(Everyone begins running for cover as bloody holes erupt from the body bag as shots are fired in quick succession. Two officers fall, along with the coroner.)

(Jinny is still talking to Teddy when she hears the calamity outside. She hangs up quickly and goes to the bedroom for her weapon. She should have known Compton wouldn’t let things go smoothly. She picks up the radio to speak to the captain.)

Jinny: Captain. This is Jinny. What’s going on out there?

Kate: Jinny? Someone’s firing. They killed Warner, and the coroner. We have two officers down as well. Everything’s quiet now. I have officers searching the perimeter.

Jinny: I’m coming down.

Kate: No, you’re going to stay put.

Jinny: Captain, I’m not going to just sit here while people’s lives are in danger.

Kate: You have....

(A hand reached around Jinny and took the radio from her hands. Jinny turned; her weapon outstretched in her hand. Before she could turn completely, the gun was stripped from her hand and her arms restrained behind her, tightly, by strong hands. A familiar voice reached her ears. It was calm, but excited by the prospect of the action going on around him.)

Voice: Hello, doll.

Jinny: (fear, trying not to let it show) Compton?

Lex: Going somewhere?

Jinny: How’d you get in?

Lex: Talent, my dear. The same way we’re getting out.

Jinny: I’m not going anywhere with you.

Lex: (face close, Jinny can feel his breath on her ear) On the contrary, you’ll go anywhere with me.

Jinny: (calm) And what makes you so sure of that?

Lex: (still close, whispering) Because you still love me. And if you don’t, (Jinny feels the cold steel of his gun on her other cheek) ...then I have no use for you. Now, you call your Captain, and you tell her we’re leaving. Tell her to back off.

Jinny: No one could love someone like you.

Lex: But you did, my dear. You did, didn’t you. Every last, miserable inch of me, and you loved every minute of it.

Jinny: (trying to convince herself) No. It was my job. I never loved you.

Lex: (laughs) You just keep trying to convince yourself of that. You were my one mistake; and I assure you, I won’t make it again.

(The radio in Compton’s hand continues to sound; Kate looking for Jinny. Compton thrusts the radio back up on Jinny’s face.)

Lex: Tell her we’re coming out and to back off.

Jinny: (weak voice) Cap... it’s Jinny.

Kate: Where the hell have you been?

Jinny: Um, he’s here.

Kate: He? Who? Who’s there? Compton?

Jinny: Yes. And he wants out, or he’ll kill me. You’ve got to pull back and let him out.

Kate: I can’t do that Jinny. I have officers in the building now. I don’t have contact with them. This is it, Jinny. He has to give himself up. No negotiations.

Jinny: (knew this was the signal for plan B to be initiated) (panicked) Captain, he’ll kill me.

Kate: I’m sorry, Jinny, I can’t stop it now. It’s over for him. He has half an hour to surrender. (not to Jinny, but to an officer outside, into the still open airway) Looks like a good way to get rid of another bad officer.

Voice: (an officer by the captain outside; questioning) Captain?

Kate: She’s an alcoholic, she’ll never change. It was only a matter of time before she screwed up again.

Voice: (hesitant) Uh, yes, ma’am.

Jinny: (slumps slightly in Compton’s grasp at the captain’s words)

Lex: (grip still tight) Looks like they value your talent.

Jinny: I’ve busted my ass for them this past year.

Lex: Looks like you should have stuck with me when you had the chance, huh?

Jinny: (shrugged)

(Jinny and Compton were quiet for a few minutes. Compton made Jinny sit down on the bed and threatened her if she moved. She watched him pace the floor for several minutes. He would stop and stare at her then begin pacing again, trying to clear his head.)

(Teddy rushed toward Kate. Two officers immediately stopped him, but he called out to her and she gave the officers orders to permit him to pass. He continued toward her until he was standing by the car, staring up at Jinny’s apartment building.)

Kate: You should have stayed put, Mr. Blumenthal.

Teddy: I was talking to Jinny. I heard shots fired. What’s going on? Is Jinny okay?

Kate: As far as I know, Jinny is fine. Compton killed Warner. He’s in her apartment.

Teddy: How’d he get in there?

Kate: We’re not sure, but he isn’t getting out. We have officers in the building. Waiting for my word.

(The radio on top of Kate’s car had been silent during her exchange with Teddy. It now came to life with Compton and Jinny’s latest discussion. Kate and Teddy listened intently to every word spoken.)

Lex: I could have given you the world.

Jinny: But at what cost?

Lex: You loved me once.

Jinny: (shakes her head) No. I didn’t love what you did and what you do is who you are; and I can’t love that.

Lex: Why not? I gave you everything you wanted. I still could.

Jinny: But you kill people to do it.

Lex: (becoming irrational) No.

Jinny: Look outside, John. You’re still killing people.

Lex: You kill people.

Jinny: That’s different.

Lex: How?

Jinny: I don’t kill people for my own gain. My job is to protect innocent people from people like you.

Lex: Oh, so now I’m a bad person?

Jinny: What you do is bad, yes. You’re not going to make it out of here alive unless you give yourself up.

Lex: I’m not going back to prison. I won’t.

Jinny: Then you won’t get out alive.

Lex: Yes, I will. And you’re going to help me.
Jinny: No. I won’t help you, John. I won’t help you hurt anyone else.

Lex: Then, I’ll kill you!

(Compton rushes toward Jinny gun outstretched. As soon as he is in reaching distance, Jinny stands quickly and knocks the gun out of his hand. It fires as she hits his hand. The window is shattered and glass rains down on those closest to the building.)

(Teddy attempts to rush the building and it’s all Kate can do to hold him back until two officers can restrain him. There are sounds of more struggle in the apartment, and Teddy is silent, listening; shaking from fear. He keeps watching Kate, willing her to instruct the officers to enter Jinny’s apartment. After several more minutes of struggle, another gun shot sounds and Kate gives the command to enter the apartment carefully. Teddy and Kate both sigh in relief as Jinny’s voice sounds over the radio one last time.)

Jinny: What the hell took you so long?!

Well, had I known this was going to end here, I would have warned you, but I was just writing along and thought, you know, this is a great place to end this. So here it is.......

(The all clear is given and Teddy and Kate race into the apartment building and up to Jinny’s apartment. Jinny is shaken as Teddy takes her in his arms. He continually speaks in a hushed tone, trying to calm himself as much as her. Kate gives them a few minutes then interrupts.)

Kate: What happened?

Jinny: You tell me. I did my part with Warner.

Kate: Warner’s dead.

Jinny: Yeah, I caught that part. How’d he get in here? (nodding her head to indicate the barely breathing Compton, that was being taken out on a stretcher)

Kate: Unknown. All that matters is it’s over. Why don’t you pack some clothes. Go back to the hotel with Mr. Blumenthal. Take the rest of the week off. I’ll have the Department send someone to clean up this mess and fix the window. I’ll see you on Monday.

Jinny: Another week off. What am I supposed to do with another week off?

Kate: (glances back and forth between Teddy and Jinny) Oh, I’m sure you’ll think of something. Get some rest tonight.

(Kate and the other officers are soon gone, leaving Jinny in Teddy’s arms. They stand in the middle of her bedroom floor, splotches of blood decorating the floor around them, holding each other. Both relieved to finally be alone, together, again. Finally, they parted and Jinny dug her luggage out of her closet and began to pack. Half way through the task, Teddy sat down on the bed, by her suitcase, watching her.)

Teddy: You know, this has been pretty traumatic for me, too.

Jinny: (smiling) It has, huh?

Teddy: Yes, it has. I could take the rest of the week off too, and we could go on vacation. (pausing briefly, testing the waters) Maybe a honeymoon.

Jinny: (stops packing, watching Teddy) A honeymoon? Don’t you have to be married to go on a honeymoon?

Teddy: Minor technicality that could be resolved on the way.

Jinny: (continues packing) Mr. Blumenthal, yourself being a lawyer, you know there are laws, waiting limits...

Teddy: Well, I know this little place in Vegas...

Jinny: Vegas? Well, what would your parents think?

Teddy: My parents? Oh, are you referring to the random threats that I get from my mother, that if I would ever elope, she’d disown me? Nah, she’s only joking. (smiling) I hope.

Jinny: (looks at him sideways, smiling)

Teddy: (gets up and takes her hands, turning her towards him) Come on.

Jinny: (puts her arms around, puts her head on his chest, avoiding his gaze)

Teddy: I love you Jinny. Words can’t describe how much I love you.

Jinny: I love you, too.

Teddy: So marry me. Tomorrow, and...

Jinny: (laughing, looking around at her apartment)

Teddy: What?

Jinny: Won’t this be a story to tell our kids? How you proposed to me at a crime scene, with blood all around.

Teddy: We can skip that part.

Jinny: (teasing) Oh, I don’t know, adds depth.

Teddy: You’re talking about kids? Does that mean you’re accepting?

Jinny: Um, I’ll think about it. (still teasing) On our way to Vegas. But I didn’t really say anything about kids.

Teddy: (as they are walking out the door) Yes, you did.

Jinny: Okay, Counselor. That part, we’re going to have to renegotiate. (door closes behind them)

Well there it is. I have no ideas for another fic yet, but another one has not been ruled out completely. I just need a little time to be creative. If any of you have any ideas you would like to see in a serious fic, let me know.
