The actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York apartment on Sunday morning of an apparent drug overdose, according to a law enforcement official who requested anonymity because he was not certain the actor’s family had been informed of the death.

The official said Mr. Hoffman, 46, was found in his West Village apartment around 11:30 a.m. by a friend who had become concerned at not being able to reach Mr. Hoffman.

Investigators found a syringe in his arm and an envelope containing what is believed to be heroin, the official said.

“It’s pretty apparent that it was an overdose,” the official said. “The syringe was in his arm.”

Mr. Hoffman won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2005 for his role in “Capote,” in which he portrayed the writer Truman Capote.

He had undergone treatment for drug addiction in the past, and spoke in interviews about “falling off the wagon” last year after remaining clean for 23 years.

A woman answering the phone at Mr. Hoffman’s New York production company declined to comment. “I don’t have a comment at this time on that, thank you,” she said.

That's a gigantic surprise. I'm thinking either heart attack or drugs, and the only reason for the first of the two would be his weight.

My heart goes out to his kids and family and friends.
I always have told people that he and Kevin Spacey were the two greatest living actors actors.
Sad that he could not overcome his addiction.
Beginning to think that rehab just doesn't work.
Wonder if he was bullied when young leading for the need.
Life sucks sometimes.

An Oscar-winning actor dead after just 47 years of an apparent drug overdose?

I call that a devastating waste. And a tragic death like this tries to mar Super Bowl Sunday.:(

Hoffman left several projects unfinished, including a new series on Showtime titled Happyish, and was supposed to direct a film titled Ezekiel Moss this year.

I'm beginning to think that Hollywood needs a Wellness Policy. Actors, directors and crew members need to stay off drugs and substance abuse and steroids.

So sad; such a great talent and so young. He never really looked healthy. I used to comment to my husband that his drinking or whatever showed on his face. Never thought the whatever was heroin; that's hardcore. His poor children, now growing up without a father. Drugs suck, claimed both of my sisters' lives.

Devastating news. He truly was one of the very best. Talents like him do not come around too often. It is terrible that he fell back into drugs.

May he :rip:

They are now saying that they think that his dealers gave him bad heroin and that's what caused his death. I heard on the news that if they find the dealers. They may be tried for murder.

I know what he did was stupid. And, I am angry with the way he wasted his life. But, I loved that man as an actor and as a person. He was just so creative and down to earth at the same time. Every interview I saw him in. He was upbeat, happy, and very nice. To be clean for 23 years and then go back to doing horse. He had to have some sort of breakdown. Personally, I think it because he girlfriend dumped him after 14 years. I mean...that really had to hurt.

We never know why people (actors or just regular everyday people) do what they do. But, I have no business judging him on the way he died. God has a plan, we die the way he chooses us to die. I mean. Personally I think everyone has a destiny.

I will miss Phil. He was here for a reason. To make people laugh, cry, and everything in between.

My thoughts, and my prayers definitely go out to his family. Especially his children. His youngest, Willa is a year younger than I was when I lost my dad. And, I really wonder how she's gonna take it. Hopefully, she'll have memories of the good times she had with him. Like I did with my daddy. I just wanna hug his kids and tell them that everything will be okay.

Four People Arrested with Possible Ties to Philip Seymour Hoffman's Death
Feb 5, 2014
by Sadie Gennis

The New York Police Department has arrested four suspected heroin dealers with possible connections to the apparent overdose of Philip Seymour Hoffman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Four people were arrested earlier this evening under suspicion of narcotics offenses but whether they are connected to the Hoffman death or not is still under investigation, and the case is still developing," NYPD Detective Antonetti said Tuesday.

According to The New York Times, more than 350 bags of heroin were seized from the three apartments police raided in lower Manhattan Tuesday evening. The paper reports that law enforcement was led to the location by information stemming from the investigation into Hoffman's death.

The actor, who relapsed last year after 23 years of sobriety, was found dead Sunday with a needle in his arm and dozens of bags of heroin, some branded "Ace of Spades." The bags found during the arrest of the three men and one woman did not have that label, a law enforcement official told the Times.

Authorities are still awaiting autopsy results.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Autopsy Inconclusive, Further Tests Needed
by Jake Pearson and Tom Hays
02/05/14

An autopsy of Philip Seymour Hoffman's body is inconclusive, and tests will be needed to determine what caused his death, the city medical examiner's office said Wednesday.

Medical examiners' spokeswoman Julie Bolcer said there was no timetable for the autopsy to be finished. She declined to discuss the pending tests, but toxicology and tissue tests are typically done in such cases.

While awaiting the official findings on the cause and manner of the Academy Award-winning actor's death, police have been investigating it a suspected drug overdose.

Officials have been gathering pieces of the puzzle of what Hoffman was doing in the days and hours before his body was found, in his bathroom, around 11:30 a.m. the next day by his assistant and one of his friends. The friend had spoken to the actor by phone around 9 p.m. Saturday, a law enforcement official said.

His death came amid rising concern around the region about a powerful drug hybrid — mixtures of heroin and fentanyl, a synthetic form of morphine — that has been linked to deaths in other states, including 22 deaths within a week last month in western Pennsylvania. But the drug found at Hoffman's apartment tested negative for fentanyl, a police official said.

Philip Seymour Hoffman Died From Toxic Mix of Drugs
2/28/14
by Hilary Lewis

Philip Seymour Hoffman died of a toxic mix of drugs, including heroin, cocaine and other drugs, the New York City medical examiner's office told The Hollywood Reporter Friday.

Hoffman's official manner and cause of death is accidental acute mixed-drug intoxication, consisting of heroin, cocaine, benzodiazepines and amphetamine.

Friday's announcement ends a nearly monthlong mystery about Hoffman's cause of death, initially assumed to be a heroin overdose, as he was found with a needle sticking out of his arm on the bathroom floor of his New York City apartment.

The police found several envelopes of heroin, used and unused syringes and various prescription drugs in the West Village residence. According to CNN, investigators found more than 20 used syringes in a plastic cup and many bags containing white powder.

An initial autopsy on the Oscar-winning actor, performed shortly after he was found dead on Feb. 2, was inconclusive, meaning that further tests, including a toxicology study, would need to be done to determine his cause and manner of death.

The results of those tests show that Hoffman had also ingested cocaine and other drugs.

Hoffman had undergone treatment for drug addiction in the past and said last year that he had been clean for 23 years before "falling off the wagon" in 2012. In May, Hoffman entered a detox facility and completed a 10-day program for his use of prescription drugs and heroin.

The actor, who was laid to rest at a funeral attended by Hollywood's finest on Feb. 7, left behind three young children, Tallulah, Cooper and Willa, whom he had with his longtime partner, costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. He also had two sisters, Jill and Emily, and a brother, Gordy Hoffman, who scripted the 2002 film Love Liza, in which Philip starred.

The actor's will was revealed last week. In it, he left all his personal property to O'Donnell and set up a trust for his son, according to copies obtained by various media outlets.

Hoffman's will was written almost 10 years ago, prior to the birth of his two daughters. Hoffman also named O'Donnell as Cooper's guardian and the trustee of his funds.

Considered one of the finest actors of his generation, Hoffman won the best actor Oscar for his role as Truman Capote in 2005's Capote and received supporting actor Academy Award nods for his work in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Doubt (2008) and The Master (2012).

He received Tony Award noms for True West (2000), Long Day's Journey Into Night (2003) and, as Willy Loman, in Death of a Salesman (2012).

He recently appeared as Plutarch Heavensbee in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was set to repeat that role in the two-part final chapter of the Hunger Games series: Mockingjay. Indeed, Hoffman had nearly completed filming of Mockingjay -- Part 1, set for release in November and had seven days of filming remaining on Part 2.

He also was set to star in the Showtime series "Happyish".
