View Full Version : Is there a thread for Flipper???
Bonniegirl 07-20-2014, 10:32 PM I think it was on for more than one season? I thought it was a popular show back in the early 60's? Haven't seen a thread on it. Haven't seen Lassie either?
I been really getting into Flipper lately! They show it on Antenna TV, Saturday and Sundays! :)

I don't think Flipper is considered a sitcom. (even though I think of it as one!)

That is what I was thinking. Maybe not a comedy. More of a drama. But I don't see it listed in the Classic dramas either!
biffbronson 07-22-2014, 03:52 AM Maybe Flipper, Lassie, Gentle Ben, and Daktari should all be together under a category titled Animal Series.

Yeah there really should be an Animal series category ! Animal stars were very big back in those days! :) Another one was Rin Tin Tin. My fav is Flipper though. He is adorable and so smart!!! :)
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
Everyone loves the king of the sea,
Ever so kind and gentle is he,
Tricks he will do when children appear,
And how they laugh when he's near!
They call him Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning,
No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!
comedyfreak 07-31-2014, 06:05 AM I would have thought they would be in Adventure or Dramedy
Bonniegirl 09-07-2014, 08:24 PM Brian Kelly who played the father on Flipper was a very handsome man!!! ;)
Also, I've been watching Lassie! Cozi TV has it on weekdays at 7:30, well like three days a week, for some reason it isn't on sometimes. Lassie is such a sweet dog, a nice heartwarming show! :)
Still haven't found any official threads on here for Flipper or Lassie!

biffbronson 09-16-2014, 09:52 AM Animal lovers will have to be content with the Mister Ed forum here. Wiiiiiilllbuur!
Flipper is an interesting show -- I had never seen it much. I used to see Gentle Ben all the time (Clint Howard, Dennis Weaver).
I think I've seen all of the Lassie episodes with Jeff and Timmy. I have a long way to go, though, with the post-Timmy era. It was nice to see Paul Petersen (The Donna Reed Show) in one of the color episodes. Great that he was able to stay busy. I think he did it before his My Three Sons spot -- his hair wasn't quite as long yet. Also, I saw the episode with Barbara Hale, best known as Della on Perry Mason...!

You should check the Flipper show out! It actually has some good stories to it, and not a comedy per se , but it does have some humorous moments. The youngest son is funny! ;) They show it on Antenna TV Saturday and Sunday at 1:00 PM ( that is PST time) ! ;)
With Lassie, as I posted before, they don't show it every night:confused: I saw two eps with Jeff (loved them) than for some reason a few days later they showed a later color ep. with no Jeff or Timmy! I I'm with you on that. I like the eps with Jeff and Timmy much better than the newer ones! ;)
Jeff looks like a younger Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers, like he could be his little brother! :)

I have never seen Skippy the Bush Kangaroo, but I just googled it, and it sounds cute! :) Wish they would bring it back.

I remember watching that show on Saturday mornings in the late 60's.

Thanks to the magic of cable, I've been able to watch Flipper for the last couple of months. I was a little too young for this show when it was on, so I had never seen it before.
It's a great show! Yes, it's hokey and cheesy, but it's a charming little show. I've been enjoying it.

Yes it is a charming show! Lassie too. That's even older and hokier but very heartwarming! :)

I like Lassie too! The scenery isn't as pretty as the scenery on Flipper, but it's got the same type of vibe as the Flipper show.

I love the scenery on Flipper. How cool would it be to be a kid and have your dad have that job! Live right on the water in Florida and have a friendly dolphin as your pet! I don't think it ever shows those kids going to school. Always in swim trunks being very carefree! :)
Lassie is really old. The eps with Jeff that they are showing now seem really old. Like older than I love Lucy and The Honeymooners. Maybe because it's a drama it seems older? I love the farm (they always show the chickens outside the kitchen door) , the old telephone they have, the grand father and of course Lassie! ;)

The only thing I don't like about Lassie is that depressing theme music. It sounds so sad-it doesn't fit with the show.
I am closer to middle-age than I am to youth, and I agree about those kids on Flipper. I'm kind of jealous of them. I wish my dad had a job like that too. Lucky kids.

I think it was just the music of the time! If a show wasn't a comedy the music was really dramatic!!! I'm thinking they were thinking it was more heartwarming than depressing. Remember the old soap operas? I'm remembering back to the mid 60's and my Mom and Grandma watching the soaps and the music was really dramatic. And Perry Mason is a good example too! So I'm thinking the Lassie theme was supposed to be like a tranquil country setting type music, not meant to be depressing. ;)

That's a good point. I can't stand most country music because it sounds very depressing to me. The same for many ballads. I guess I have really sensitive ears.
Maybe I'd like Lassie more if it wasn't for that terrible music. I just watched Flipper today and found myself enjoying yet another episode. It was a really underrated show in my view.
Finnegan 10-25-2014, 08:46 PM There can't be a thread for Flipper, because he couldn't hold the needle.

Ok I had to think about that for a minute! I was like huh????? Now I got it!!! :D
But I think Flipper could, Lassie too. They could do anything. They were wonder animals!! ;)

Don't ya love the Flipper theme song? After watching it I find myself singing or humming it for a while after! :) :D It's a happy, catchy tune!!;)

I love it too! It's cheesy, but somehow it just perfectly fits with the show.
Bonniegirl 11-01-2014, 04:10 PM They are running the eps now with the alternate theme song. It's basically the same song, but a different singer and a different verse.
There are like 6 eps with this version !
We call him Flipper, Flipper, you’ll see him smilin’
Right from the start, he’ll play it smart.
Beware of Flipper, Flipper, he’s such a lover,
You will discover when he steals your heart!
When you’re feelin’ sad, when you’re feelin’ blue,
He’ll make you glad, yes, that’s what he’ll do,
And what he can do you’ll never believe,
For he’s got tricks up his sleeve!
Beware of Flipper, Flipper, he’s such a lover,
You will discover when he steals your heart!
jarthur31 03-24-2015, 05:42 AM Just an FYI, folks! Season 1 has been out on DVD for a few years now. Recently, Amazon began to sell season 2 on demand on DVD-R but it's worth the price if you loved this show.

Even the oldest episodes of Lassie are not as old as I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. Lassie began in 1954. I Love Lucy began in 1951. The Honeymooners series ran from 1955-56, so technically Lassie is older than that. But the original Hooneymooners skethes that were part of Jackie Gleason's variety series (Cavalcade of Stars and The Jackie Gleason Show), prior to the sitcom series, first appeared in 1951 on Cavalcade of Stars, so they are older than Lassie. Now there was, prior to the TV series, the original Lassie movie (Lassie, Come Home), starring Elizabeth Taylor (which made her a star). That's from 1943.

Yeah that is what I was thinking! That Lassie wasn't really older Than I Love Lucy or the Honeymooners just seemed that way! ;) Farming areas seem more old fashioned than the city, being they are so quaint! And I guess back than if you were on a farm you might still have a very old fashioned telephone , having to go through a town operator. The Ricardo's had an up to date phone for the times and dialed direct. And of course the Cramden's had no phone because Ralph was so cheep !!!
Dianne3 03-28-2015, 04:14 PM Questions here.
I have never seen the Flipper TV series, but have seen the two Flipper movies on TCM.
In the original movie, Chuck Connors of the Rifleman played the father, and their was a mother.
By the 2nd movie, which was shown not long before the TV Series premiered, there was a different father and no mother.
Anyone know why? I assume Chuck Connors wasn't interested in the series and the producers felt a mother wasn't needed.
Also, in the 2nd movie, there was only one son.
In the series the new father's (don't know actor's name) real life son played the youngest son. I'm assuming a younger son was added, since by this time Luke Halpin was already 17.
jarthur31 03-28-2015, 08:09 PM Yes, Tommy Norden was added to the cast. He was about 11 or 12 when the first season was aired.

Growing up with 5 other siblings we loved to watch this show on re-runs after school along with Mr. Ed and Lassie.
Torgo 03-29-2015, 08:09 PM Another show that could be added into the Animal Series category is the Canadian series The Littlest Hobo. It was about a German Shepherd that traveled around the country helping people in need. There were 2 series, one ran from 1963 to 1965, and the other ran from 1979 to 1985. They were based on the 1958 movie of the same name.

Bad News! After watching the intro I just HAVE to purchase this series (it's available on **ff*r)!
The Good News! It will be the series that will pass the 40,000 episodes mark!
To be ordered at 12:01 AM on the Birthday of the Woman's International Little (Stinker) of the (20th) Century (That's April 2 for those of you in Rio Linda! ). :D

On the cover of a People magazine 6 months or so ago, I saw the husband of one of the Duggar daughters and the husband resemble Tommy Rettig. It is amazing how people of the present look like people of the past. I always felt the show had good taste with the swimsuit/shorts look.
