Who's going to buy this one?

JackJanetChrissy 08-02-2014, 06:26 PM I don't think I will be buying. I own each season individually, and it looks like most of the special features in the complete series package are already on the DVDs I have, except for the Don Knotts memorial. There's not much incentive to lay out so much money for stuff that's already available.
Of course, if someone on here buys it and proves me wrong I will reconsider. But I will wait until then.

I'll ditto this.
I pre-ordered this one. It will be nice to have more to contribute in this forum after I watch the shows.
JackJanetChrissy 08-08-2014, 10:54 PM JSP, don't you have the DVDs? Or did you watch the reruns on TV?

I watched the reruns back on TV Land in the early 00s.....
Therefore so far I'm running on memories mostly from over 10 years ago.
I saw a couple of episodes on TV Land recently.
Of course I grew up watching the syndicated reruns in the 80s as a kid.
When I was five I had no idea Jack was pretending to be gay! I wasn't aware of that facet of the show until the late 90s!
I don't have any of the DVDs. Really looking forward to this one!
JackJanetChrissy 08-09-2014, 12:05 AM It will be awesome! There are some cool special features, like the two unaired pilots. Those are my favorite sf.

Same here, I also have each season already and don't need the complete series.
So in about three days I should be getting every episode. Right now I'm really bored waiting in anticipation.
Well I finally got the complete series in the mail today. So far all I've watched were the two pilots, the first without Dewitt or Somers and the second without Somers. I liked the first one written by Larry Gelbart more than the second one by Nicholl Ross West. I thought the jokes were a little more clever.
JackJanetChrissy 08-19-2014, 10:45 PM I agree with you, JSP. The second unaired pilot fell kind of flat for me. I guess I am so used to seeing Chrissy that to see someone else try to play that character is weird and just....not-right seeming, lol.

The opening for the second unaired pilot was awkward....the way John Ritter was staring into the camera....he wasn't really smiling more like an awkward "get this camera off of me" look. Actually the way the other cast members stared in the intro was weird too. Is this supposed to be a comedy? Can't tell from the looks in their eyes in that second pilot intro.
I can see why they replaced Valerie Curtin in the first pilot with Joyce in the second. Joyce had more spunk and perkiness; just what a comedy show needs. I guess Valerie Curtin has to be related to Jane Curtin somehow, right?
Yep thank goodness Susan Lanier was replaced with Suzanne Somers just in time.
Fred Silverman was right about the casting changes he made to this show.
JackJanetChrissy 08-20-2014, 11:32 AM Yes, Valerie Curtin is a cousin to Jane, I think. She was okay but I thought she was too cynical and negative. Susan Lanier looked a lot like the original Chrissy on MATH, but just didn't fit. I can't see her being a dumb blonde. And I think the reason they cast her was because she was just coming off of her "Hills Have Eyes" fame, lol.
JackJanetChrissy 08-20-2014, 01:04 PM Hi JSP, just wondering what the menus look like on your complete series version....on my individual DVD sets there is a description that goes with each episode. I am curious to see if this is different or updated.
BigManMike 08-20-2014, 02:09 PM I don't own any Three's Company DVDs but I plan to get them all at some point along with the bootleg Ropers and Three's A Crowd. Are the discs in the Complete Series the same as the ones in the individual releases or different?

Yes, they have the descriptions.
I am sure what I got is everything that was on the original releases, save for the bonus of the Don Knotts Tribute which you previously indicated was new.
Just watched the first official episode with Suzanne, which was originally the third pilot I believe.
Nicholl Ross West basically followed Gelbart's template from the first pilot, but somehow actually improved on the script. Their jokes are much improved on this one over the second pilot.
Suzanne makes a lot of difference, but everybody else stepped up their performance too. I guess the third time is the charm (second for Joyce!). Anyway, now it's beginning to look like a good show.
JackJanetChrissy 08-21-2014, 01:05 AM I agree. The second pilot with Lanier was the worst one, I thought. Not just because of her, because everyone was constantly mugging for the camera and the jokes felt forced. I think it was better for everyone that they had three tries (well, John had three and Joyce had two) to perfect the "formula." Suzanne worked because she brought some class and airiness to it, and any true awkwardness or naivete she displayed worked in her favor. Joyce brought the tomboyish charm, and John was, well, John. They really felt like three distinct and real characters who were compelling together.

Yeah Susan Lanier just couldn't be convincing as playing Chrissy as dumb.
Yeah, Suzanne didn't have much experience, but it worked because her character wasn't supposed to either and it didn't seem forced like it did with Lanier.
Conversely, I figure there's no way Larry Gelbart would have enjoyed writing for Chrissy or Janet had he stayed on the show. Valerie Curtin seemed incapable of playing anyone other than the straight voice of reason gal. No way she could do what Joyce did. Totally different style of show...
The first blonde (Zenor) wasn't played as dumb. I don't think Gelbart would have enjoyed writing for women characters he would consider to be dumb or at least naïve.
I'm going to sound crazy for saying this but I think if they had tried to make "Three's Company" more sophisticated and less silly as if it were a Lear or MTM show, it wouldn't have worked. The silliness and what seemed like being over the top and blatantly sexual at the time is what made the show work. If the critics were to have approved of it, it would have been cancelled after the first six-episode midseason ABC tryout....or the thirteen episodes on CBS anyway. NRW managed to make the premise exciting and so much fun for viewers, because let's face it, there was a lot of untapped comedic potential with two girls living with a guy. NRW exploited it better than Gelbart would have IMO.
It was interesting seeing how much the show evolved through these first three tries.
TVQuack 09-29-2014, 11:36 PM Pretty good price right now for the Complete Series on Amazon! :)

At that price anybody who is a fan of the show but doesn't have the DVDs needs to jump on it and get them. People spend more money than that any given weekend. Most people should be able to afford that.
BigManMike 09-30-2014, 12:57 PM I sure do wish I was employed right now because I would definitely get it at that price but I am unemployed right now and I have to watch my spending so I'll have to wait.
