View Full Version : Anyone else dislike "Self Checkout" at Pharmacies and Supermarkets??
TVFactFan 07-13-2013, 10:52 AM Why the hell should I have to do extra work when I'm spending my money? lol
This cashier in CVS was encouraging me to use it and not realizing he was making himself uselss.
I do not like playing the role of a cashier when I go in the store to spend my money
The End
LOL
shotzette 07-13-2013, 11:46 AM I like it. I can get in and get out more quickly than when I have to make chit chat with the register monkey. The only self check out that I don't like is the one at Harris Teeter since the process is counter intuitive. Self check out also means that I can use as many plastic bags as I damn well please. Nothing is worse than having an over stuffed bag burst open in the parking lot.

You should use it b/c it's the absolute latest cool HIP thing to do, so you should totally hop board!!!
LOL
I'm totally kidding.
I agree, I hate it too, and REFUSE to use it. For one thing it puts ppl out of work.
At our Walmart they've replaced about a 4th of the cashiers counters with self-checkout, so what have they done with the 4th of the cashiers that they replaced?
I HATE these things that put ppl out of work, I WILL NOT use it, I will stand in line for an hour to get checked out by a real person before I will use one of those!
And I would just bet like most anything new they prolly are more trouble, I bet they are always messing up and and someone from management is always having to come and fix them, just like the debit card machine, honestly has that thing ever worked right on the 1st swipe? LOL
And I think it's sorta nice to make chit-chat with ppl, I think that is becoming a lost art too, human interaction.
But I'd say get ready. it will prolly just be around the corner before ALL checkout stations will be self check out, and you prolly won't get to deal with a real person in anything. It's sad.

It probably will at some point.
Waterston_Fan 07-13-2013, 12:16 PM Never thought about that it would put someone out of work but my Albertsons has it and when I'm in a rush, which I usually am, then I use it.
MikeLutton 07-13-2013, 12:25 PM I got to do my own backing at store called save a lot It sucks
Frump 07-13-2013, 12:40 PM Never thought about that it would put someone out of work but my Albertsons has it and when I'm in a rush, which I usually am, then I use it.
Well I mean what else could it do other than put ppl out of work.
I mean it's like I said at our Walmart they have replaced about a 4th of the checkout counters with them, so what has happened to that 4th of the cashiers, it will either put them out of work or drastically reduce their hours.
I know I sound 100 years old, but I'm not but I just hate this new way of thinking, everything has to be speedy, speedy, speedy, FAST!!! There is absolutly no human feeling or emotion anymore.
gidgetgrape 07-13-2013, 03:20 PM I hate it. When I finish shopping, I'm tired. I don't feel like bagging things. Usually the person in front of me doesn't know how to use the machine and I waste even more time waiting for him or her to complete their purchase.
isiahthomas 07-13-2013, 03:35 PM I'm glad supermarkets added these self checkout machines because it's good to use them instead of having to wait in a long line that has a cashier. I get outta the store quicker now because of self checkout. It sucks that some cashiers will lose their job because of it but that's life. Sometimes things happen in life that people don't like but you have to deal with it and make a change or be stuck going nowhere. I don't like the fact that Blockbuster Video stores are gone because people are getting movies online but i deal with it and i'm not too mad about it because i go to a smaller video store. If the smaller video store i go to went outta business, i would really be mad because i wouldn't know where to rent movies from because i don't like getting movies online.

Exactly!!! I agree 100%! A lot of this new technology is more trouble that it has benefits. Like now when they storm knocks out my power, it takes 10 minutes for the TV to reboot and come back on whereas used to it would come bacon on instantly.
Isn't it supposed to be making things easier for us?

This is the typical way of thinking nowdays and I SO disagree with it. Now days it's all about fast fast fast, who cares who it puts out of a job. I put PEOPLE over machines, and if it means I have to stay in the store a few more minutes in line, so ppl can have a job, I'm willing to do that, where have I ~or anyone else~ have to be that's so important that they have to get out of the store in 2 seconds flat.
I just look at it like : I have to be in the store a few extra mins and ppl keep their jobs, but it costs ppl their jobs to get me out of the store 2 mins faster, I have more compassion than that.
I mean don't get me wrong, I know ppl have important places to go, but I don't think everyone should be in that big of a rush all the time.
And as someone said it's a bigger hassle b/c basically you have to do it all yourself, bagging and everything.
It just seems like everyone nowdays is in a almighty rush to nowhere.
And as human-interaction is eliminated and ppl only deal with machines, young ppl are going to have poorer and poorer communication skills. It seems like today kids already don't know how how to talk properly to ppl, when I worked at the theater selling food, when kids would come up to give their order, they wouldn't look at you, and just MUMBLE. I think all of this is a sign of the times.

Modern technology has some advantages don't get me wrong, but overall I agree it has made many things a lot more complicated, impersonal etc. etc.It has gone waaaay to far already.

I agree with this post. In a rush to do nothing
janet42 07-13-2013, 04:38 PM It's the way the new electronic way is. You just got to get use to it. I won't be surprised if all stores in a future date will be all electronic check out or all online shopping.

TRUE!! And another thing that I find amazing is, we have all this "brilliant" hi-tech technology, computers that basically respond to thought waves, yet we still haven't found a cure for cancer, diabetes, alzeimers, bodies just falling apart for no other reason other than just b/c they get old, old ppl having to be in constant pain from nothing else other than age, or even been able to extend lives. But yet we can get ppl out of a supermarket 2 mins faster.
I think if some of the effort that's put in these silly things were put into things like THAT we'd be better off.
These are things that tick me off.
Frump 07-13-2013, 04:53 PM It's the way the new electronic way is. You just got to get use to it. I won't be surprised if all stores in a future date will be all electronic check out or all online shopping.
Sadly I don't think there will be any stores, malls shopping centers, nor anything like that in the future, and it makes me soo sad. Sometimes it's fun just to go hang out at the mall, to go browse through a store to kill some time, or sit down and have a cup of coffee, and to actually get away from the computer screen and cell phone.
It's as I've said many times someday we will live on a bare earth, where nothing exist except a mother cell phone that everyone brians are plugged into, we won't even have houses.
Frump 07-13-2013, 04:55 PM I agree with this post. In a rush to do nothing
Yep and many pp keep telling, me "Well you use a computer don't you? THAT is technology!" I think that's a bad analogy, just b/c there is obviously good technology that doesn't mean we have to just love and accept it all.
DVDLover 07-13-2013, 05:02 PM I only use it if the line is too long at other registers
gidgetgrape 07-13-2013, 05:17 PM TRUE!! It's all about money. Don't get me wrong - there are a lot of wonderful people out there who want things to get better! But, these companies would rather install a self-checkout machine than hire a real person because they don't have to pay a self-checkout machine a decent wage and benefits. And we don't have cures for diseases because it's more profitable to sell us treatments and pills.
shotzette 07-13-2013, 05:42 PM And as someone said it's a bigger hassle b/c basically you have to do it all yourself, bagging and everything.

Okay, I admit when I'm doing a huge amount of shopping (weekly groceries) I do go through the regular lines just so someone else will bag my stuff for me. However, if I ran in for just a few items--which is how it usually goes with me--its quicker and easier to use self check out for my salad greens and diet coke.
I've never had a huge amount of trouble using any self check out, minus the aforementioned Harris Teeter ones. The instructions are pretty straight forward and since I use my debit card for most of my purchases, I'm in and out in a jiffy.
The old "it takes people's jobs" argument has been around since the dawn of time. Technology will always take jobs, but it opens up new fields. When the automobile became more popular, stable owners and livery drivers became unemployed. People then became cab drivers and garage owners/mechanics. Look at all the IT jobs around; those weren't here 40 years ago. Technology is always going to shape our world, for better or worse.
Regulus 07-13-2013, 06:01 PM Every time I try to use these things some item won't scan properly and the whole system will crash. Consequently I'll have to wait 5+ minutes for an "Assistence " to come over. I swear these thing were made exclusively for (Insert name of store here) by Cone of Silence inc. :angryfire
Janice 07-13-2013, 06:21 PM Those things intimidate me. I'm sure I'd be like Lucille Ball in one of her zany moves, lol. They charge me enough for groceries; let them bag them.

That is technology at it's FINEST for ya :)
In this new spaceage if one little thing fails, asyou aid the whole system will crash, where as in the old ways all you have to do is rescan.
I have a friend who does a radio show and he said since they made him upgrade to digital it is such a headache.
When it was reel to reel if it messed up all he had to do was turn the reel back to where it messed up, and start from there, NOW if he messes up, he has to start over from scartch.
I think technology was good about they way it was in the early 2000s, passed that it's gotten just...silly.
robyrob 07-13-2013, 06:28 PM TRUE!! i remember an old MAD TV skit where some drunk guy was elected President, and one of the things he did was to give the heads of all the major corporations AIDS, Cancer, Diabetes, and who knows what other diseases - and they miraculously found cures for them all within 6 months.
i usually use the normal cashier checkouts, although I normally try to bag my own stuff because I can't stand it when those lazy kids smash all my stuff, single bag cans and other heavy items, or just mix up everything altogether.
if i'm in a really big hurry and just grabbing a few items I might use the self-checkout, but only if there is no line because I am not going to get stuck behind someone that doesn't know what they are doing.
mets82 07-13-2013, 06:36 PM I agree with Solomon and Frump on this. I do think it takes jobs away from people. Thats not right. My local CVS doesnt have self checkout and I'm glad. I don't have time to start self checkout. I don't know how to and I want to make sure I do it right and you just know somebody behind me is in a rush.
I actually thought about starting a thread about something just like this. About technology and if it really is so great. I mean I agree with Frump, who I think said that they can't cure cancer but they have self checkout. I mean can you believe there are no more video stores and newspapers are becoming extinct.

Totally agree, its just a headche to have to RELEARN everything.
tiredmike59 07-13-2013, 08:13 PM If the prices of food keep going up I might just start skipping the checkouts all together. If I get caught I will act like that old guy on Seinfeld, " I'm old, I can't remember anything ".
robyrob 07-13-2013, 08:23 PM But where are you in a big hurry to go? Are you on your way to work?
it depends, for one thing I'm in a hurry to get the heck OUT of there.
for the most part I treat the self-checkout like the 10 items or less line - which in my store is a 15 items or less line and people act like it is the 23 items or less line, but usually if i am only grabbing a couple of things it is because it is something we need for dinner, which is waiting for my return.
Retro4Life 07-13-2013, 08:51 PM Hate the entire concept. Never used one, and never will.
Frump 07-13-2013, 09:05 PM Hate the entire concept. Never used one, and never will.
I said the same thing. And I'm thinking about it I MIGHT use one ONE time just to say I did it lol but never again.
I've started a lil campagne of Facebook encouraging all my friends not to use them, it may not amount to much but maybe a few ppl can make a difference.
OH Nuts! 07-13-2013, 09:05 PM I use them when I have a few items, otherwise I wait for a person to assist me.
Frump 07-13-2013, 09:17 PM I use them when I have a few items, otherwise I wait for a person to assist me.
I've never used one, so I don't really understand how they are faster like ppl are saying they are, I mean don't things still have to be scanned?
But honestly, I've always thought there should be a couple of counters for ppl with only like 1-3 items.
It's getting rarer and rarer what someone with a shopping cart full will let someone with 2 or 3 items go in front of them.
Family Ties Forever! 07-13-2013, 10:19 PM I don't like the self check outs because I can't see what the screen says. Those machines don't have large print or braille.
JamesG 07-13-2013, 11:44 PM Most supermarkets that I go to don't have them.
Only one of them has it and it's meant for 15 items or less so I use it only when I have a couple of items.
Tweety 07-14-2013, 05:14 PM Personally, I like having the option to self-checkout. At Wal Mart, I'd only use that option if I have a few items that I can carry in the hand basket. There's not a lot of space at the self checkout "counter" for very many items.
I don't mind dealing with cashiers either though. Most of the time, they're very pleasant (I try to hit stores during their slow times of the day).
Brieannas21 07-14-2013, 05:47 PM I love them, I can get in and out without a problem.

I would rather do that then to stand in line behind 5 people with carts full of food while my ice cream is melting. I could be home by the time those same 5 people make it out to their cars.

Brieannas21 07-14-2013, 07:00 PM Do you prefer the same when you go in a pharmacy?
Pharmacy's around my parts don't have self checkouts. Only grocery stores, Super Target, Wal-Mart, Home Depot and Lowes.
Tweety 07-21-2013, 07:05 PM I don't see how Pharmacies would ever allow for self checkouts. Too many liability issues there.
TVFactFan 07-21-2013, 08:00 PM I don't see how Pharmacies would ever allow for self checkouts. Too many liability issues there.
Not the Pharmacy, the other part of the store
CVS Pharmacy is separate from the other part of the store

Yes, I thought about that later, at first I thought you meant the Pharmacy itself.
I haven't been in a CVS for a while, I'm not sure our local CVS has self service check out, but they might.
phoebe7165 07-22-2013, 11:05 AM I didn't like self check out at first because I just could not get the hang of it but now that I know what the heck I'm doing. It's particularly good for me when I have more items than the 20 or less but my cart isn't as full as alot of the people in the cashier lines, and they are taking forever to get checked out!!

MrCleveland 07-22-2013, 01:00 PM I love the self check-outs, but only Giant Eagle has that...others have cashiers. I don't mind that either.
But machines WILL take over...or so it seems, like in this 1968 nugget!...

Thanks. Like I said, I think technology is was good back in like the early 2000s but beyond that it's just gotten silly, I mean what's next, virtual houses so we can do away with real houses to have more.....space, so houses won't be eyesores. lol
That seems to be the way it is today, get rid of as much as possible so we can have all this....space.
Only use them if I have under 5 items and they can be scanned easily. If I have produce, coupons, etc., I'd rather go to a cashier.
