The story of Jimmy Walker who became mayor of New York in the '20s. Used by professional politicians and money-grabbers, Walker himself was "stupid but clean", although his open affair with Betty Compton cost him dear.
The film follows Walker from political obscurity to mayor during the Roaring Twenties with the help of Tammany Hall leaders.
Walker never takes his job seriously, letting gangsters take big money while he enjoys the limelight and show biz crowd.
But he redeems himself by testifying against the crooks. Lots of good songs from the 1920s and early 1930s.
