They did film live at least in Season 6 because I went to a taping. It was in the same studio with Facts of Life :)

Yeah many sitcoms filmed in front of an audience but then the sound engineer would "sweeten" the laugh track for broadcast airing in case certain jokes didn't get a reaction.
