View Full Version : What are some of your favorite TV show openings?
LUNCH 08-06-2014, 01:14 PM By openings,I mean when they roll the beginning credits on a show and start playing the theme music or song of the program.--There are a lot of good ones, but two of my favorites are The Original(1968-80) Hawaii 5-0. It's just brilliant, from the photography,to the music and everything else in between. The second is CHiPs,great theme music and everything else about it. --What are some of your favorites?

I have quite a few. One of them is Trapper John, M.D., the 1979-86 CBS Sunday medical series starring Pernell Roberts (especially the one of its first six seasons). I liked not only the opening title track, but the entire structure of the opening (the color-changing hospital, the X-ray cast cards, everything).
Another is Hart to Hart, the 1979-84 ABC detective/adventure series starring Robert Wagner, Stefanie Powers and Lionel Stander. I liked how Lionel (in V/O as Max) opened the show by describing some things about Jonathan and Jennifer, and then had that classic line, "...'cause when they met, it was murder!" ("'cause their hobby is murder!" in #1 [1979-80]). I also liked how the title was brought up by having a red heart zoom in from between the two cars. And of course, the title track is one of my favorites here too.
comedyfreak 08-07-2014, 05:58 AM Liked the opening of Sanford And Son, The Flying Nun, That Girl, Bewitched, The Munsters both seasons, Charlie's Angels, Bosom Buddies, Soap, The Jeffersons.
mets82 08-07-2014, 02:34 PM I like the Happy Days theme and Welcome Back Kotter.
torcan 08-18-2014, 02:00 PM I'd have to go with "Bewitched", including the different variations that were seen on the network run that aren't seen in syndication today.

HugeBensonFan 08-31-2014, 05:41 AM BENSON, Hill Street Blues, Welcome Back Kotter, WKRP in Cincinnati, Newhart, Golden Girls, What's Happening, Gimme a Break (2nd version), St. Elsewhere, Diff'rent Strokes (both versions), Sanford & Son, Mr. Belvedere, Highway to Heaven, Mork & Mindy, Hogan Family, Perfect Strangers, Alice, Family Ties, Dallas, Cheers (even though I wasn't crazy about the show), Laverne & Shirley, and Happy Days.
Frenky 08-31-2014, 06:28 AM Dynasty, Cheers, Star Trek: TNG, The X-Files, Twin Peaks.
tlc38tlc38 08-31-2014, 09:23 AM I'd like to add Newhart to my previous list above. I always liked that opening sequence.
And, Laverne & Shirley's opening is just pure classic gold.
bmasters9 08-31-2014, 11:56 AM I'm adding Barney Miller to mine too. That opening and title track have been big factors in why I have enjoyed it as much as I have from Shout!'s release of the same.

Schmoopie 03-12-2016, 02:28 AM I love Frasier and how every episode shows something different in the silhouetted Seattle skyline. Sometimes you have to really be paying attention to see it b/c I know that even I've missed a few of them.

Portlandia, which is just going through Portland and shows some people.
8qzsEzRPgO4
Scrubs, which is just going through every character just walking, but cool that it all goes together.
fbG2oCIQNdc
Parks and Recreation, which shows the character along with just people in parks, and some murals in the city hall.

LUNCH 03-11-2024, 02:50 PM I can't believe I did not originally mention The Mary Tyler Moore openings and both versions of the song. If I had to pick the best opening of all it would be The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Outstanding in every way.
ThisLittlePiggy 03-11-2024, 06:17 PM It's great. I love the lyrics and I love when Mary throws up her hat. :)
stevea 03-11-2024, 11:05 PM I've probably mentioned this somewhere else on this board. "Newhart" might have overstayed its welcome by a few seasons, but it really had a great opening and theme.
Charles Knox 03-11-2024, 11:44 PM Jonny Quest
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show

Just to name a few.

Magnum PI (1980s)
The Rousters
dee2364 07-16-2024, 01:09 PM That Girl--even though it was just a cheap TV show, the music and opening sequences always felt to me like a big budget 1960s musical. It also captured that perfect time in the 1960s when mod and the Youthquake were at its peak.
Taxi--love the laid back, groovy music and how simple the opening is. No corny freeze frames or anything to date the show.
Married with Children--I didn't realize how much I really liked this until I started watching a terrible syndicated version without Love and Marriage.
Night Court/Barney Miller--love the music, composed by the same guy.
Drew Carey Show--loved all the different versions (Moon Over Parma, Cleveland Rocks, Five O'Clock World)
