Well I wasn't born in England but I had grown up with an English twinge in my voice, thankfully I've lost it because people made fun of me for it, so now I just talk like a regular Yankee.

Sometimes after I get back from New York, I'll start tawlkin' like a New Yorka.., sorta like I'm doin' right now...

And when I get back from Bwoston, I'll always lose my "r"... as in "Can I have some watah?"

But, I'm basically a regular Yankee

Believe it or not, yes we midwesterners do have an accent. We get all nasaly and maaaake ouuur Aaaaas go oaan and oaan.

Also, we're right next to the Canadian border, and some of my friends have the thickest Canadian accent - something like a cross between California and English. "I'm going oot to the drugstoor, where I'm gonna 'ave a beer'. Dat's wut I'm takin' aboot."

Yes, they DO say "aboot".

I can tease them if I want to, my best friend's Canadian - we laugh at each others' accents all the time.

Yes, there is definitely a Chicago accent! It sounds a lot like a Wisconsin accent! It is subtle but there! And yes people in Colorado have a twang. I have relatives in both locations and we rib them about their accents!

My accent is NOTHING! HA! When I go down the street in Queens I hear them talkin, and I copy it. Go into Brooklyn, then end up doing the same...every borrough is different.

Try Staten Island sometime! WHOOO DOGGY! lol

Actually, when I was younger, I had an Australian/Canadian accent and had to go to a speach therapist to get rid of it. And yesh I said "aboat". It's more "aboat" than "aboot" where my relatives come from. Instead of saying "I" it was "oy"...ugh, it was odd. Now if I slip I laugh...but I'm the only one who notices cuz I can do so many accents now that I'm older!

The main accent down here is a Mexican accent. I guess that is because I am so close to the Mexican border.

As for me, I really don't have an accent (ask Karli, she said I do not sound like I'm from Texas :) )

I can turn my accent on or off whenever I want to. I've learned to control it :) That comes from living all over the place.

Nearly everyone round here is a Scot so they all have west of Scotland accents. When I was at school there were a couple of English people but not a lot. There was one girl from Liverpool and we all used to take the p#ss out of her accent all the time! There was another girl from Newcastle but noone dared laugh at her!
I've been told that I have quite a strong accent but I don't notice it myself. I don't actually like the west of Scotland accent - I don't find it attractive at all!

I have a Southern accent. Of course it doesn't really stand out until I go to Florida or up North. It also stands out when people on IM don't understand what I'm saying. Ok, so I guess I can try to give you an idea of how true Southerners speak:

Instead of think I say reckon.

Instead of about I say fixxen.

Instead of going in the car to school, I go on the car.

Instead of being taught, we're learned.

Instead of aren't any, it's ain't.

Instead of people, it's folks.

Instead of hey, it's howdy ma'am.

There are a lot more. I'm constantly made fun of by my cousins, who live in Florida, because of my accent. Of course, they sound funny to me:lol:

In Northern California, we have no distinguisable accent to speak of. California in general, and I'm basing this on surburban areas, does, however, has a different dialect.
We DO say "like" a lot. It's almost inaudible amoung young people. It's like a comma within our speech.
Yes, some of us use "Dude" to start of a sentence, and we do, unfortunetly, say "hecka" and "hella". I try to avoid using those two.

Really? I never thought Coloradans had a twang. I don't think us Denverites have much of that "cowboy accent" Where do your relatives live? This is all very interesting to me because I never thought I had much of an accent.

I had a friend from Chicago who had a very subtle accent. You only noticed it when she said certain words. Another friend of mine goes to school in Minnesota and is picking up on the accent there. It is quite a bit more noticable.

I'm in the Midwest, so as was mentioned before, I don't think we have much of an accent. We do, however, pronounce certain words differently.

My mother says "wash" as "warsh", "color" as "collar". That's all I can think of.

My dad says "creek" as "crick".

I have all sorts of words that supposedly  I pronounce wrong. My boyfriend is from the East coast and he is always getting after me for pronouncing certain words wrong because he knows it really pushes my buttons when he does that! :D

I say "measure" as "maysure". With a long "a" sound. Apparently it's supposed to have a short "a" sound and be more like "me-sure"

I say "roof" as "ruf"

I know there's other words I pronounce "wrong". My bf says everyone here misprounces "orange" and "Florida". I don't know it it's wrong, but we do pronounce those 2 words very differently from East coasters.

I can verify the whole saying orange wrong and/or weird. I don't know how you pronounce it Bootsy, but my sister's roommate is from New York. The first time I met her my sister made her say the word orange and I must admit it was pretty funny. I can't even start to describe how she said it. Actually, now that I'm watching my old tapes of DW, your not Julia. Julia sounds like a Yankee.

Uh-oh...I sure hope Ms. Sugarbaker herself doesn't hear you say that!

That's one thing I love about DW---the various southern accents. They're all southern, but a couple from different regions and dialect. If it comes to "Yankeeism", I'd say the closest would be Mary Jo.

But she can't truly be a Yankee. She wann't born in them thar Northern states, she's a southern gal. ;)

Not everyone does, but you sure do hear more than your fair share! lol

I myself have a country/southern accent, but don't overdo it so much that you'd think I'm a hick. I'm just a Kentucky guy, who would be proud to be the Sugarbaker's nephew. ;)

LOL :rotflmao: LOL

I was asked this week while I was in DC why I didn't have a strong Texas accent :) So I told them that I could turn it on and off so of course they all (the group from New York) wanted to here my accent. By the end of that night I had a new nic name. They were all calling me Texas lol (I think part of it was b/c most of them were drunk and couldn't remember my name, but ya know) :)

Actually wasn't Charlene a Yankee? Hell, I should know, look who I'm obsessed with!

Charlene? She can't be, that woman drips of southernness! lol Good ol' country southernness, that is...but maybe MO is one of those border states---some could consider it midwest, some southern (I think of it as both), and maybe some would think "Yankee" country. But I don't like to think of it that way. ;)

Nothin' against you Yanks! :D

Missouri is not a southern state. No way, no how.

MO is a Yankee state. I remember in one episode Suzanne referring to Charlene as a Yankee.

I live in North Alabama where the southern drawl is as thick as the gravy on the mashed potatoes. I also have one. Even though I was born in Italy.

Okay, okay! I've only been to MO once, sorry...lol ;)

I guess I thought it could be considered a border state since it's on the same "level" on the map as KY, and KY is a border state. My best friend thinks of himself as a Yankee, and I'm a southerner. lol I did live about 20 minutes south of him growin' up, so maybe that explains it. :D

Well, Charlene is sure country then, that's one thing for sure...
