Edith is not really seen at all in this 1st season and I am just wondering why was the Stephanie character still on the show? At that point she wasn't even needed since this show was more of an adult show. Stephanie looked so dumb running inside the bar to say something to Archie:lol:

BTW: it got to the point that Edith wasn't even referred to anymore to explain where she was

Regarding Edith: If they mentioned her whereabouts every episode that she was not on, it would be overkill. She occasionally got a reference which was better. Stephanie? Well, I can kind of see your point. At least they stuck with the actress and made it work for later seasons.

Let's just face it. The whole idea for this series was pretty dumb. They would have been better off ending AITF when Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers left.

No it wasn't because I got to see the side of Archie I never saw on AITF

Archie at work and Archie around his friends

Perhaps, but it was a side of Archie that wasn't particularly interesting. He became too mellow on this show.

I'm glad that he mellowed out. It goes back to what I said regarding him evolving.

I understand why Stephanie was on.
It was to bring in a younger generation.
Also, viewers would still get to see Archie in a fatherly role. Even more so, since Gloria was an adult on AITF.

Steffie was a second daughter to Archie, which gave some insight of his character as a father and what he was probably like when Gloria was growing up.

From all the episodes I seen during season 1, she had a very small role and really could have been eliminated

But her role increased after Jean S. left. With Jean S. no longer on the show, it opened the door for more scenes at the house with Stephanie. Danielle B. did very well in the role.

Stephanie on this show was like

Charlie the bartender on the Jeffersons

Mike the bartender on Three's Company

Wanda on Good Times

Rob on What's Happeninig:lol:

I think her role was bigger than that. She became a more featured character as the seasons progressed. I thought that she did very well.

Wait! Do you mean in one scene per episode? If so, that means you have not seen eps from season two and beyond because she all up those episodes!!! She had some good ones.

I haven't seen these episodes since they first aired pretty much, but true I do remember Dannielle had some pretty large roles at times.

Still watching the end of season 1. Well that means I won't like season 2 that much because I don't watch kids on TV when it''s supposed to be an adult show

Until you see the rest of the seasons, you have to keep an open mind. With Edith out of the picture, more scenes take place at home and open the door to more at home storylines. We can ask how Mrs. Canby fits into a show about Archie running a bar. However, she was the housekeeper/sitter for Stephanie at home. We are able to see more of Archie's home life and that is where Stephanie fits in.

That's why they killed Edith off. They wanted to expand the show to include Archie's home life as well.

Exactly! Solomon has got to finish watching the rest of the seasons. He will see how Stephanie fits in more.

The reason Stephanie was on the show was because whenever a once-great show becomes tired and stale, they bring on a child character to deliver the final death blows to the show.

Guess they had to do something since it was just Archie and Edith

Yeah, that's the predicament into which a lot of sitcoms over the decades have fallen. More broadly, it wasn't always child characters that were brought into a sagging show. In the case of The Brady Bunch, it was a child (Oliver). In the case of, say, Everybody Loves Raymond, it was the (terrible) characters of Robert's in-laws.

The truth is that all these shows over the years had run out of storyline potential with the principal characters, but since the shows were still pulling ratings and everyone was still making money, the network convinced them to continue by introducing new characters for new storylines. Rarely (if ever) worked.

But in some cases it was unnecessary, like on Good Times and Brady Bunch

It was already enough characters

I think Stephanie was supposed to give Archie someone to love and to rough out his edges. He was still a Conservative but his bigotry had leveled out.

Unfortunately after Edith was bumped off they were really at a crossroads with the Stephanie character. The first 2 seasons almost the entire show revolved around her. She felt like a true co star. Then in season 3 Danielle Brisebois had become a beautiful young woman thus couldn't do the cute kid stuff anymore. But she wasn't old enough yet for more adult parts and they had brought in Denise Miller for that. It created a quandary as it seemed they were walking a tightrope trying to find ways to keep her involved but in a more periphery way to free up Uncle Arch to do more mature episodes that didn't involve Stephie as much. More action was centered around the 'Bar, they added Gary, and the handful of episodes they did every season that focused on Barney, Harry, Jose/ Raoul, and Mr. VanR pushed lovely Miss Mills to the back burner. I give them credit for at least keeping her on the show. They could have easily shipped her off to San Fran w/her 'Uncle Murray' or let her go live with her rich grandmother.

They decreased her screen time and increased the screen time for gary and billie

Here are a couple interviews after the departure of Balsam talking about how lovely Danielle Brisebois would have to shoulder additional on the show the following season. But when season 3 arrived there was Billie and eventually Gary and Stephanie's role progressively shrunk instead of getting bigger. I wonder what lead to the change of planned direction?

Yeah, but that transition began during season 1 and had been completed well before these interviews. Something must have spooked CBS to shy away from her.
