Three's Company is an American sitcom that aired from 1977 to 1984 on ABC. It is a remake of the British sitcom Man About the House. The story revolves around three roommates, Janet Wood, Chrissy Snow (later Cindy Snow and Terri Alden), and Jack Tripper who share Apartment 201 in a Santa Monica apartment building owned by Mr. and Mrs. Roper (later owned by Bart Furley but managed by his brother, Ralph Furley). The show chronicles the escapades of the trio's constant misunderstandings, social lives, and struggle to keep up with rent.
Mr. Television 10-05-2013, 01:49 PM Never. I think the loss of Chrissy and the Ropers actually kept the show fresh. It started to wear down a little in season 8 but not enough to JTS. Maybe the last show could have been done better...more about the cast and less about TAC.
Retro4Life 10-05-2013, 02:11 PM I think this is a rare example of a show that could have had an obvious 'bone' moment with Chrissy leaving, but managed to bounce back with good substitute characters. I liked the show in the early years the best, but honestly, it was still funny to the end (though I agree, Sonny, the last year seemed to see a dip in quality but it was trying to wrap things up by that point, too).
Skywalker 10-05-2013, 02:59 PM Never jumped. The show actually got better for the most part when the Ropers left because although they were better characters than the one who replaced them, John Ritter was allowed to show off his physical comedy skills a lot more after they left for some reason and that was a good thing.
Does anybody else agree w/ the argument that Three's Company actually got a "second wind" so to speak (http://www.radiodiscussions.com/showthread.php?648888-Shows-That-Overstayed-Their-Welcome&p=5878588&viewfull=1#post5878588) when Priscilla Barnes (Terri) came on board? Otherwise, Three's Company (w/ the cute but otherwise very "green" Jenilee Harrison as Cindy Snow) probably wouldn't have lasted three more years.
JackJanetChrissy 07-24-2014, 10:02 AM TMC--I agree with you. Jennilee Harrison was okay but her lack of experience showed. Priscilla Barnes entering really seemed to signal a different era.
However, while the last 3-4 seasons had really funny moments, there is just something about the original trio that can't be beat (for me). They felt more like "family," if that makes sense. I don't think quality necessarily JTS after Harrison and Barnes came on board, but that certain undefinable *something* was gone.
Dianne3 07-24-2014, 06:05 PM TC did jump not long after Jack opened his restaurant in Season 7.
TC then started repeating episodes and the misunderstanding episodes didn't work anymore in 1982.
TC was a top 10 show for most of its run but the ratings dropped big time for their final season.

I think that with that being said, when Suzanne Somers was there, it really lived up to the "Three" in the title as to how they divided up the storylines. But once Chrissy was gone, it more or less became the Jack & Janet show, with Terri basically just there to fill out the third slot. She (especially after her first season) literally became no more important than Larry or Furley; it really was only about Jack and Janet. This isn't necessarily putting the blame squarely on Priscilla Barnes but I think what happened was that they didn't want Terri to be a dumb blonde like Chrissy or Cindy but also didn't want to make her too much like Janet.

And we shouldn't put too much blame on Jennilee Harrison anyway. She was clearly put in a very tense and difficult situation when she joined the show and was pretty much a "stop gap measure" (or a place holder) until Priscilla Barnes showed up.
Superswiper 07-21-2018, 09:28 AM Despite some changes here and there, I thought the quality of the show was pretty consistent through its whole run. Plus, I actually prefer Terri to Chrissy (and Cindy), and Mr. Furley to the Ropers, so there's that.

No question Terri injected new life into the show. The last 4 years had the best episodes of TC! The Chrissy years were my least favorite. Chrissy's dumb blonde act got old FAST!
The more interesting and intelligent Terri was a MUCH better fit for the blonde roommate. Not only did TC never bone but they should've somehow given us a 9th season!
Superswiper 01-03-2019, 04:25 AM Yeah, I actually prefer the later seasons too, which is not something you can say for a lot of shows.

Not only with the elimination of Chrissy and addition of Terri but they left the apartment more and had more scenes outside the apartment to give us more chances at seeing different surroundings.
Chocolate Moose 01-08-2019, 03:08 PM How can you say, Boned from Day 1? That doesn't even make sense.

People who didn't even like the show to begin with? They do exist, you know. With something as subjective as comedy, it's bound to happen.
Chocolate Moose 01-08-2019, 03:57 PM that's fine, but it's not Boning the Fish
SitcomsHeydayfan 01-08-2019, 05:08 PM How can anyone say it got worse when Chrissy left?? The show got BETTER after she left! Her dumb blonde act was getting very stale. Cindy and Terri were 2 injections of new LIFE the show badly needed!
Even Suzanne Somers said looking back at the show it was probably time for a change!
