View Full Version : Wondering if Chico and the Man is the only 70's sitcom that is.....
TVFactFan 08-22-2014, 10:56 PM 1. with no full episodes on youtube
2. no complete seasons on DVD
3. Not on Cable
4. Not on Digital TV
This show looks to be lost forever
tlc38tlc38 08-22-2014, 11:21 PM I'm still hoping that Shout! will rescue it and release a complete series set.
As of now, all we have is the 6 episode "best of" set that WB released a few years ago.

Was the Sammy Davis episode included?
James28 08-23-2014, 12:38 AM Chico and the Man extinct from reruns or YouTube forever? I would think this is because of star Freddie Prinze's suicide having such a huge impact on the show (since he played a title character), and viewers are not willing to watch any of the post-Prinze-suicide episodes. Just my opinion.

Or it could be since it was rarely in syndication not a lot of people had a chance to record episodes
littletydramon 08-25-2014, 12:12 AM My parents have episodes taped off tvland Im hopeing to watch again. I remember the series being pretty funny.
TVFactFan 08-25-2014, 02:33 AM There are issues keeping it off DVD and possibly syndication.
Like what?
comedyfreak 08-25-2014, 02:56 AM I've always heard that when a person dies in the manner he did, they won't put the show in syndication or release it on dvd. I'm not sure of the reasoning behind it, this would also be the case for Alias Smith and Jones. Peter Duel committed suicide during filming and you don't see that show anymore either.

Chico and the Man (1974) : Why is this show not in syndication? (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070975/board/flat/15429022?p=1)
Chico and the Man (1974) : The dreaded 4th Season (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070975/board/flat/7751737?p=1)

But it did receive a 6-episode release from WB a few years back.
icecream 08-25-2014, 02:42 PM I don't think suicide would automatically keep a show from being released. No one's going to stop watching Robin Williams just because he committed suicide.

I think the difference is that you couldn't see Robin Williams' physical deterioration on screen like you apparently did w/ Freddie Prinze (because of his drug abuse) towards the end of his run on Chico....
boechsner 08-26-2014, 02:21 AM I doubt it. Chico and the Man aired regularly in syndication through the 1980s. It aired on TV Land in the early 2000's, not for long, but for about a year. I think we are just dealing with a show that hasn't done well in syndication.
Also, remember, Warner Bros. just started to open it's vaults to these digital sub-channels. I think it's only a matter of time before we see it.

Skywalker 08-26-2014, 02:59 PM I asked Warner Archive on FB a few years ago about Chico and the Man and the told me there were music rights so I'd be surprised if this show ever makes it to DVD. Maybe Shout could release it, that might be the only way. I even mentioned a few years ago on here how it's the only long running sitcom from the 1970's that hasn't been released on DVD yet. Kinda surprised there aren't any full episodes on YT or some other site.
april4972 08-26-2014, 04:47 PM There is a 20 disc complete set out there in the trading circle!

So it's only available for viewing in the trading community. wow
april4972 08-26-2014, 07:37 PM Sorry, I didn't finish my thought. I meant to say I'm surprised someone hasn't posted it somewhere to watch since it's out there (you mentioned it not being on You Tube).

Especially since it;s complete on DVD
comedyfreak 08-28-2014, 04:43 AM I bet you could find the complete series on iOffer.com
biffbronson 08-29-2014, 07:45 PM I used to watch the first-run episodes so many years ago. I liked how Jack Albertson's character kept shot glasses in his cash register tray for his drinking, and he would fill 'em up right in there.

Both those links just go to the IMDB home page now.
jehobden 09-03-2022, 03:45 PM TV Land reran it starting in January 2001, kicking it off w/ a weekend marathon, where all 88 episodes were run at least once, and some twice to fill all 48 hours of the weekend. I don't think I'd seen the show for at least 20 years when TV Land had it. Unfortunately I only remember it lasting a few months there. I do have the 6-episode WB sampler of the series, and I recently saw S4/E1, that introduced Raul as the new "Chico".
