View Full Version : Miley Cyrus Gets Social Media and Digital Boost from Controversial VMAs Performance
JamesG 08-27-2013, 12:53 PM Miley Cyrus Sees Social Media and Digital Sales Benefits from MTV VMAs Performance

by Keith Caulfield, Billboard
Miley Cyrus is reaping the benefits of her buzzed-about performance on the MTV Video Music Awards on Aug. 25 -- both in sales and social metrics.
During the VMAs telecast, Cyrus performed her Billboard Hot 100 top 10 single 'We Can't Stop', then participated in a medley of Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' and 'Give It 2 U' (with 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar).
Her performance came a little more than 24 hours after her forthcoming album, 'Bangerz', became available for pre-order on iTunes. At press time, the set ranked at No. 5 on the digital retailer's top sellers tally.
'Bangerz' is set for release on Oct. 8 through RCA Records.
Industry sources say that Cyrus' 'We Can't Stop' will likely see a slight dip in download sales for the week ending Aug. 25 but will perk up the following week. (In the week ending Aug. 18, it sold 148,000 downloads, according to Nielsen SoundScan.) The song may generate a gain of 10 to 20 percent in the frame that ends Sept. 1.
Because the single itself is fairly old (it premiered in June), there is more focus on Cyrus' new song, 'Wrecking Ball'. The cut premiered on iTunes late Saturday night as part of the 'Bangerz' pre-order and is off to a robust sales start. Sources suggest that it moved between 80,000 and 90,000 copies in less than two full days on sale.
Thus, Cyrus will likely end up with two songs in the Top 20 on this week's Digital Songs chart, which will be released on Aug. 28 and reflects the sales week that ended Aug. 25.
The full sales impact of the show will not be felt until next week, after a complete week of post-VMA sales (for the week ending Sept. 1).
According to Twitter, the 'We Can't Stop' and 'Blurred Lines' medley garnered 306,100 tweets per minute during the East Coast airing of the show. To compare, last year's VMAs had a peak of 98,307 tweets per minute, whereas presidential election night in 2012 saw a tweets-per-minute peak of 327,452.
The conclusion of Justin Timberlake's performance on the show was the second-most-tweeted moment of the VMAs: 219,800 tweets per minute.
According to Next Big Sound, Cyrus earned 50,000 new Facebook page likes on Sunday -- up tremendously from the 30,000 she tallied on Saturday. Comparably, Timberlake's Facebook logged 122,000 new page likes on Sunday -- close to five times the number of likes he earned on Saturday.
The two-and-a-half-hour VMAs telecast averaged 10.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen -- a 66 percent gain from last year's draw of 6.1 million. The most-watched VMAs telecast remains 2011's installment, which delivered 12.4 million viewers.

Mr. Drucker 08-27-2013, 01:08 PM Always impressive how many like Cyrus have employed their show business talents into nearly diabolical efforts to manipulate at least the American media in accordance with their public relations agendas.I say "near diabolical" because just think what the end results of many of these campaigns have been.Mind control.Their simple taking advantage of some people's tendencies towards vicarious existences through people so celebrated in our society they're perceived as deities here to provide some sort of path to glory and enlightenment.Cyrus has officially proven great success in this endeavor just as Britney Spears and Madonna before her.All hail the new queen of music industry hoopla!!

cleverfun3000 08-27-2013, 03:50 PM This boost in her record sales is not surprising. SEX SELLS. Even simulated sex sells. Expect to see more of the former Disney Moppets perform raunchy, but rewarding acts of faux-fornication in their stage acts.
Janice 08-27-2013, 07:27 PM She's nasty. I feel like I need a shower after watching just a few minutes of that. That white tongue, ugh. If she's going to do that, at least have a pink tongue.
JO Sweet Heart 08-27-2013, 09:07 PM To me, she is growing down instead of up.
God bless you always!!!

UMFaninMD 08-27-2013, 10:22 PM If she thinks that performance was sexy, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell her.
retrofan05 08-28-2013, 12:56 PM Can we really call that a performance? Anyone out of a sleazy nightclub could have pulled that off. What happened to choreography? She could take a few lessons from Justin Timberlake; his performance, great as usual.
Jaqui-Michel 08-28-2013, 04:44 PM Her performance wasn't offensive, it was downright sad. The fact that she and and her handlers think she's sexy is what's offensive. She looked ridiculous. Sticking out one's tongue and molesting yourself is not an attractive look for her. Girl, have a seat and rethink your career path.
UMFaninMD 08-28-2013, 07:06 PM Reportedly, the rehearsal was not as raunchy and over-the-top as the finished result, which from what I've heard is pretty common at the VMA's. She knew what she was doing, the girl is an attention seeker and wants so badly to be treated as an adult and to put her Hannah Montana past behind her.

ABlairican Pie 08-30-2013, 06:32 PM Don't you miss the days when rock and roll music shook up the world than all these little pop tarts?
catlover79 09-02-2013, 10:34 AM All I know is - I will never see a foam finger at a sporting event again the same way.

Oh, I totally agree. Heck, Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are in their late 50s/early 60s and STILL rock. Same goes for Carole King, who is in her 70s. Linda Ronstadt probably could, too, had she not lost her voice. :(
JamesG 09-03-2013, 04:34 PM Miley Cyrus Responds to VMAs Backlash
Sep 3, 2013
by Sadie Gennis
Miley Cyrus has broken her silence about her controversial Video Music Awards performance, in which she asserted her adulthood by motor-boating a backup dancer's butt, simulating sex with a foam finger and twerking on Robin Thicke.
"I don't pay attention to the negative," Cyrus told MTV, adding that she isn't the first to cause scandal on the VMAs stage.
"Madonna's done it. Britney's [Spears] done it. Anyone that performs, that's what you're looking for. You're wanting to make history. Me and Robin, the whole time were like, 'We're about to make history right now.'"
As for the fact that people can't seem to stop discussing her performance, which has inspired divisive cultural critiques about race and gender, Cyrus insists:
"They're overthinking it. You're thinking about it more than I thought about it when I did it, because that's just me."

JamesG 09-13-2013, 04:31 PM Robin Thicke Breaks Silence on VMAs: "The Whole Point Was to Provoke" (Video)
9/13/2013
by Hilary Lewis
Robin Thicke has finally spoken out about his controversial performance with Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards, saying that they fully intended to give people something to talk about.
"We knew what we were getting ourselves into. We're entertainers, and the VMAs is the perfect place for a little shock and awe," he tells Star in a video interview.
"Yeah, we kind of knew when we were in rehearsal. … We were like, 'OK, if you touch me with your foam finger all over my crotch, obviously a few people are going to have something to say about this.' But that was the whole point. I mean, the whole point was to excite and provoke and entertain."
Cyrus previously said she was out to make history with her grinding- and twerk-filled performance. And even though she stripped down to a flesh-colored two-piece, danced around suggestively with a foam finger and repeatedly bent over and shook her rear end, including once standing directly in front of Thicke, her performance wasn't sexual, he says.
"I thought it was silly and funny. She was being humorous and naughty. But it wasn't sexually charged at all," he said. "That's who she is and that's how she likes to dance. And she was just being herself and I was just being myself."
But the 'Blurred Lines' singer, no stranger to controversy, can understand why some people might have been offended by the performance. As for his wife, actress Paula Patton, Thicke says she "loved it".

JamesG 09-14-2013, 08:12 PM FCC Releases Miley Cyrus VMA Complaints
by THE DEADLINE TEAM
Saturday September 14, 2013
Miley Cyrus and her headline-grabbing twerk routine helped the MTV VMAs reach 10.1M viewers on August 25. It also prompted 150 irate official complaint filings over at the FCC, according to documents received by The Smoking Gun.
Some compare it to the Janet Jackson Super Bowl Nipple-gate of 2004 which coincidentally went down in an MTV-produced halftime show for CBS and led to a $550,000 fine (which was eventually overturned).
Many of the FCC complaints term Cyrus’s grinding on singer Robin Thicke as “obscene” and “indecent” with one saying “had I wanted my family to see a hooker perform a live sex show, I would have taken them to Tijuana.”
Others call for FCC fines to MTV, Cyrus, and even Thicke for being the guy who got twerked on. Unfortunately for outraged tsk-tskers, Cyrus’s MTV stunt was broadcast on the cable network – so the FCC can’t touch it.
The complaints can be viewed here: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/file/miley-cyrus-fcc-letters

JamesG 09-18-2013, 09:12 PM Paula Patton on Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus' Performance at VMAs
Sept. 18, 2013
by Natalie Abrams
Paula Patton has finally gone on record about her husband Robin Thicke's raunchy performance with Miley Cyrus at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Even though Cyrus twerked on Thicke and even kissed his neck, Patton says she wasn't surprised. "Honestly, they rehearsed for three days beforehand, and I don't know how not to dance with someone having their booty in you... all my friends do it like that," Patton said during Tuesday's "Watch What Happens: Live", according to US Weekly.
"And I don't really know what the big deal is."
Patton admitted she was surprised by the harsh reaction fans and critics had to the performance. "I didn't know if they thought Miley was going to sit down and play piano like Alicia Keys. Her song's about taking molly!" she said, referring to the nickname for a pure form of ecstasy.
On Wednesday morning, Patton then appeared on "Today", and decided to demonstrate that dancing like that really isn't a big deal. To prove her point, she twerked with Al Roker.
"Your wife's not going to get mad at you, is she?"

JamesG 09-20-2013, 05:27 PM Billy Ray Cyrus on Miley's VMA Performance: "She's Evolving as an Artist" (Video)
9/20/2013
by Hilary Lewis
Miley Cyrus' dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, is finally weighing in on his daughter's racy performance at last month's MTV Video Music Awards.
Although she grinded up against Robin Thicke and danced around suggestively with a foam finger, the elder Cyrus told CNN's Piers Morgan that he isn't bothered by his daughter's antics, which he merely sees as part of her reinventing herself as an artist.
"She's just Miley," Cyrus said on Thursday's "Piers Morgan Live".
"She's an artist. She's real. I think that what's happened over the years, Miley has been reinventing her sound. She's evolving as an artist herself. I think that all of what everyone is calling controversy now, that's still my Miley."
As for whether he knew what she had planned for her now-legendary performance, Cyrus would only say:
"I knew that she wanted to do something really special and something everyone was going to be talking about. I knew that she had put in a great deal of practice and thought into what was going to happen in New York."

JO Sweet Heart 09-21-2013, 02:49 PM ^^^ All that I can say is that the more that he continues to support the direction that his daughter is going in, the more respect that he is going to end up losing for his own self when all is said and done.
God bless you always!!! :) :) :)

JamesG 10-07-2013, 03:37 PM Miley Cyrus on VMAs: "It's a Month Later and We're Still Talking About It" (Video)
10/7/2013
by Hilary Lewis
Miley Cyrus sat down for an interview with host Matt Lauer in which he asked her about the recent controversies, including the VMA performance.
Cyrus said her plan to deliver a VMA performance that people were talking about worked because "it's a month later and we're still talking about it."
But she said she didn't plan to offend people by it.
"I don't ever really plan to offend people, but sometimes it just happens, because I think people aren't open to things they don't understand," she explained.
Asked if she was bothered by all the attention she was getting, Cyrus stated, "Not really. It's kind of what I want, because I'm an artist. I'm hoping I'm getting a little attention or my record sales might be in trouble."
But she said she's not bothered by what people think of her onstage antics because she knows she's a good person by what she does offstage.

And there you have it. Which is sad because after listening to Wrecking Ball a few times it is a pretty good song with decent lyrics and she doesn't do a bad job singing on it. It's just a shame she had to ruin it with a cheesy raunchy video and all these silly antics. However, it does speak for the bulk of today's music buyers when they won't support an artist unless they act stupid.
JO Sweet Heart 10-08-2013, 04:39 PM ^^^ Amen to that and the sad thing is that when the album does well, that can give the singer the impression that their acting stupid is the reason why it did so well which will only motivate them into being even more stupid. :( :( :(
God bless you always!!! :) :) :)
