View Full Version : Friggatriskaidekaphobia
I can hear JoJoJo now, "There goes Kitt again with the big words." Friggatriskaidekaphobia means fear of or superstition about Friday the13th or the number 13. Just so you won't think that I'm showing off, I'll be honest, I only learned of the word recently myself. What are y'alls thoughts about Friday the 13th or the number13? If you are superstitious about it, tell us to what degree. Any personal stories or stories you've heard, that are related to the day or the number?
Hollow 02-15-2002, 03:41 PM How do you say Friggatriskaidekaphobia?
Mossopp 02-15-2002, 03:42 PM Apparently the whole reason the number 13 gets such a bad rap is cos 13 was traditionally the number of witches in a coven. I don't know why specifically Friday 13th should be unlucky though.
I dunno if I believe in Friday 13th being unlucky. Bad stuff happens to me quite often - it doesn't need to be a Friday or the 13th of the month! ;) I think people just expect bad things to happen on Friday 13th so if even the smallest little thing goes wrong for them on that day they will immediately blame it on the date.
Kay Scarpetta 02-15-2002, 03:45 PM Ok, don't anyone laugh at me, but I'm friggen petrified of the number 13. I don't know why, or how, I just am. On Friday the 13th I'm afraid to walk out of the house in fear I'll probably get shot, stabbed, or killed in any such way!
Chocoholic 02-15-2002, 04:03 PM I'm definitely not a superstitious type, so I'm not scared of Friday the 13th or the number 13. My birthday has fallen on Friday the 13th a couple of times and nothing bad happened. I've had numerous tests in school over the years on Friday the 13th and I usually did quite well and if I did do poorly, then it was my own fault for not studying hard enough.
Hollow 02-15-2002, 04:11 PM I'm supersticious like i'm scared of the number 13 and friday the 13th and stuff and i put my feet up when i'm in a car and i'm going over a railroad track and i dont spend any money that i find and i don't walk when i have like one shoe on and stuff
marmalade 02-15-2002, 05:12 PM Friday the 13th is just another day to me, and 13 is just a number. The only thing that's ever happened to me on a Friday the 13th, is I broke a lamp, and that was probably 12 or 13 years ago. But I've broken plenty of other stuff on other days so...no big deal.
FOLrocks1 02-15-2002, 05:17 PM I am not superstisious at all. I not think that something bad is going to happen on friday 13. And if it does, I don't blame the DAY for something.
Czas na Zywiec 02-15-2002, 08:32 PM I'm not superstitious or anything, and I actually like the number 13. Contrary to popular belief, I tend to think 13 is good luck, well for me anyway because my birthday is the 13th of August, so that explains it. :D
Montana Ponine 02-15-2002, 08:37 PM Well...I'm not superstitious but I don't like the number 13 for some reason. I just don't...but Fridays that fall on the 13 don't freak me out or anything.
Czas na Zywiec 02-09-2003, 03:53 PM And it seems as if we'll just be a number off for a Friday the 13th this month, oh well. :p The only one this year will be in June. Odd because there's usually 2 or 3 a year.

When i saw the topic, I didn't even think it was a word.
So if friggatriskaidekaphobia means fear of the number 13
what does
jklieldkcauiwkekdlbhhioslcphobia mean? (that's pronouced w/ a silent j)
:)
*Marilyn Monroe* 02-09-2003, 03:59 PM I'm not superstitious about Friday the 13th. I think it was probably just some marketing ploy so that they can make "scary" made-for-TV movies.
I don't believe in that stuff.
I read somewhere once that the 13th used to be considered a lucky number, and through the years something transpired causing it to be supposedly unlucky. I wish I could remember where I read that, because it was an interesting article. hmmm
Nice word though, Kitt. I have a theory though, if I can't spell it I don't say it, so I think I'll just etch that one from my vocabulary;)

I don't balme you. It's one heck of a mouthful even if you can pronounce it. I know I can't. :)

What in the hell?!? I used to be such a freak. 13 is only a number. I can't believe I used to be 'scared' of it  Shows how much I've grown up over the last year or so....

Yeah that's right Karly. That's kind of exciting if you think about it. I mean, how much you can change in ways that you couldn't imagine just only a year or so ago.

Quite scary too....
Chocoholic 02-09-2003, 04:46 PM I'm still not superstitious :D
I am starting to fear Mondays though...

I am starting to fear Mondays though... Don't expect that to go away until you're 65 or so. Monday's should be against the law. There are songs written to describe the repulsiveness of that day. More grumpy faces on Monday mornings, I'll bet, than any other day of the week.
Titania 02-09-2003, 05:17 PM im not downright afraid of fri the 13th, but im a little more careful than usual that day....
ABlairican Pie 02-09-2003, 06:12 PM Actually, I knew that the word meant fear of the number 13:
triskai=3, deka=10, phobia=fear. I first thought the prefix frigga meant some kind of European vulgarity:lol: But now it makes sense: frigga or Freya is the Nordic goddess of love, (etc.), and her name became the word for Friday, day of Frigg/Freya. I thought people were superstitious about 13 because there were 13 disciples present at the Jesus' last supper...so when Judas left, everything went back to normal?
Hollow 02-09-2003, 06:26 PM A few years ago on friday the 13th, my friend's brother was jumpin off the high dive but his head missed the water and hit the sidewalk and his brains were pouring out and he almost died...i wasnt there but thats freaky.
*PinkLady* 02-09-2003, 07:09 PM To me, Friday the 13th and the number 13 mean nothing. They're normal.
White_Daisy 02-09-2003, 08:58 PM Odd numbers are good luck:D

Babes_Cat 02-09-2003, 09:34 PM *shrugs* No idea.... my dad and my brother's lucky number is 13... the 13th is just another day for me....
~*Hannah_Lee*~ 02-09-2003, 11:38 PM My best friend's basketball is number 13, and she's had a good season, so I dont guess its bad luck.
¤I Love Clay Aiken¤ 02-09-2003, 11:40 PM Im supersticious, but Friday the 13th and the #13 dont really bother me. I remember last year in NYC, it went from the 12th to the 14th floor- no 13th. However, if I were to be on the 13th floor, Id be a lil freaked, but Id get over it.
JoJoJoJoJoJoJoJoJo 02-10-2003, 12:11 AM i didn't even realize this post was old....

None of the hotels here have a room 13.........it just goes from 12 to 14. Stupid in my opinion, but when ya get people like Karli and you stick her in a room of that number, they'd freak and leave town as soon as possible.
Just joking Karli. *lush* :loveya:
