The spinoff is exactly like every other current Disney Channel sitcom.

Schmoopie 05-24-2014, 06:33 AM I've been seeing the previews like crazy on the Disney Channel and I'm not impressed at all. But then again I never liked "Boy Meets World" much at all either. Only watched it b/c nothing else was on. But yeah, the new shows on Disney haven't been very good at all. The last good one that they premiered was "Dog With A Blog" and even that took me a while to get into.
80sTrivia 05-24-2014, 09:29 AM Figures the Disney Channel would find a way to mess it up! ;)
tlc38tlc38 05-24-2014, 10:27 AM I didn't have high hopes for GMW so this review doesn't come as a shock. However, being such a big BMW fan, I will give it a shot just to catch up with the "old gang". I really don't care about the new characters.
Adamantium 05-24-2014, 11:56 AM I watched the pilot already and I like it. It wasn't flawless, of course, but overall I enjoyed it. One thing that bugs me is Farkle - both the character and how his name is constantly being said in the episode. I'm hoping he's phased out much like Minkus was on BMW.
Most Disney shows suck (the only two I kinda like are "Good Luck, Charlie" and "Austin & Ally"). Of course it doesn't matter how I feel about that because none of those shows are aimed at me, lol. I'm a 32 year old single guy with no kids.
Even though it wasn't a perfect pilot, I still feel this can be a good show. There are plenty of shows I love but didn't care for the premiere episode ("Wings" is an example). Even if I end up disliking this show, I'll always be glad that it happened. I like seeing what happens to two of my beloved BMW characters after they made the move to New York in the finale.
spunkygirl 05-24-2014, 01:21 PM Here we go again
The show will be fine, if people go in expecting it to be a continuation of BMW then that's on them, cause it's not.
I'm not going to a review seriously, I'll watch for myself then judge.
FuriosityShell 05-24-2014, 03:27 PM I've watched the pilot episode too and it was pretty good. It wasn't perfect and there were things abut it that I didn't like but it was pretty heartwarming and funny. Cory stills acts the same way he did on BMW and the ending is very sweet. It's way better than the shows on Disney nowadays. While it feels like Boy Meets World, it does have a bit of a Disney-feel though, particularly Farkle, who was a character straight out of another Disney show. All of the other new characters (except for maybe Lucas, the love interest, who wasn't bad just kind of boring) were pretty funny and well-presented though, but Farkle was a character you'd expect from any old Disney shows. He didn't seem a lot like Minkus besides his eagerness to learn. He seemed more like a half-hearted attempt to be similar to how Eric was in the later seasons of BMW.
Schmoopie 05-25-2014, 06:37 AM I like most of the older shows on the Disney Channel, like Jessie, Good Luck Charlie, Dog With a Blog, Shake It Up, Austin and Ally. But the newer ones are just a joke as far as I'm concerned.
Spark Of Spirit 05-26-2014, 01:15 PM If you want to be fair to it, you have to compare it to season 1 of BMW. If you do that, it doesn't really do anything wrong or out of place.
If you were expecting this to have the same content as season 7 out of the gate, then you would be mistaken in your expectations. Seventh graders and college students don't exactly have the same lives. BMW was not the same show in the first season as it was by the end, so I don't know what some people are expecting here.
Still, leave it to the internet to always jump to the worst possible conclusion as quickly as possible.

It's on iTunes.

“The series Disney Channel made isn’t” for “Boy Meets World” fans, says Kevin Fallon. "Instead, and logically, it’s for the Disney Channel audience, a group as young as we were when we first watched 'Boy Meets World' and who may not even have any idea what 'Boy Meets World' is. 'Girl Meets World' is simply a tween show with tween humor and loose ties to a series that grown ups used to love.” PLUS: “Boy Meets World” fans will get just a few inside jokes and flashbacks (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/06/26/girl-meets-world-review-sorry-teens-of-the-90s-this-spin-off-is-not-for-you/), it’s like any other Disney Channel show (http://variety.com/2014/tv/reviews/tv-review-girl-meets-world-1201251523/), and Ben Savage agrees you can’t build a show on nostalgia (http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ben-savage-girl-meets-world-proves-you-can-go-home-again-20140627).

TVFactFan 06-28-2014, 09:10 PM Looks like Ben Savage had hair transplant surgery LOL
Topanga still looks YUMMY
But why would the Cory character be teaching in a classroom with his daughter as one of his students? LOL

It happens sometimes. I went to school with some kids that had one of their parents as a teacher. My sister was my 8th grade math teacher!

Well I guess as long as it's kept quiet LOL
faraj 07-03-2014, 04:38 PM Kind of like the New Leave It To Beaver when that show was focused on Kip, Oliver, Freddie, Kelly, and later Kevin.
FuriosityShell 07-08-2014, 08:21 PM I just saw the third episode of Girl Meets World. It's up on YouTube in a small screen. It's called Girl Meets Sneak Attack. A lot of people think it's the second episode, but whoever's uploaded it made a mistake and uploaded the third episode. The second episode can only be seen (as of right now) when it premieres on Friday. Anyway, this episode is a lot better than the first.
In this episode, Riley tries to compete with another girl over Lucas. Meanwhile, at home, Topanga tries to deal with little Auggie, who starts acting like an adult to impress his "girlfriend" Ava, an older woman (she's 6 and he's 5).
To be honest, the episode doesn't have much of a plot but it's very funny and it's an improvement from the first episode (which wasn't bad, but kind of awkward).
Pros:
1. The character of Farkle is toned down considerably (thank goodness). After watching the first episode, I couldn't stand the character because he was so over the top and annoying. But after watching this episode, I can honestly say that he was one of the best things about the episode. He's very sweet and endearing and reminiscent of Minkus in this one (unlike in the first episode where he was just an overexaggerated version of Minkus). He's definitely a strong character in my book.
2. Topanga got a lot more screen time in this episode and had a subplot with Auggie (mentioned above). She's basically a grown-up version of the Topanga we knew from the later years of BMW and it's very clear that she's the boss in the household.
3. Auggie is adorable! He reminds me a lot of the first Morgan and the chemistry between him and Topanga is just like the chemistry between (1st) Morgan and Amy.
4. Maya is freaking awesome! While she is the Shawn Hunter of the show, she's very much different from him. While Shawn was more a laid-back type of person, she's more of a take charge type of person. Shawn was snarky but always a bit dim (especially in the middle seasons), but Maya is extremely sarcastic and intelligent. The only things they have in common is that they are both cool and confident and they both have a rough home life (though from what I hear, Maya's home life, while not good, isn't nearly as bad as Shawn's, at least not yet). You'll hear more about Maya's background later on in the season, not in this episode.
5. It's funny! I laughed as much in this episode as I would in a late first season/second season episode of Boy Meets World. Riley, Maya and Farkle delivered most of the laughs, especially Riley (who is just as awkward as Cory). Riley handled most of the physical humor while Maya had lots of funny one-liners and Farkle was a mix between the two.
6. The references to Boy Meets World were a lot more subtle. Well, there weren't really any references to BMW in this episode, but there was no more of that cheesy "world" stuff like in the first episode. However, there is one reference that may or may not be intentional. Cory was teaching the class about Pearl Harbor and he and Farkle kept saying it was "the day that will live in infamy," similar to how Shawn and Feeny kept saying it in the "No Guts, No Cory" episode of BMW, where they go back in time to the 1940s.
7. The show is definitely more like the early seasons of BMW, before they start focusing on true love and Cory and Topanga's relationship. Riley and Lucas have an obvious mutual attraction toward each other, but that's not going to be the major element of the show. You can tell that they are more friends than anything else. That's the one thing about this show that's better than Boy Meets World: It focuses more on friendship between the four kids than any romantic relationship.
Cons:
1. Cory had no control or authority whatsoever over his classroom. That never happened on Boy Meets World. All of the teachers (Feeny, Turner, Eli, Dean Bolander, even Stuart) had control over their classroom, but Cory just felt like another useless teacher from a lesser TV show. Don't get me wrong, the character of Cory is still strong and you can tell that he has the respect of his students and is a strong adult figure, but he just lets the kids in the class do or say whatever they want and walk all over him.
2. Lucas continues to show not much of a personality (then again, it's only the third episode). It seems like he just sits there and smiles all the time. This isn't the actor's fault, it's more of the fault of the writers who haven't given him any real good lines to establish his personality.
All in all, I liked the episode and I am definitely looking forward to more Girl Meets World. I like how the new characters are like their own characters. Like, how Farkle isn't just a copy of Minkus and how Maya isn't just a copy of Shawn. If you liked the first episode, I think you'll LOVE this episode. If you didn't like the first episode, I think you'll like this one way better. So, if you are a Boy Meets World fan, you should really check this out.
By the way, sorry if it's a bit too long, but I have so many thoughts on the show.
Mace Dolex 07-31-2014, 05:53 PM I watched a few of the early Boy Meets World but then lost track once they entered college that I didn't care for the lovey dovey sappiness it had sunkent into, GMW is just another show amongst Disney crap.
robyrob 08-01-2014, 06:21 PM But why would the Cory character be teaching in a classroom with his daughter as one of his students? LOL
i don't think that it is completely implausible, its when the kids have their parent - or even just the same person - as their teacher year after year that it gets far-fetched.
I like the show, I think the tone and humor is closer to the original show than it is to the typical Disney Channel tween show; its not going to appeal to everyone but fans of the original show should give it a chance.
JamesG 08-03-2014, 07:52 PM I recently got around to watching a few eps. of "Girl Meets World" off my DVR. I'm not quite digging it. The humor is, for lack of a better word, dumb and I'm not into these kids.
I'm pretty much only interested in Cory and Topanga and any other BMW alum appearances.
Also, I chuckle at the subway station scenes being that I'm a New Yorker. I've never seen a NYC subway station that clean and the extras in the background are way too slow to be New Yorkers.

I wonder if the idea of Cory being his daughter's teacher (besides for simple convenience reasons) is meant to be a "spin" on the concept of Mr. Feeny being Cory's teacher/high school principal on BMW while at the same time, being his next door neighbor.
