View Full Version : Mayberry RFD Boned the Fish When...

Mayberry R.F.D. (R.F.D stands for "Rural Free Delivery" an allusion to the "out of the way" location and lifestyle the program represented) is a spin-off and direct continuation of The Andy Griffith Show under a new title, for the same sponsor, General Foods. When Andy Griffith decided to leave his series, most of the supporting characters returned for the new program, which ran for three seasons (78 color episodes) on the CBS Television Network from 1968-1971. During the final season of The Andy Griffith Show, widower farmer Sam Jones (Ken Berry) and his young son Mike (Buddy Foster) are introduced; the two then become the focus of the sequel series. Sheriff Andy Taylor and newlywed wife Helen make guest appearances until late 1969, and are then written out. The show's first episode had the highest ratings in recorded television history (1968), and the series was popular throughout its entire run. It was canceled in CBS's infamous "rural purge" of 1971.
LittleRickyII 09-26-2013, 12:22 AM I don't get the second option: When Andy And Barney Left. Andy only made two guest appearances, and Barney was never on this show. So there's really no difference between Option 1 and Option 2.

Maybe the confusion if you want to call it that stems from the notion that Mayberry RFD is just The Andy Griffith Show under a different name.
Marvo301 09-26-2013, 01:51 PM When Andy decided to walk away that should have been the end of this show. Carrying on under a new title and with a few new characters was doomed to pale in comparison to the "Andy" episodes!

Andy was on more than 2 times. He was a frequent guest during season one and Barney was in the first show.
Mr. Television 09-26-2013, 06:22 PM As for when it JTS, it never did. It was never as good as the original AGS but was a pleasant enough show that fit in well with the other rural shows at that time.
Mr. Television 09-26-2013, 06:26 PM One thing that I do find funny is how RFD was ignored on the Return to Mayberry reunion. Andy & Helen did have another son Andy, Jr. and he was ignored in that movie. lol
comedyfreak 09-27-2013, 11:08 AM IMO RFD was always good it's name meant for the citizens in Mayberry which is what the show was built around. Seen an excellent interview with Ken Berry he clarifies things and talks about his career, really interesting.
McGillicuddy 06-28-2014, 06:44 PM Why isn't "when Aunt Bee left", not an choice? That's when I think RFD boned the shark!

True, one option might have been "When Aunt Bea left".

It did fare a lot better than AfterMASH but it was the same problem.

As we are trying to understand and/or explain in another, current, thread.
There was an Andy Jr. and is strange how the writers and actors will just ignore something like that, leaving the dedicated viewers just hanging.

Okay, I forgot, why do fans insist on calling her "Aunt Bee" rather than the more natural (to me) Aunt Bea?
Short for Beatrice, of course.
:)

Ron Howard keeps losing his TV brothers. Same thing happened on Happy Days with Chuck.

There are a few episodes of The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show where actress Bea Benaderet's name is misspelled as "Bee" in the credits.

Yes, and now I find out there were not two, but three different Joanies on Happy Days.
:)

What three Joanies? Susan Neher portrayed her on the Love, American Style episode pilot and Erin Moran played her on Happy Days and Joanie Loves Chachi.
You may be confusing Howard's niece K.C. Cunningham portrayed by future Wings co-star Crystal Bernard, who replaced Joanie while Erin Moran was starring in Joanie Loves Chachi for a year.
On the other hand, there were three Chucks: Ric Carrott on the Love, American Style segment, Gavan O'Herlihy in the first season of Happy Days and Randolph Roberts in a single appearance in the second season Christmas episode.

Apparently there was a pilot episode shot in which Joanie was played by actress Louise Foley.

I've heard of 3 Three's Company pilots, 3 All in the Family pilots, 2 Barney Miller pilots, 2 different versions of the Hogan's Heroes pilot, a short presentation of Family Guy and of The Munsters plus two versions of The Munsters full-length pilot, but up to now I've never heard of another Happy Days pilot.
