View Full Version : Mary's take home monthly pay was $680.00 in 1974?
TVFactFan 09-07-2014, 01:27 PM Wow, that was truly 40 years ago. Plus it's reveals that her rent was $145 a month
$680.00 a month after taxes is considered poverty in 2014:lol:
This episode was "Phyllis Whips Inflation"

Things are just too damn much money today. $1800 could buy you a Honda Civic in 1974. Cadillacs were only $10 grand.

my went up to $945 and it was time to go
Bonniegirl 09-09-2014, 10:56 PM What would $680 a month's pay be equivalent to today? And $145 rent. She did have a studio. I wonder if that was considered a good price than for a studio apt. or pricey?

$3011.00. Pretty good for a single person

Wow!!! So a minimum wage person would be really bringing in peanuts if $680 was equivalent to all that money! I started working in 1979 part time and minimum wage was around 2 something if I remember correctly?

I don't think Mary was struggling though at the time. She kind of reminded me of myself
Single, Live alone, no kids, no car and had enough money to pay rent, buy food, pay bills, and save

Mary had a car though....she drove a Ford Mustang in the opening.

She doesn't SEEM like a car driver. I can't explain why I think that.

Wow, I wouldn't want to drive in a Minnesota snowstorm! But than I wouldn't want to walk, or stand at a bus stop for public transportation there either in the winter!!!! FREEZING!!!!
snowpeck 09-10-2014, 09:53 PM With inflation factored in, Mary was making a good bit more then than I am now in the same industry (TV news)!
caladon 09-10-2014, 10:03 PM Here's a fun website for calculating inflation:

$2.90 I think it was. That was the year I got my first part-time job.
I just looked up 1974 and the federal minimum wage that year was $2.00. Adjusted for inflation, that would be $9.65 today. But the actual current federal minimum is just $7.25, so it hasn't kept up with inflation. So accounting for inflation, a minimum wage worker in 1974 made 33% more than a minimum wage worker does today in 2014.

And had less expenses
No cable
No Internet

Which is a pretty sad state of affairs: fewer expenses then, yet a bigger paycheck. And it's not just cable and Internet. Healthcare costs and college expenses, relative to salary, were way cheaper back in those days. People could get by on minimum wage back then, but not now.

Yup a large fry at Mcdonald's was not $2.50 like it is today. In 1974 it was 10 cents lol
Coffeecup 10-19-2014, 01:08 PM I had a job in the summer of 1976 and I made $2.10 an hr (state wage), but the federal wage was $2.35. I questioned my boss and he said he wasn't required to pay Fed wage so I was stuck with 25 cent less. For the last several years our State wage $8.00 has been higher than the Fed wage. I believe the Fed is $7.25
As for Mary, I wonder what the second apartments rent was.

That's why so many people move to Philly from NYC
Bonniegirl 10-20-2014, 05:38 PM In Southern California alot of the young people that are from out here stay living at their parents house, well into their 20's even 30's! The ones who come from other states have to end of living with lots of room mates. So much different from when I came in in 1985 . A person that made minimum wage could rent a small studio apt. and if you made a little bit above minimum you could get a decent one bedroom. And apartments came furnished too than. Not the best furniture but just starting out it saved money on buying it.

I live in a studio now after living in a one bedroom for 13 years. And I realized I don't like sofabeds, I want to get an actual bed by end of this year
Prince Michael 10-31-2014, 08:20 PM Oh she moved? Was that because she got a promotion and was making more money?
I remember the episode where Mary moved . At first, she lived at 119 North Weatherly Avenue, in the same building with Rhoda Morganstern and Phyllis Lindstrom . In one episode, she was feeling bored with her life and she wasn't her usual sweet, cheerful self . She found an available apartment in an apartment building, and decided to shake up her life and move for a change of pace .
The first building she lived in is located at 2104 Kenwood Parkway in Minneapolis, Minnesota . I read where the folks who made The Mary Tyler Moore Show filmed that house to represent 119 North Weatherly Avenue . They had to get the permission of the building's owner . The building's owner disapproved of situation comedies, but he thought they were filming his house for a documentary of great houses in Minneapolis . When he found out that they filmed his house for an establishing shot in a situation comedy, and he refused permission when they wanted new establishing shots, so the writers wrote an episode where Mary moved .

Actually, when the owner of that house withdrew permission for filming exterior shots there, they found a different, but similar house, and began doing shots there to represent the same apartment building. This was a year before Mary moved to her new apartment. This is all discussed in the following thread. Scroll down and you can see pictures of both houses used to represent 119 North Weatherly Avenue. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=233968

A good option for you would be a daybed with a trundle ! A regular comfortable single bed, and if you have a girl sleep over you can pull out the trundle. Saves room from a regular double/queen sized bed, and less of a pain in the butt of a sofa bed having to close it up every morning and pull it out before you go to sleep! And you can make it really cool for daytime. Get big sofa type pillows to put around the back so it will be a nice, attractive inviting place to sit by day! ;)

That's cool, you have a big studio apartment! Getting the love seat is cool. A place to sit when you are alone and before you get the lady to the bed!! All kidding aside it's cool cause you really need a place besides a bed to sit on in the day! ;) And again, wow you have a good size place that can fit a bed and a loveseat!! Nice!! ;)
