View Full Version : Popular '80s and '90s sitcoms that have disappeared from syndication?
Buffyboy323 10-29-2013, 02:52 PM What are some (fairly) popular shows from the 1980's and 1990's that have disappeared from syndication over the last decade or two? When was the last time you saw them?
1980's
Archie Bunker's Place - TV Land had the show in the mid-2000's. I don't remember if they even finished the first run. I wasn't watching TV Land much when this show aired.
Charles In Charge - After not seeing the show since the mid-'90s on WPIX, I was excited to find this on during the wee hours of Nick at Nite in 2003-2004. I last saw the show on my local WWOR channel around 2006.
Dear John - Last seen on my local WWOR channel around 1997-1998.
Eight Is Enough - Last seen on PAX TV in Summer 2000. I could be wrong...
Growing Pains - It lasted a week or two on Nick at Nite in the mid-2000's. Teen Nick aired it in 2011 for a few weeks at 5:00am.
Harry and the Hendersons - Last seen in the Summer of 1997 or 1998 on my local WNYW channel, part of an afternoon block, alongside Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie.
Head of the Class - Nick at Nite in the early-2000's.
The Hogan Family - ABC Family for a few weeks in 2006.
1990's
Blossom - WPIX last aired the show around 1996-1997. I haven't seen it on TV since.
Saved by the Bell: The New Class - USA aired the show from 1997 until around 2001. It's been long forgotten in 2013.
Hang Time - ABC Family aired the show in the afternoon around 2002-2004.
City Guys - Not a show I need to watch again, but enjoyed as a kid. Reruns were on BET not too long ago. But that was either a stunt, or it did that horrible, because it was gone in weeks.
Jesse - ABC Family aired it on weekends years ago, after USA dropped it.
Unhappily Ever After - Last seen on my local FOX station in 2000 and 2001.
I can't even recall the last time these sitcoms were in syndication:
Empty Nest
Mr. Belvedere
My Two Dads
Punky Brewster
Silver Spoons

irehtman 10-29-2013, 03:34 PM There is no doubt about putting Hang Time on DVD, but it should be in a complete DVD box set containing all 104 episodes in all six season, including closed captions. It has many good reasons, but if you disagree, then I will explain it thoroughly.

Feel free to explain thoroughly why, of all shows, Hang Time should be released in a complete series box set.
I can think of a few other "forgotten" shows from the last thirty years that should be released on DVD before that one.

EmoJoe 10-30-2013, 01:47 AM It's interesting how some shows, no matter how big they were when they ran first-run, just don't stand the test of time. I'd say most of these shows do feel pretty dated now though.

irehtman 10-30-2013, 08:22 AM Feel free to explain thoroughly why, of all shows, Hang Time should be released in a complete series box set.
I can think of a few other "forgotten" shows from the last thirty years that should be released on DVD before that one.
Hang Time had too many cast changes like Saved By the new Class, but it turns out that too many hang Time cast changes wasn't that bad at all:
* Most supporting cast members get changed.
* The cast is even-numbered (eight) and the cast changes is also even-numbered (2 or 4).
* They did not change both the main character (Daniella Deutscher as Julie Connor) and the funniest supporting character (Megan Parlen as Mary Beth Pepperton).
Shows that contain cast changes are very hard to be put in DVDs. But what I saying is reasonable and that's why Hang Time should be on DVD and I have to predict that this show should be put in a complete DVD series box set, including closed captions.

DALLAS (you'd think that with the TNT revival being a hit, the reruns would turn up some where. But to be fair, I read that those prime-time soaps are hard to show in reruns)
littletydramon 11-03-2013, 01:50 PM Major Dad is another very popular one that I dont think EVER got reran on any major mainstream channels. Golden Palace also hasnt aired again I dont think in close to 10 years. Becker was on WGN but hasnt that been off for a few years now?
DJM77 11-03-2013, 02:13 PM Major Dad is another very popular one that I dont think EVER got reran on any major mainstream channels. Becker was on WGN but hasnt that been off for a few years now?
USA used to air Major Dad. Becker still airs on Reelz.
The only one of these out of all of them listed that need to come back would be The Drew Carey Show. I'd like to see how it has held up since I watched in back in middle school.
Furienna 11-03-2013, 06:22 PM I haven't seen "Blossom" or "Hangin' out with Mr Cooper" since the mid-'00s. One channel over here in Sweden did show "Murphy Brown" not that many years ago.

I'm not sure I would watch these if they were in syndication today. But these were fairly popular shows in their day, mainly Silver Spoons. I heard it used to come on my local WNYW at 5:00pm during the very early '90s. These shows are stuck in that time period and haven't been popular since.
LUNCH 11-04-2013, 03:24 PM Just because many shows, especially older shows do not air in syndication really has nothing to do with how good or popular those shows were and are. Most cable channels especially, offer very little variety for obvious reasons ie:they are lazy and only care about how many commercials they can sell etc.
Yong Fang 11-05-2013, 11:16 AM I believe Empty Nest was on the hallmark Channel a few years ago. It didn't last long though. I know Mr. Belvaedere was on one of my local channel in the ealy 90's.
Empty Nest was a really good show with Richard Mulligan playing the lead, Park Overall the nurse, and the (how many daughters did he have) at home. There was even a mystery daughter who came later on the scene.
Also produced by Susan Harris, who was behind Soapmand Golden Girls.
Furienna 11-05-2013, 12:03 PM "Empty nest" is another show, that I haven't seen on any TV channel since the '90s. By the way, I believe that he had three daughters: Barbara, Carole and Emily.
lucy&vivfan 11-05-2013, 06:24 PM I think most sitcoms have a relatively short life in reruns. Sure, you have "I Love Lucy", "the Golden Girls" and a few other shows that have managed to stay on the air for decades in reruns, but that isn't the norm. Every fall, you have new shows going into syndication and other shows have to pulled to make way for the new sitcoms that will air in reruns for a few years until they are pulled to pave way for the new ones. It goes on and on.
tlc38tlc38 11-05-2013, 07:20 PM Other shows that have disappeared:

In all honesty, I probably wouldn't watch these shows in syndication but I would buy them if they we're released on DVD. I already own seasons 1 & 2 of "Small Wonder", season 1 of "Silver Spoons", & season 1 of "Punky Brewster".

Most sitcoms have a relatively short life in syndication? I don't think that's true. I Love Lucy, All in the Family, Three's Company, M*A*S*H, Cheers, Roseanne, Seinfeld, and many others haven't been off TV since they premiered, decades ago. Even shows like Full House and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air remain extremely popular, almost twenty years after they went off the air. Sure, many shows have replaced them in reruns, but these shows always find their way back. Some shows stand the test of time, and some do not. I'm not knocking any specific series, but something like Charles In Charge or Punky Brewster will almost immediately flop on TV Land, yet The Cosby Show is always there to save the day as a replacement.
Thousands of TV shows have come and gone since the 1950's. Some were popular, and died out over the years. Others remain timeless, watchable and fresh, year after year.
And realistically, the last 'new' blockbuster hit in syndication was The Big Bang Theory. Before that? It was probably Friends.
Buffyboy323 11-06-2013, 02:34 PM it aired on tv one until recently
They were airing Gimme A Break! on weekends during the Summer. I only saw a few of the later episodes, and was waiting for them to start from the beginning. I guess that ship has sailed.
I wish they brought it back, at least to weekday mornings.
Samme 11-06-2013, 05:32 PM Except for Newhart and the Drew Carey Show , these were terrible shows that don't deserve to live on in syndication. Murphy Brown was so topical it couldn't have been expected to be rerun for long. In general, syndication just weeds out the lousy shows. The best usually stay on and the good shows eventually get shown again, or at least are fondly remembered.

Just because a show is in syndication doesn't meant it's the "best". Being the "best" of anything is always open for debate.

In the Summer
On a Friday Night
On a Saturday Afternoon
Now how would any new show gain viewers in the summer in a time slot like that? lol

that's right; it was on NICK AT NITE. I forgot about that. I think it was in 2003; and before that it was on Lifetime also for a short time.
Dr. Jazz 11-07-2013, 04:55 AM Lot of the shows mentioned in this thread would be good ideas for the 4 decade-themed classic TV channels that are supposed to launch next year. If that project comes to fruition, I'd bet we would see some of them turn up on those channels since Garth Ancier mentioned in interviews that he wanted to include shows that haven't been seen in syndication in a while.

The chief problem w/ prime time soaps in reruns is that they're very serialized in nature (meaning, that episodes can't be aired at random because it would be harder to follow the storyline otherwise).
McGillicuddy 11-07-2013, 05:06 PM Some of the lesser known Night time soaps have been on SoapNet. The Colbys was on there, but I don't think Dynasty was. And Dallas never was.

I liked it when I was a little kid too but I watched a couple of episodes on youtube and was annoyed. Joey saying "WHOA" all the time and the other brother Anthony talking about being "a former drug addict" every episode was cringe worthy and annoying to me. The show was also too serious. It seemed like after the first season every episode was serious. From Blossom being abused by her boyfriend and Anthony "relapsing"! And if your main comic relief is Joey Lawrence, thing's can't be too good on your show!

Actually, Soapnet aired Dallas for several years, beginning in 2003 until they finally lost the rights in 2008. It went through several cycles of the full 14 seasons. By the last year or so it was usually only on on in the middle of the night, but it was better than nothing.
I'm just glad it's all out on DVD now.

I know Silver Spoons had the 5pm (or 5:30)spot on WWOR in the fall of 1989 which is now the sister station to WNYW. It was Silver Spoons and the New Leave it to Beaver. I used to have WWOR on my cable feed in Florida when I lived there. Then that stupid syndex law was passed and enforced so Silver Spoons was replaced with some generic show on my WWOR feed but when I'd call my grandmother here in New York and ask her to turn to WWOR, I could hear a different show playing. I was frustrated with that as a 12 year old.

Then that stupid syndex law was passed and enforced so Silver Spoons was replaced with some generic show on my WWOR feed but when I'd call my grandmother here in New York and ask her to turn to WWOR, I could hear a different show playing. I was frustrated with that as a 12 year old.
You remember all that from 1989? LOL
Furienna 11-08-2013, 08:22 PM Well, he was twelve years old. I remember a lot from 1989 too, and I was only five!

Well I was 14 but I don't remember what time something came on. I don't even remember what time Three's Company came on Nick@nite in 2002 LOL
All I know is it came on in 2002

I can remember a lot from1989
The only show's you listed I would still watch would be Hogan Family, Head Of The Class, and maybe some of Silver Spoons. Not saying their all bad though some are(Small Wonder, My Two Dads, Blossom, Charles In Charge)!
I wouldn't be that surprised that something like The Hogan Family would have trouble in reruns considering that they are the Valerie Harper years and the Sandy Duncan years. What I mean to say is that shows that have a very strong or severe narrative break (sort of like w/ 8 Simple Rules..., when John Ritter suddenly died), especially when it's still relatively early in its run, might confuse or even upset some viewers.
Long running shows that bombed in syndication (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=207874)
Semi-popular/cult TV shows that don't make it to syndication (http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php?t-146932.html)
Sitcoms that did good in their original run, but bad in syndication? (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-125141.html)
And, shows which were REALLY POPULAR during their network run... (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-275538.html)

Yeah I would get that too I just didn't know why it happened in 1990 my home had Warner cable I was living in Bakersfield at the time but we'd get stations from Los Angeles too and at certain hours right when I think I'd be watching something like Charles In Charge the station would interrupt it with some sort of informercial.
Well back on topic another show I've never seen in syndication is Herman's Head, it ran on FOX for three seasons from '91-'94 so I don't know if the limited number of episodes didn't entice stations to carry it.
littletydramon 08-03-2014, 03:44 AM Disney Channel aired dinosaurs in the late 90s after that I don't know, and Nick at Nite had those marathons in the early 2000s of silver spoons but they were just a few episodes.
bh7812 08-04-2014, 11:29 PM I don't remember Dinosaurs ever being in reruns!
Other shows that have disappeared:
Punky Brewster
Silver Spoons
Small Wonder
I'm not sure I would watch these if they were in syndication today. But these were fairly popular shows in their day, mainly Silver Spoons. I heard it used to come on my local WNYW at 5:00pm during the very early '90s. These shows are stuck in that time period and haven't been popular since.
At least as far as local Chicago TV goes, many of the shows mentioned have not been seen locally in many many years now. Not even Me Too has shown any if them which surprises me quite a bit. Punky Brewster used to air locally on either WFLD or WPWR. It's been so long I honestly can't remember which one. Silver Spoons aired on WPWR for many years in the afternoons and on weekends. Small Wonder aired originally on WFLD here and I'm almost positive it didn't air anywhere here in syndication after it's initial run. I could be wrong.
WPWR was the syndication home for a vast majority of 80's and 90's sitcoms. They were a good home for them. Believe me, all those shows got plenty of airtime and exposure. If Me Too would start airing them that'd be great :)
Head Of the Class was a WPWR staple too and hasn't been seen here locally since the mid 90's. I'm hoping the next year will finally see it released physically, digitally or both. I'll take it any way Warner will release it.
Newhart used to air locally on WCIU, but that was almost 20 years ago and hadn't been seen on any of our stations since then. Bob, and George and Leo haven't been shown at all here from what I remember.
irehtman 08-12-2014, 07:45 AM Hang Time is another example and it should return to TV anytime.
SitcomsOffline 08-17-2014, 09:42 PM *Night Court is one I haven't seen in a long time. I think it last aired on TV Land several years ago...
*Wings. I think it was on Nick-at-Nite briefly roughly 10 years ago, around the same time Murphy Brown aired.
*Taxi. I've never seen this one in syndication.
*WKRP in Cincinnati. The last I've seen this one was back in 2009 on WGN.
*Malcolm & Eddie. It briefly aired on Centric a year or two ago, but that was the only time I've seen it in syndication.
*The Hogan Family. I've never seen this one in syndication. I remember hearing it aired on Fox Family/ABC Family several years ago, but that was it.
*Perfect Strangers. I've never seen this one in syndication.
*In The House. I vaguely remember it airing for a short time when the TV One channel first launched, but that was it.
BTW, I'm in Detroit, just to give you an idea of the media market...

Night Court currently airs on Encore Classic.
Perfect Strangers has been in syndication before. I think most recently it was on ION very briefly.
DSfan 08-19-2014, 02:51 AM Taxi was also on Nick at Nite maybe in 1998 around. Also aired on WPIX in New York for a while. And TNN I'm 99% sure when they had A Different World (maybe this was 2001)
