I always try my best to avoid conflict in my life, but I'm the type that would step in if I see or hear something that I find fishy or don't like what's going on.
About a week ago I was on the NYC subway and the train car was fairly empty. Across from me was a Hispanic lady and her 2 small kids. Later on this black teenager came on the train w/ a big box of candy he was selling. He went up to the lady and she was like "No, no" but her children were wanting it.
He then stepped over to the children and placed the candy in their hands and the lady looked very nervous and still going "No!" I could tell she didn't speak much English, so I got up and said from my seat "The lady said no." He said to me "Alright, chill brother. It's cool."
I walked up, grabbed the candy from the kids and put it back in the box and said again "The lady said no." He's still like "Alright, alright, I'm leaving..." When I went back to my seat the lady is saying to me "Gracias, gracias" and I nodded back.
He eventually went to the other side of the car and I see him eyeballing me. He got off a couple of stops later and that was it.
Another thing happened at the local supermarket a couple of years ago. There was this customer talking w/ random people on the line saying ridiculous things like "There is no such thing as autism. Back in my day we didn't have such things."
I told him he's an ignorant moron and we got into an argument. Then more and more customers heard what was going on and pretty much told off this dude.
My father tends to put himself into other people's business. About 10 years ago we were riding the city bus and these two men in front of us were talking about how corrupt some construction project was that was going on. Something to do w/ the flooding zones or something like that.
Well my father, being an NYC civil engineer at the time (now retired), decided to jump right in shouting off building codes and laws at them telling them how stupid they were.
When they asked "what makes you an authority?" he pulled out his business card shouting off his college degrees and business position. At that point they had that look as if they "lost a fight" and had to agree w/ him.
I felt embarrassed at the time telling him later on that he shouldn't have bothered and he said something along the lines of "I can't stand ignorant ******."
So I was just curious to see if others here had gotten into anything like this w/ people in public? Do you tend to step in?
