View Full Version : Random musings about Tony Alamo
wiseguy182 10-17-2014, 07:49 AM this may be a bit of an unusual thread.
Several weeks ago, I watched part of one of his shows online, and I must say, I found his singing to be surprisingly not horrible. I can actually sense shades of the late, great Conway Twitty in there. I kid you not. But maybe that's just me.
Actually, the whole part of the show I watched wasn't objectionable at all. Susan was giving away free copies of his records to ANYONE that wanted one, postage paid and everything. Speaking of Susan, does anyone know anything about her? I've always wondered if she had a part in the nefarious things that went on or if she was unaware of most of it.
Pretty remarkable because I was totally expecting to be repulsed by the program.
Btw, it seems like I'm the only one on here who has never gotten one of his pamphlets stuck on my windshield. I know this sounds weird, but I feel left out in a weird sort of way. LOL!

I haven't gotten one either, at least that I can remember.
tarheelslim 10-17-2014, 05:05 PM Earlier this year, a podcast I really like - "Oh No Ross and Carrie" - investigated what the Alamo church is like today. It was strange enough that they went back and did a follow-up episode.
Here's the first part:

I've never seen a Tony Alamo pamphlet in person. I've also never seen religious pamphlets on cars. Here in L.A., you tend to have people ask if you want one or try to hand you one rather than putting it on your car.
As for Susan, I get the vibe that she knew about the sweatshop conditions, but perhaps not about Tony's more nefarious actions. This is total speculation on my part, however. I believe all of the allegations of child abuse, molestation, threatening a judge's life, etc. all came after Susan was already gone, recalling what UM said. I'd love to know more about her involvement.
wiseguy182 10-18-2014, 03:42 AM Another big question I have is: Was Susan's dead body ever found after Tony stole it?

I saw something online confirming he had returned her body to her family, but forget which website it was on. The wiki just says that her stepfather had a court order filed for him to return the body.

Tony's wiki says her body was returned finally after 16 years, but the cnn.com citation that confirmed this has since been removed. I hope very much it is true.
wiseguy182 10-19-2014, 06:21 AM thank you. I found an article where it talks about Susan's body being returned. It's not too far down:

There are some other doozies in there, particularly about the living conditions. Showers were about once a week and the toilets were not flushed for 3 days with 60 men using them. That's a mental image I can do without. puke:

Thanks, wiseguy. I'm glad to hear the body was returned eventually. I can only imagine being a family member and what grief that would cause, particularly for her daughter.
That's gross about the living conditions. I wonder if the women and children had it as bad, since that ex-follower didn't know.
wiseguy182 10-20-2014, 01:02 AM Huh. So much for my theory Susan might have been unaware of most of the goings-on. Here is a good article I found that talks about Susan's daughter's experiences with her mother and Tony. Lots of info in here I didn't know before. This is really worth reading

Also, I remember Stack stating in the segment that it was believed Tony might be going blind. Apparently, he is legally blind due to glaucoma and has been that way since at least 1991. I don't believe he's fully lost his sight though.

That was indeed a very interesting read. Shows Susan in a whole new light and really explains why Tony couldn't continue as strong without her to steer the ship.

My latest true crime article covers two SOLVED cases. First Dennis Depue commits a crime so heinous Hollywood makes a movie out of it. Then I cover the Sinister Minister Tony Alamo who robbed graves, commit his congregation to slave labor, rape and other crimes.
WishfulDreamer 11-23-2014, 06:44 PM Thanks for the article, wiseguy. It made me really mad and has definitely changed my view of Susan Alamo. She really knew how to look outwardly charming, didn't she?
It disturbs me that Alamo still has followers, but I'm glad he's not getting out of prison to hurt anyone else.
DALLASTEXAN!! 11-23-2014, 07:38 PM I'm not surprised at all. They are con artists. Unfortunately they give Christians a bad name because they abuse their authority. They are not the only ones that do this but they took it to the extreme

Charlie99909 11-23-2014, 11:32 PM Anyone else think Bruce Campbell would make a good Tony Alamo?

Dude, totally.

The actor did a good job. This was UM at their best.

Very cool! You should write more of these. I'm entertained by your re-telling of the tales. :)
