Jerry's Dad, Norm Mathers was a school priniciple and later Superintendent. It sure sounds like there was no "crap." in the Mathers' house. Mr Mathers states the following:


"When Jerry violates the rules, he is spanked."

"If Jerry was ever unhappy doing the series, his Dad had the right to get him out of the contract. This also applied if there was a strain on the family."

Tony and he got three hours of studio schooling a day from a studio tutor and also worked under his Mother's supervision on set."

"Jerry was quizzed by his Dad regularly to keep up with his studio school work. His Dad felt that he probably learned more in a studio school setting than a regular classroom."

"His father and Mother Marylin were very happy of the positive influence that the series had on TV, and on Jerry."


Reading this, it sounds like Jerry's Dad was strict. I don't think he would gotten away with some of the things at home that he did on the show!

Jerry said his father was "Strict, but understanding." He said once that he thought his Dad was very similar to Hugh, personality-wise:

Parents were a lot stricter on their kids back then. None of this "count to 3" jive I hear parents use today.
