JamesG 08-02-2013, 01:59 PM Ellen DeGeneres to Host the Oscars
Aug 2, 2013
by Sadie Gennis
Ellen DeGeneres will host the Oscars for a second time next year, the Academy announced Friday.
"We are thrilled to have Ellen DeGeneres host the Oscars," producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said in a statement.
"As a longtime friend, we had always hoped to find a project for us to do together and nothing could be more exciting than teaming up to do the Oscars. There are few stars today who have Ellen's gift for comedy, with her great warmth and humanity. She is beloved everywhere and we expect that the audience at the Dolby Theatre, and in homes around the globe, will be as excited by this news as we are."
"I am so excited to be hosting the Oscars for the second time. You know what they say - the third time's the charm," said DeGeneres.
The 86th Academy Awards will be broadcast live Sunday, March 2 on ABC.

JamesG 01-30-2014, 05:12 PM Oscar Nominee for Best Original Song Is Disqualified
Jan 30, 2014
by Liz Raftery
The Academy has rescinded the Best Original Song Oscar nomination for 'Alone Yet Not Alone', from the movie of the same name.
The disqualification comes after Bruce Broughton, who wrote the music, was found to have violated the Academy's rule to campaign in a "fair and ethical manner."
Broughton, who is a Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed other members of the branch during the nominations voting period to let them know that his song was nominated, according to the Academy.
"No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one's position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one's own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage," said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs.
The Academy will not name another nominee to replace 'Alone Yet Not Alone'.

JamesG 02-27-2014, 06:07 PM The Oscars To Stream Online for the First Time
by Ariana Bacle
Feb 27, 2014
TV isn’t the only place you’ll be able to watch the Oscars come Sunday: In a first-time move, ABC will stream the entire Oscars pre-show and awards show on their app, Watch ABC.
Those with compatible TV subscriptions, like Comcast and AT&T U-Verse, will have access to the streaming services both online and on their phones or tablets.
In addition to being able to watch the event live the whole night — from the pre-show to Jimmy Kimmel’s post-Oscars live show — viewers will also be able to re-watch everything Oscars on the Watch ABC app until March 5.

Zoneboy 03-03-2014, 03:46 AM She's a good fit, she should host with Billy Crystal.
She's the reason I didn't watch it. The only thing that was of any interest to me was the in memoriam segment which I'll have to watch later after I fast-forward to it.

What do you have against her? She was way better than Seth MacFarlane.
JamesG 03-03-2014, 04:53 PM TV Ratings: Oscars Rise to 43 Million Viewers, Most-Watched in 10 Years
3/3/14
by Michael O'Connell
ABC's annual airing of the Oscar telecast dominated Sunday night. Final ratings for the Ellen DeGeneres-hosted show have the Academy Awards more than 2.5 million viewers ahead of last year and even in the key demographic.
All told, ABC's coverage of the Academy Awards averaged 43 million viewers and 12.9 rating among adults 18-49. That's a 6 percent boost in viewers and a virtual tie with last year's adults-under-50 score.
DeGeneres brought lifts among younger viewers and men -- with ratings among adults 18-34 and men both at their highest since 2007.
Last year's final returns for the Oscars gave the three-hour-and-ten-minute telecast 40.4 million viewers and a 13 rating among adults 18-49. It's the biggest event on the ABC calendar, outranking all other televised awards shows.
The network, which lacks any marquee sporting events, reached a deal with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2011 to keep the Oscars on ABC through at least 2020.
The Oscars have been reasonably steady in recent years after the ratings nosedive in 2008 -- those averaged 32 million viewers and a 10.7 in the demo -- fluctuating between 1 or 2 million north or south of the 40-million-viewer mark.
The last time DeGeneres hosted the Oscars, in 2007, the show averaged 40.2 million viewers and a 14.1 rating with adults 18-49. The telecast hasn't topped that demo score since.
Most broadcast networks opted not to bother airing any original programming against the kudos -- though CBS did air a new episode of "The Amazing Race" (1.5 adults), even with last week's premiere.

comedyfreak 03-03-2014, 05:53 PM I really enjoyed this years show.
MrCleveland 03-03-2014, 05:54 PM ^That may be good news for ABC.
"12 Years" only won 3 Oscars including Best Pic?! I wonder if there were other films that won only a few Oscars including Best Pic, but the film that got more awards didn't get Best Pic?
All I can think of is "Grand Hotel" which only won an Oscar for Best Pic.
Vahan 03-05-2014, 01:36 AM She's the reason I didn't watch it. The only thing that was of any interest to me was the in memoriam segment which I'll have to watch later after I fast-forward to it.
So Charles, care to explain what you have against Ellen? And what about the Memoriam segment?
Zoneboy 03-05-2014, 10:06 AM So Charles, care to explain what you have against Ellen? And what about the Memoriam segment?
Since when do I owe you or anyone else an explanation? There are plenty of people in the entertainment industry I don't care for and it's usually because of lack of talent. Ellen is about as boring as watching tennis. I've never been a fan of hers, I tried watching her sitcoms and to me she just isn't funny. The segment was much better than previous years. They didn't include Ed Lauter or Jonathan Winters but someone noteworthy is always left out. I'm not much of a movie fan because they don't hold my interest and the Oscars I care nothing about so there's no way I'm going to sit through a boring host and everything else just to wait for the one segment that I want to see. I did watch a few minutes of Ellen on youtube and the pizza delivery was really dumb and the Twitter selfie was worse.
Vahan 03-05-2014, 10:37 AM I didn't see you say anything for a few days. That's why I asked.

I didn't realize there was a time limit on replying to posts.
Vahan 03-05-2014, 11:27 AM One other thing: They actually mentioned the stars they left out here:

ohmrwilson 03-05-2014, 11:29 AM While I don't disagree with any of the acting awards (this year there were so many great performances), I never understand-
did the best picture direct itself?
and if the best director won, why not for the best picture?
Seems so weirdly disconnected, but that's the movies.
Maybe they want to reward as many different.
If it were me, I would raise the nominations to 10 in each acting category,
and I would add, best adapted from prior song, and a few more music awards.
(and they should have replaced the one nomination music song that was tossed.)
It was a crime that Redford didn't get nominated (and if he was nominated, he might have won), and same a few years ago with Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino.
^That may be good news for ABC.

Rocky had 10 nominations and won 3 including best picture. Also the other 2 oscars 12 Years won were for writing and acting, IMO those are more important catagories than all of the technical ones that Gravity won.
irehtman 03-06-2014, 09:28 AM Gravity won the most awards: 7.

That's no substitute, if I wanted to go to a website to see the names being honored I wouldn't have bothered watching it on TV.
Janice 03-06-2014, 11:28 AM Ont of the best moments of the evening for me was when Matthew McConaughey won the Best Actor Oscar for The Dallas Buyer's Club.
