupid. I thought Cindy worked pretty well. I cant imagine replacing TV's hottest star yet it was a pretty good job considering.

I agree with this! Cindy did a good job considering the circumstances.
My favorite seasons were 1-3 and 5. Season 4 had a few bad episodes because the Chrissy character was getting too dumb. Earlier Chrissy was much better.

Yes I agree with you. I too think seasons 1-3 were best. Season 4 is hit or miss. It still had the formula. Season 5 was really good. Downhill Chaser is one of my all time favorite episodes along with the Not So Great Imposter. I hated when Chrissy was a bleached blonde bimbo who dressed like a little girl with side pony tails and overalls.
Fallon97 04-15-2023, 06:21 PM Yeah the bangs made her look older and her hair on the final episode just screamed 1980's.
It had nothing to do with the decade. Janet and Mrs Roper had a similar look in the 70s.
However, people wear bangs and curly hair in any decade. They wear bangs and curly hair now.

When they first brought in (http://popspeaking.blogspot.com/2013/12/this-post-is-very-very-special-to-me.html) Jenilee Harrison in the fall of 1980 (https://jacksonupperco.com/2015/07/07/the-ten-best-threes-company-episodes-of-season-five/), was there still within reason, a chance that Suzanne Somers could've returned? I mean, Jenilee was was brought in "temporarily" as Chrissy's kinda-sorta similar cousin.

I dont think so. When Cindy was brought in the cake was baked. Suzanne was fired and they needed a replacement. Chrissy's absence was creating confusion and impacting the show. She was fired, and Cindy was brought in. They made Suzanne do those phone in segments during the first few shows when Cindy was there. There was zero chance Chrissy was coming back. ABC just did not fire Suzanne, they engaged in punishment with making her appear on the show but banned from the set. Those scenes were filmed in a trailer far off the set. They would not even let her come near the set.
rusty spike 06-30-2023, 12:49 PM In order for Suzanne to return to Three's Company after holding out for more pay, do you think she would have had to agree to reduced pay and less scenes/lines as a punishment?
Her entire debacle was very embarrassing to the producers and the cast.

It was over and a done deal. Both sides were bad but Suzanne was way off base. She started not showing up so the cast was left stranded having to learn 2 different scripts: One IF she showed up and the other IF she did not show up. She was in the first episode in season 5 and then missing but mentioned in Justice for Jack. She appears again for $100 for what. Then she is missing again for Downhill Chaser. But she is mentioned again in that episode. Suzanne started saying she had back problems and was in pain. ABC executives hit the roof when the saw her performing shows in Vegas while claiming she was in too much pain to appear on the TC set. Even Suzanne says now she was wrong with how she did things. In her mind, there was no way Chrissy Snow would be let go because she was the star of the show. So she played hard ball. Unfortunately for her so did ABC.

No I dont think so because she had moved in and that was there way of filling the 3rd roommate. if it was a chance for her to come back I think her bed would have remained empty
