HoneyMooners was way ahead of it's time and I Love Lucy was not on the same level

I Love Lucy was a 50's version of the Brady Bunch and the HoneyMooners was a 50's version of All in the Family

I Love Lucy is much better than The Brady Bunch. The only comparison I see is how cartoonish these shows were at times.

The Honeymooners was more of an adult show, dealing with more serious topics. It does almost feel like a 70's sitcom. Lucy Ricardo was fantastic, but Ralph Kramden is one of my favorite characters ever. Lucy was always trying to break into show business. She performed endless physical comedy. Ralph was always coming up with ideas to better life for him and Alice. The Honeymooners was more realistic, and full of heart.

I grew up on reruns of both I Love Lucy and The Honeymooners. I've always loved The Honeymooners more. It's still one of my top ten shows of all time.

I like The Honeymooners but LOVE LOVE LOVE I Love Lucy. Also, as talented as Jackie Gleason was, Lucy was the more gifted physical comedienne - and she did it first!

Outside of the fact that both shows have endured since the 50's they are not comparable. I Love Lucy is the mother of the modern sitcom, while the Honeymooners is a glorified skit. Gleason was fully capable of developing the Honeymooners into a full sitcom, but I don't believe he wanted that. The Honeymooners was a skit on Gleason's variety show in the early 50's he spun it off for one season (giving birth to the classic 39), and then merged it back into a variety show format. I think this is what makes it so funny. The plots are paper thin so you can get right into the comedy material. It's unfortunate to a certain extent that the body of Jackie s work in the 50's isn't fully appreciated.

I Love Lucy in my opinion is in the mix of any discussion of the greatest shows of all time. The show is almost a documentary of the hopes, desires and the experiences of the American public of the early 50's. Everything from having a baby, to driving across country, to moving to the suburbs is there.

The Honeymooners is similar to Family Matters i wonder why Ralph has the same personality as Carl and Alice has the same sassy personality as Harriet lol.

MacLeaper

I can see that somewhat. However, that's a popular mold and the same could be said for other shows- "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" comes to mind. And there's a similar dynamic with "Gimme A Break" to some degree. "The Flintstones" of course. And perhaps "Home Improvement" as well.
(Of course, this mold does get inverted at times too of course. Not every sitcom follows that structure- but there are a number of ones that have used it well.)

I Love Lucy ran for 6 seasons and 180 episodes. I think The Honeymooners would be mostly an afterthought today, if not for that one season with the classic 39 half hour episodes. So to me, it's unfair to compare these two shows. However, since the question was presented, I'll go with The Honeymooners. I was never really that fond of I Love Lucy. Some episodes are OK, but I prefer The Lucy Show.

Going with this logic, I'll give to Lucy based on quality over a longer period of time. But this is a good heavyweight fight.

I Love Lucy definitely! Funny humor, excellent chemistry (on screen at least), Lucy's hair- brained schemes. That made for some excellent comedy!

The Honeymooners, on the other hand, weren't funny to me. It had a more realistic portrayal of life and what it brings. That's why I didn't like it.

Sorry, but I like Tv that allows me to escape reality for 30 minutes or an 1 hour.

Lucy Ricardo was an annoying parasite and shameless attention-seeker, who, to my mind, tried way too hard for her laughs (including a lot of gimmicks, like the trip to California), and never got them (from me, anyway). Fred Mertz was occasionally amusing, but all played the "straight man" to Lucy's lame hi-jinx. Her enduring popularity escapes me.

Ralph Kramden, like Lucy, was always either scheming or completely misunderstanding what was really going on, but seeing him regularly fail was comedy gold, due to Gleason's amazing facial expressions and body language... plus, there were the equally-amusing antics of his pal, Ed Norton, so you got double the laughs.

Seeing Ralph clumsily hurt himself (and the pain dance that would follow), chew out Alice or Ed, trade barbs with his mother-in-law, have his eyes pop out in surprise, pantomime a stroke and faint, seethe with anger or wither in embarrassment, was funnier than anything in Lucille Ball's long, dull career (though I do like her in some serious movies she made before she entered television, like FIVE CAME BACK (1939) and LURED (1947), and I'm glad Desilu produced a lot of good shows in the 1950s and 1960s).

So--

Advantage: Honeymooners.

The Honeymooners by a mile. I know Lucy is a classic and all, but I never could much get into it. While in general I like Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance I didn't care for Desi Arnaz or William Frawley. And I'm only an occassional fan of slapstick type comedy. If I had to pick I'd rather watch the Lucy Show than I Love Lucy.
