View Full Version : I think NBC should cancel Frasier
peter may 03-13-2002, 04:32 PM Don't get me wrong I am a Massive fan of Frasier, but I do think it has lost it's way of smart & funny writing. 9 seasons, 200+ episodes is more than enough. It should go out on a high like Seinfeld did and not just churn out enough episodes to match its predicessor "Cheers". The latest episode shown in UK "Bully for Martin", was the worst I have ever seen.:(
I do agree that it might be time for the series to pack it in. No show can maintain high quality for that long. But the gang at Frasier, the writers and actors, still manage to make me laugh out loud.
The original episode that ran last night here in the states (I don't know the official title of the episode, but it features Freddy in a national spelling bee) was one of the funniest episodes i have seen this season.
I do give them credit, after all of these years they still manage to surprise and amuse.
dugferd 03-19-2002, 12:20 AM And it'll be around for three more years. :)
(Didn't they sign a deal recently?)
ClassicComedyFan2 03-19-2002, 12:24 AM Yes, Frasier has been renewed through 2004 at the least.
As for me, let sitcoms live a long time. You may think I'm crazy, but I think long-running shows like Happy Days (10 years), The Jeffersons (10 years), Cheers (11 years) and many others than ran from 6 to 9 years could have lasted several more. But, then again, that might just be me! :)

I absolutely agree. Just because a show has been around a long time does not mean it should be cancelled. Sitcoms should never be given a sentence of just 5 seasons. Yes, there are some shows who stuck around a lot longer than they should have. But I agree with ClassicComedyFan2, in that there are some shows that perhaps should have lasted a little longer. If a show can maintain their overall quality, let them continue. The Simpsons have been around for about 11 seasons or so and they still generate strong ratings and good laughs.
Frasier W. Crane 03-23-2002, 12:05 AM Kelsey Grammer has agreed to do 2 more years, as with Cheers that lasted 11 years. Tough cookies
I don't know...
As much as I do enjoy it when a show has some success and is around a long time, I think sometimes the Networks keep long running shows around just to brag about something.
FOX kept "Married Wth Children" on the air, when the show was way past it's prime, just so they could say that they had the longest running sitcom on the air at the time.
Quantity doesn't mean quality all the time..
treky 03-29-2002, 01:17 AM I'll tell you one thing, if it's gonna be around for 2 more years, they'd better improve the writing or something from what the show's been like this season. Don't get me wrong, I like the show, it's just that this season hasn't been their best work. But, they still had a couple good episodes. I think part of the problem is, it's not the same between Niles & Daphnie anymore. Maybe they should have some new character, as a "foil" for Fraiser.
Brian Damage 03-29-2002, 04:25 PM Maybe one of the reasons that Frasier hasn't been as crisp this season is due to the tragic death of its producer David Angell. He was definitely a driving force for both Frasier AND Cheers!
treky 03-30-2002, 02:39 AM that's right, I hadn't thought of that!
mamamiasweetpeaches 03-30-2002, 12:29 PM I agree....it was a really good show but I think its run its course.I think about the time they lost me was when Daphne and Niles hooked up.Not totally believable.I watch it every once and awhile, I caught the Spelling Bee ep which I thought was pretty lame. They're running out of ideas. HOWEVER...I will say this:I like the ones Jean Smart is in.The chemistry between her and Frasier is good.Love/Hate/Fear....maybe they should show them more than the cooing twosome of Niles and Daphne.Happy couple doesnt equal funny!!!!
treky 03-30-2002, 03:32 PM I aggree, but I don't think the show has "run its course". They should limit the scenes with Niles & Daphnie to, say, one scene every couple of weeks, & maybe make Jean Smarts character a regular.
Brian Damage 04-01-2002, 07:40 PM Or what about a Jean Smart spinoff?!?
treky 04-02-2002, 02:24 AM yea, that would be good, too!:) :) :) :)

I also agree, I think it has lost some of its magic, but I do think it deserves to run the full 11 season plan to match Cheers. This show is great, and may not be as funny as it used to be, but it still is funny a unqiue. The show needs to go some different angles, or go back to some of the orginals, like more about his radio shows, and radio scenes. I think, I repeat i think, that lately the episodes have not always started with Frasier on his show, and it used to, and thats where each ep got started. I think they should go back to that more. I also think a reason for it not be as funny is David Angell. Since he has been gone, the eps dont have that Frasier-David Angell spunk. And another reason I think it doesnt seem as funny is the acting. The writers have Frasier being angry and yelling to much now. And that gets old, lets just see those moments where things just arent going right and they need to calmly fix them. I miss those days.
As for a Jean Smart spin-off, i dont know. I read back in September that a new female was going to be added to the show in Novemember of 2001, i was figuring whoever he picked to be with in the season opener. But that didnt happen, by the way I was routing for Jean and I wished she would have stayed on the show. And I thought that if they added a new cast member that would add new story lines, and I think thats what they should do. I think they should finally have Frasier meet someone, someone steadly to be with. My thoughts are, they date in the 10th season, next year, and get married in the middle of the 11th, and then do half a season as he is married, and then wrap this terrific show up. I want to see this show stay ontop, but if it slipps, oh well, I will always be watching, and I am happy no matter what. Good Luck Frasier
SoFl123 05-11-2002, 12:36 PM I think they should do the Walker Texas Ranger thing and let the show die a winner. alot of producers wait for their show to get old and not as appealing to audiences so they let the show go with the candle out. I think maybe a season more and it will be ready to go a winner.
Tiger32 05-15-2002, 11:16 PM I still love this show, it was very very funny last night, as the nature of Fraiser and Roz' relationship changed. The writing is still very good, that is why it has lasted so long. This show will go down as one of the best sitcoms in television history, when all is said in done.
20 years from now, a new generation will be watching this show in syndication on TV Land, Nick at Nite or one of the other stations that shows classic sitcoms. Most great series last 5 or 6 years, but this series will have the distinction of being on the air for 11 years. That is very significant in this day and time.
Will and Grace Fanatic 05-16-2002, 12:17 PM I don't think it should be cancelled come on it is still in the top 20. If it ever became a top 40 show then I would say yes. But when the ratings are still good I don't think so. The episode I saw on Tuesdays about him and Roz getting together was pretty good. But when the 11 years do come up then I think it should end.
