View Full Version : Are Young People Watching Less TV? Yep they sure are. Patty Duke 08-24-2014, 02:07 PM http://www.marketingcharts.com/television/are-young-people-watching-less-tv-24817/ :clap Mr. Television 08-24-2014, 02:11 PM Good. I could care less because I'm almost outside the demographic and the networks don't care about me anyway. lol They didn't even represent me when I was in the demographic. If the networks want to spend their time trying to get a demographic that could care less about them good luck. lol Mr. Television 08-24-2014, 02:18 PM You can even tell that's the case because of the ratings. The ratings that are acceptable now wouldn't have been 5 years ago. retrofan05 08-24-2014, 06:36 PM The networks would be better off targeting an older demographic, when the younger generation (such as myself) spends the majority of their time online watching YouTube or Netflix. Frenky 08-24-2014, 07:35 PM I'm watching less TV because of bad quality, not because today there are many options like Netflix, Hulu etc., nowadays I usually watch reruns of older shows. Impressions 08-24-2014, 08:51 PM Probably watching shows on Hulu, DVD, iTunes or Netflix now. Cable TV, imo, is dead after all the networks started producing reality shows. Patty Duke 08-24-2014, 10:04 PM Probably watching shows on Hulu, DVD, iTunes or Netflix now. Cable TV, imo, is dead after all the networks started producing reality shows. We don't watch the trash on anymore, it's mostly reality now anyway. Mace Dolex 08-24-2014, 10:55 PM I'm watching less TV because of bad quality, not because today there are many options like Netflix, Hulu etc., nowadays I usually watch reruns of older shows. Yep I'm with you there, I'm mostly watching classic reruns of GOOD television and/or watching movies on Bluray. And I also don't do none of that binge watching crap, I'm not a Netflix type of person I don't care what shows are popular are out there right now. And its funny because when I was younger my parents were saying I was watching too much television, wouldn't they be surprised now. tiredmike59 08-24-2014, 11:21 PM Probably watching shows on Hulu, DVD, iTunes or Netflix now. Cable TV, imo, is dead after all the networks started producing reality shows. Do you ever get that strange feeling that you're being watched? Cable doesn't. EmoJoe 08-24-2014, 11:45 PM They're watching the same amount of TV but watching it in different ways, many of which are "untraceable" by Nielson standards (mostly streaming/on demand). The networks would be better off targeting an older demographic, when the younger generation (such as myself) spends the majority of their time online watching YouTube or Netflix. It's not like the older generation is immune to the new technology. Plenty of older people use streaming services too. The times are changing, eventually the networks are just going to have to accept it and figure out what to do next. biffbronson 08-25-2014, 01:27 AM The Nielsen method of collecting data, where you fill out booklets by hand, needs to be updated to something less cumbersome. They should be able to send you an online link for your area's programming and have you check off your viewing -- or at least have the many area channels filled in and ready. The last time they sent me booklets, I told them when they said they were coming to please WAIT -- because I was in an unusually busy period. But they sent 'em anyway, and I was unable to fill them out fully and still get them mailed in time. It's time consuming when you're a channel-surfer like me...! comedyfreak 08-25-2014, 03:02 AM Good. I could care less because I'm almost outside the demographic and the networks don't care about me anyway. lol They didn't even represent me when I was in the demographic. If the networks want to spend their time trying to get a demographic that could care less about them good luck. lol Same here LOL I'm no longer in the 18-49 category since I'm 51 now. noveel 08-25-2014, 04:52 AM The networks would be better off targeting an older demographic, when the younger generation (such as myself) spends the majority of their time online watching YouTube or Netflix. advertisers aren't interested an older demographic since they're easier (and cheaper) to reach LUNCH 08-25-2014, 09:30 AM I'm watching less TV because of bad quality, not because today there are many options like Netflix, Hulu etc., nowadays I usually watch reruns of older shows. I gave up on most modern TV quite some time ago,and similair to what you mentioned it has nothing to do with things like Netflix,Hulu etc.I never use them either. Regulus 08-27-2014, 10:11 AM With over 40,000 Episodes, Movies, Serials and Documentaries I've acquired during the last 7 1/2 years won't be watching "Appointment TV" for a VERY LONG TIME! UMFaninMD 08-27-2014, 09:13 PM Many younger viewers also have jobs where they must work weekends and nights and aren't home to watch it "live" on TV so they catch what they want by streaming it online. It's like my era of recording shows on a VCR and watching it later. I'm sure the lack of decent programming also has something to do with it. Some networks think young people will watch just anything they throw on the screen and that's probably not the case. Coffeecup 08-31-2014, 11:18 AM advertisers aren't interested an older demographic since they're easier (and cheaper) to reach I tend to think the advertisers do a fine job at aiming at the older crowd. I watch Cozi, METV and TVland and a few other stations and all I see are ads for walk in bathtubs, Life Alerts gadgets, medications, hurry canes, and very few ads are for the under 40 crowd. I have seen the woman tumble down the stairs and cry out for help so many times, I have to leave the room. If I was a youngster, I wouldn't watch tv for I would think,Do I have to look forward to getting old and needing these gadgets.? noveel 08-31-2014, 11:14 PM I tend to think the advertisers do a fine job at aiming at the older crowd. If I was a youngster, I wouldn't watch tv for I would think,Do I have to look forward to getting old and needing these gadgets.? old reruns usually mean old(er) viewers, and cheaper ad time, why would a maker of walk in bathtubs pay more for commercials on a network when they can reach their potential buyers with cheaper ad time on a channel with old(er) shows, many demos are undersampled like college students, you see a lot of college students on the Price is Right yet the commercials seem to aimed at the AARP crowd, the money demographic (25-54) is at work during the daytime noveel 09-01-2014, 01:15 AM Many younger viewers also have jobs where they must work weekends and nights and aren't home to watch it "live" on TV so they catch what they want by streaming it online. Some networks think young people will watch just anything they throw on the screen and that's probably not the case. appointment tv for non sports programming is dead, at least at the network appointed times, viewers schedule the appoints now, if networks put on shows aimed the older crowd that's my likely to watch live network TV, they'd get lower ad rates, to increase their profits they've put on cheap reality programming that doesn't need a lot of viewers to be profitable, the quality programs are moving to subscription services, no will pay a TV tax for quality programming like they do in some countries (THAT'S SOCIALISM:happyface), we give it to a cable company or netflix instead noveel 09-01-2014, 01:27 AM I tend to think the advertisers do a fine job at aiming at the older crowd. Every network has a specific niche/audience they target. Primetime TV is the 18-49 demographic but daytime and cable TV differ. waichingliu81 09-16-2014, 11:27 PM I gave up on most modern TV quite some time ago,and similair to what you mentioned it has nothing to do with things like Netflix,Hulu etc.I never use them either. i'm 33 but haven't watched current tv in a long while. i rely on youtube and daily motion for classic sitcom episodes. |
