TVFactFan 11-16-2013, 04:34 PM continuation.....ABP
Is it as watchable as AITF? Or did it only have good ratings because of Carroll OConnor and the time slot?
Zoneboy 11-16-2013, 04:49 PM Archie Bunker's Place wasn't a spinoff, it was a continuation.

Yeah continuation. Did u ever watch it?

I've seen a few episodes and like it as much as Aitf.
Mr. Television 11-16-2013, 06:52 PM I liked the show. It wasn't as good as AITF though but it was very watchable to me.

you never saw it, Sol?
I didn't think it was as good or as funny as AITF, but it was watchable.
Dude111 11-17-2013, 06:39 AM I liked the show. It wasn't as good as AITF though but it was very watchable to me.I didnt really ever watch too many of those shows........... It was OK I guess :)

I started watching yesterday and so far in season 1 I can see some differences
1. Stephanie has a lot of mouth
2. Archie is more mellow
3. Murray is the straight man for Stephanie, Edith, and Archie
OH Nuts! 11-17-2013, 02:45 PM I liked ABP but LOVED AITF. When Jean Stapleton left the show, she left a big hole. R.I.P. Jean!

Regarding a lot of mouth, Veronica the cook wins that category hands down. It was a fine entertaining show but....how do you follow....or hold your own with AITF. You can't!

They have the Stephanie character being disrespectful and using words like HOOKER.
Was she like this on season 9 of AITF?

No, The way I remember things in AITF she was dealing with being left with the Bunkers. Archie kept after Edith about shipping her to other family but Edith seen the need and Mothered Stephanie. Archie did come around and accepted her into the family. She seemed spunky not mouthy.

After 7 episodes in season 1 of ABP she had no respect for Archie and does not take him seriously. Edith is barely around and he is taking care of her alone and she just mouths off and says whatever she wants

yea, watching it without Edith was sort of like watching the last season of BONANZA. It just wasn't the same without Hoss.

Not to me, it's a new side of archie we never saw on AITF
the side of him when he is not around his family
TheCars1986 11-18-2013, 12:01 PM Anything with Archie would be watchable, so I enjoyed the few episodes I saw.
GameShowFan66 11-21-2013, 01:18 PM It was alright, but there was something very sorrowful to me about the program, especially after they killed off Edith. The house wasn't featured very much, and when it was, it just felt so empty, so cold, even the lighting was darker. It wasn't performed in front of a live studio audience either, which left the show feeling much more bland. AITF had a very crisp and almost frenetic energy from the live studio audience.
ABP turned part time characters into full time ones. Allan Melvin was a superb character actor, but episodes devoted to Barney Hefner were meh at best. I was never much of a bar person anyway, which is probably why this program, and "Cheers" never resonated with me too much.
That being said, Archie Bunker's Place is like Shakespeare compared to the trash that's on the airwaves today. Only one current sitcom that I enjoy and that makes me laugh out loud the way AITF did.

To me Edith was DEAD in season 1 because she was barley seen the entire season. lol Not sure why Jean Stapleton even signed up for the role

Maybe "Edith" came back so Carroll O'Connor could win a Peabody Award for the episode where she dies. :)

She did the right thing by leaving ABP because she wasn't needed

Yes, there was this sad part to it: Edith's dying did put a sad pallor on things. But Jean and Carroll were the corner pins of the show. Jean's SUPERB portrayal of the many-nuanced Edith added that special extra dimension. ABP was a good show, but Jean's continued presence would have made it great. I missed her on any ep of ABP where she wasn't there.
I also agree that most shows today fall short in comparison to ABP.
OH Nuts! 11-22-2013, 09:16 AM She did the right thing by leaving ABP because she wasn't needed
We all have our own take on things, but I totally disagree. Edith ALWAYS added much to the show, and still would have in this new context. Her daffy ways, that well done contrast between her naïveté and her high EQ(emotional IQ) added MUCH to any ep. Her strong sense of decency and deep compassion of others contrasted nicely with Archie's crustiness and rationalizations of unkind and/or unethical behavior. Even though Archie mellowed in ABP, Edith would have still complimented him. If ever a show jumped the shark, then losing the Edith was the perfect example. IMO anyways.

Mike and Gloria leaving was one thing, but I agree that killing off Edith also killed off any chance of ABP being as successful as AITF.

I don't really know how since Jean Stapleton had no intention of appearing on the show any longer.

If the show took place 95% of the time at the bar then why she was needed?
Stephanie wasn't needed either

After Edith died, they did show his house a lot more. The first season was a little awkward.

Now that sounds odd, I don't think I need to see him in the house at all without edith.
Just the bar and other places
OH Nuts! 11-23-2013, 12:05 AM If the show took place 95% of the time at the bar then why she was needed?
Stephanie wasn't needed either
1- Because she complimented his personality, and this worked in any venue
2- she was his wife and signed papers helping him get the bar
3- Jean Stapleton is a wonderful actress, who COULD ONLY ADD to any scene
4-she could help him in the bar
5- having her come in cemented the tie and transition from AITF
6- she is just downright funny, in her daffy dingbat way
I thought the story plots with Stephanie worked nicely. But had Edith remained, perhaps Stephanie wouldn't be needed as much. But she was still a nice touch, and a decent enough replacement for Gloria.

But it was clear from ep 1 of the first season that the show was going to be a workplace comedy so that's why I didn't see the point of edith since the house would not be seen that much
GameShowFanMan66 04-26-2014, 08:37 PM Plus my understanding was that Ms. Stapleton had grown weary of the role, and felt there was nowhere further to go with the Edith character. Much the same way Larry Linville bowed out after MASH's 5th season as Frank Burns.
She was very much missed by me though. It wasn't until recently that I was able to even begin watching my All in the Family DVDs again after Jean Stapleton's death, which was almost a year ago already. My mother, who died in 2001, was a little bit like Edith in some ways, so watching episodes on DVD make me miss my mother less, and at the same time, makes me miss her more, if that makes any sense. Plus my mom and dad loved "All in the Family" when it first aired on CBS. Not long after Mike & Gloria left for California in the spring of 1978, my dad died, so I suppose that's another reason season 9 of the show leaves me feeling rather "blah".
