Is it just me or are there other people out there thinking that a pot of "prime-time" gold was missed out by not having Archie Bunker meet John Evans, Sr? Before anyone says, "Hey, what's ol' DoubleNaughtSpy talkin' about? That couldn't happen" let me remind you that Edith cousin was Maude Findlay. And in her own self-titled show, Maude employed Florida Evans, who in turn starred as the matriarch of "Good Times." Ergo, Archie Bunker and John Evans could have crossed paths. Imagine the hilarity that would have ensued if Archie would have dared hurled his 1970's "barely acceptable" bigoted insults at badass John Evans? I can hear the laughter now as Edith says to Archie, "Oh Archie! That man just broke your nose and busted a couple of ribs. I think we'd better get to a hospital!" Then Archie would respond with a "Stifle it, Edith!" as he coughed up blood. Ah... 'good times' indeed. :)

Do you mean James Evans, Sr., JJ's father on Good Times?

I always thought it would have been funny if the Bunkers met the Evans'.

James would have gotten ticked off at Archie no doubt, but I think James would have been decent to Archie for the most part, since Archie was his eldor, James seemed to have a lot of old fashined values like respecting your eldors.... I think the REAL conflict would be between Archie and Michael.

Actually,Good Times is believed by some not to have been spun off from Maude at all.Therefor the show was perhaps not set in the All In The Family "universe".

I assume the reasons for this belief would be as follows.

1:When Florida's husband ocassionally appeared on Maude, even though he was played by the same actor,John Amos, his first name was Henry, not James.

2:When she was still Maude's maid, she and her husband claimed to be wealthy and living in New York, not poor in eastside Chicago.

3:There was never any reference made to Florida's occupation as Maude's maid on Good Times.

I guess it all comes down to how strictly you define the term. Even if Good Times was created entirely independently of Maude (and by obvious extension AITF) the fact remains that the character of Florida Evans, which originated with Maude, was 'spun off' to star in it.

It's not a spinoff which was admitted by a good times producer

Also it was no way for the Evans who lived in a chicago with limited money, to be in Queens, NY

So a crossover was not possible

We all know how much Archie liked visiting his relatives. ;) I doubt he would travel by bus to visit Maude, let alone to visit Maud's maid and her husband. He didn't even visit Jefferson, and they lived in the same city!

Maude's maid was in Chicago so that was not possible

Also Archie didn't visit the Jeffersons because they were not friends. So only Edith would have visited them, or Mike to see Lionel

Since it really wasn't a spin-off, I wonder why they kept the name Florida, for Esther Rolle's character.

The fact that it was in Chicago confirms that it really wasn't a spinoff. What connection does Maude have to the city of Chicago?

Strange things about All In The Family.

No one owned a car. Archie drove Munsons cab but that was not a personal vehicle. They would ride the bus or taxis. Was everything nearby enough where they did not need transportation?

In the episode where Maude took care of the sick family, Archie sent a telegram to Maude telling her not to come. A telegram? Really? didn't they have a telephone? Concerning that....the Bunker's phone company was 25 years behind the times, still using for a phone number, like Klondike-553. This is 1972! Didn't they have 555-5555 numbers like every other tv show on Earth?

My grandparents didn't have a car either at the time AITF premiered on CBS in 1971. Just like Archie and Edith, they had a house and children and caught the bus. Guess a car wasn't that important in those days

wish they were still around so i could ask why

My Grandmother never had a car. She would walk and otherwise take public transportation to get around. Of course her children would take her out sometimes but for every day living she just took the bus.

A lot of people don't own cars in NYC and vicinity. Public transportation is the way to go. Traffic and parking is too much of a hassle. I suppose it depends if you have a driveway and garage, also.
