View Full Version : 80s comedies you've sampled since 2000 but didn't like?
bmasters9 11-13-2013, 06:08 AM What is at least one comedy of the 80s you've sampled since '00 but have not really liked?
For me, that would have to be Designing Women. I very recently purchased the #1 DVD release, because I thought that it would be a very funny show (I had seen some at my sister's house in 'Bama a time back and had that impression). Appearances are very deceiving, however-- I found it to be very unfunny and tedious, and in spots, very didactic.
Mr. Television 11-13-2013, 02:09 PM I can't really say since 2000 since I watched them in their original run but the one show from the 1980's that I did not like was Designing Women.

I'm glad that the feeling is mutual! Did you dislike it along the same lines I did, or did you have different reasons?
Buffyboy323 11-13-2013, 05:10 PM Shows from the 1980's I discovered in the 2000's and didn't care for:
Alf - The Hub has aired the show for a few years now. I was excited to sample complete episodes at first, but didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. I can list a handful of shows The Hub should have kept instead.
Bosom Buddies - It wasn't horrible, but it certainly wasn't a favorite. This was a "blind" sample on TBS in the early '00s. I watched about 15 episodes on Saturday mornings. I don't think I'll watch the show again.
The Cosby Show - Definitely not the worst show of the '80s. But I still don't understand the big fuss and popularity surrounding this show. I saw a few episodes on WPIX during the '90s, but didn't really sample it until 2002 on TBS and Nick at Nite. Though I've attempted several times on TV and never made it through, I do have half the series in my collection. I hope to watch the entire series sometime down the line. But as of the last decade, the show hasn't won me over.
Kate & Allie - I only watched a few DVD episodes, and I believe the show had a very short run on Oxygen this past decade. I didn't like any of the characters or stories. The show also seemed very oddly dated.
bmasters9 11-13-2013, 05:14 PM I even tried Webster, the 1983-89 ABC/syndicated comedy starring Emmanuel Lewis, in its #1 release-- I believe I found it at least as unwatchable as DW (I forget whether it was for the same reasons or different reasons).
MacLeaper 11-18-2013, 06:00 PM All of the shows mentioned thus far are fun and funny enough to me- particularly ALF- I love that show. And Webster too. The Cosby Show is a great show too. Kate & Allie, Designing Women and Bosom Buddies- I have seen some of all of them, but I don't care that much about them. But I do love the theme song for "Bosom Buddies"- Billy Joel's "My Life". And it is pretty funny to see Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari working together on that show, since I like both actors pretty well.
For 1980s comedies I don't like- I remember "Married...With Children" and "Roseanne" when they first started in the '80s- I didn't like them and I don't like them now. They're both generally rude and crass and not my favorites- no offense to any fans of these.
MacLeaper 11-22-2013, 02:17 PM Oh yeah- "Murphy Brown" is another sitcom from the 1980s that I don't like.

I've never even really tried it. What is it about Murphy that you do not like?
70s show watcher 11-22-2013, 06:32 PM Oh yeah- "Murphy Brown" is another sitcom from the 1980s that I don't like.i never cared too much for murphy brown ether
tlc38tlc38 11-22-2013, 06:42 PM I've always been a "Murphy Brown" fan. I love the cast---it's one of the best ensemble casts in history.
george ho 11-23-2013, 02:34 AM Diff'rent Strokes - majority of seasons were '80s. However, the dialogue was too straight-forward and less witty. And the characters don't interest me.
Designing Women - just plain dull, and jokes were too contrived
Perfect Strangers - the accent of some cousin is very grating
Kate & Allie - stories unmemorable
The Golden Girls - funny when you first watch every episode. However, Blanche's repetitive sex stories, Rose's dumb demeanor, Dorothy's uptightness and seriousness, and Sophia's cruelty get to me. And they are everywhere in every episode.
Night Court - Just weird and contrived
Some show starring Alan Thicke and some kid named "Cameron" or something, who is now a grown-up devout Christian - just never bearable when you watch it again, especially the stories
MacLeaper 11-25-2013, 04:02 PM I've never even really tried it. What is it about Murphy that you do not like?
Some of the storylines and moral stances on issues. I do recall that it was pretty infamous for a while because it depicted Murphy Brown having a child out of wedlock in a positive manner, rather than as adultery and not a thing to be celebrated. (Vice President Dan Quayle decried this at the time.)
Honestly though, it's been a long time since I've seen it- I just never remember getting into it much as a kid. I suppose I could try it again at some point- but I don't really have access to the show and don't really care about watching it.

I particularly love "Perfect Strangers" and "Growing Pains" and "Diff'rent Strokes" myself- the rest of the shows listed are generally okay too (though not all are the best.) That's okay though- to each his own.
thebloodyscot 12-07-2013, 11:20 AM I agree on Designing Women (it's ok but not that great), Kate & Allie (boring), Bosom Buddies (not that great), Married...With Children, Roseanne, The Golden Girls (I think they're all awful)
Also Square Pegs (boring), Barney Miller (really boring) (lasted into the 80s)
Gimme a break and Hogan Family are ok although kinda boring

I remember getting into Designing Women when it was on Nick@Nite and was mad when it was removed lol
TVFactFan 12-07-2013, 04:15 PM 2 shows from the 80's i sampled and didn't like
Flo
Joanie Loves Chachi
megamanj2004 12-07-2013, 06:50 PM Designing Women - like the cast but the show is a bit dull at times.
Murphy Brown - A perfect example of a long-running show does not necessarily mean a good thing...in terms of syndication. And this show exemplifies that. The topics and overall topical nature are just too dated.
Kate and Allie - if not for the theme song I would never get into this show at all. Blah at best.
Growing Pains - I admit I like the earlier seasons before the show's direction became affected by the backstage politics of a one Kirk Cameron otherwise this show is too hokey overall.
Head of the Class - Something about this show just irks me somewhere...
Charles in Charge - I used to like it as a kid, not so much now, especially the syndie years (the Powell-era)

Surpisingly Head of the Class was in the top 30 for all 5 seasons. I know i was watching lol
KatieAnn 12-07-2013, 07:57 PM Oh yeah- "Murphy Brown" is another sitcom from the 1980s that I don't like.
The thing about Murphy Brown (to me) is that Candice Bergin delivers her lines in a way you'd expect a journalist who is appearing on a tv show to deliver them, not quite convincingly, so it kind of feels like she is a journalist pretending to be an actress instead of an actress who is playing a journalist.

It was such a flop on Nick at Nite.
TVFactFan 12-07-2013, 08:35 PM It was such a flop on Nick at Nite.
well it's a 8pm type of show, if Nick aired it at 11pm then that's probably why

I don't ever remember HOTC airing in primetime on N@N. I just remember it and Perfect strangers airing at 3 in the morning. I don't think they gave it a chance.

Well there you go, that's why it failed lol
That is the type of show that should only be on TV from 8pm to 9pm
Even 11pm is too late lol

You make it sound like Full House or Saved by the Bell.
They never gave Charles In Charge a chance either. Another 4:00am show.
Three's A Crowd is another show I've sampled since 2000 and just didn't like.

Well you must not be a TC company fan because if you were then you would atleast feel that TAC is watchable lol
ThomasE 12-07-2013, 10:25 PM It was such a flop on Nick at Nite.
It wasn't a flop. It just aired at 4 am in the morning as a filler space. The network acquired the rights to a handful of episodes and ran them over and over again. Then added some more episodes into the mix and ran them over and over again. Charles in Charge only had seasons 2 to 4 running on NAN as well when it aired overnight.

BIG Three's Company fan here. Three's A Crowd was a show from the '80s that I sampled in the mid-00's and didn't really care for. It isn't unwatchable, it just wasn't a favorite.
