View Full Version : Cool old people

I wanted to make a list of the people that, for different reasons, are/were cool old people. Please feel free to add any.

Mother Winslow (Family Matters) ~ She read Rolling Stone magazine, was familiar with the slang of the 90's, could play pool like nobody's business, nailed an obnoxious guy in the family jewels, had an active dating life and didn't take crap from anyone.

The Golden Girls ~ Pretty much all of them. They all attended a Madonna concert. Betty White lives and breathes cool old lady. Sophia listened to the Purple Rain soundtrack. Blanche had a very active dating life.

Helen Roper (Three's Company) ~ Although she may have had a questionable fashion sense (well, it was the 70's) Mrs. Roper was friendly to the kids, quick with a witty line and was accepting of Jack's gay lifestyle (well, perceived anyway) when it wasn't commonplace.

Bob Barker ~ Not so much the current Bob, who has become plagued with wrongful termination suits from the Price is Right and complaints of rude behavior. But the Bob of the 80's and 90's maintained a fine balance of rooting for the contestans and his hilariously sarcastic remarks, was an early champion of animal rights and kicked Adam Sandler's butt.

Mr. Myiagi (Karate Kid movies) ~ The bad guys in these films were more likable than some would say they had any right to be. But despite that, Mr. Myiagi, who even though he was old and short in stature, had the ability to kick some rear end. Was a master of karate (learned from his father), had a bad-ass collection of classic cars, a sweet-ass house, put up with all of Danielle's incessant whining, and stopped an arrow shot at him -- with his bare hands, and performed many other awesome feats.

Mona (Who's the Boss?) ~ Rich and elegant without being snobby, she didn't let her age stop her from having an active dating life.

Robert Stack ~ helped put away numerous bad guys on Unsolved Mysteries, had comedic roles in Beavis and Butthead do America and BASEket ball and Pepsi commercials, maintains wide fan base to this day, 10 years after his death. Unsolved Mysteries is one of the most active forums on here.

Young Mr. Grace (Are You Being Served?) ~ Usually overrode most of management's poor decisions, friendly to the younger staff, liked the ladies even in his 90's.

Ha, yes. I had originally remembered her, but forgot her when I made the list. She was a hilarious, beer drinking woman who didn't take crap from anyone, wrestled and learned dirty dancing -- in her 60's!

I've been meaning to watch Amen. It's on my "to watch" list. I watched snippets of it when it first aired when I was a kid. I have seen Mama Carlson once and don't remember much about her. I need to upgrade my WKRP set.

Old and still crotchety Dr. McCoy from "Star Trek" is a hoot. He makes an appearance in the pilot episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" as well as William Shatner's "Star Trek" novels.:) And of course, the older Captain Kirk and Commander Spock are still cool too. Funnily enough, Scotty is still around in the ST:TNG timeline as well and he's now younger than Kirk, Spock and McCoy as he skipped over about 75 years to get there.:)

She wasnt a regular on the show, but how about Uncle Phil's mom on the Fresh Prince Of Belair? She snuck out of the house to go to that concert with Will. Also, what about Nana Mary from Roseanne? She was a hoot. She always talked about her younger years and how wild they were. Selma Hacker from Night Court was also an older cool lady. She was gruff at times, but I thought she was cool. But I think the top 2 ones would be Thelma Harper and Mother Winslow. Mother Winslow was ALWAYS talking about men. lol. When the actress that played her (Rosetta Lenoir) passed away, I dont remember any news outlet mentioning her death. Sad.

wiseguy182
04-02-2013, 12:58 AM
Gimme A Break! and Leave It To Beaver are also on my "to watch lists". I just started revisiting Night Court, having just picked up the first season last week.

I actually prefer Bev to Nana Mary. I think Estelle Parsons nailed that role. Also, Sally Struthers as Bill Addy's needy mom on Still Standing. They both nailed the part of wonderfully irritating mother perfectly.

Oh here's one I forgot: Shovel-weilding Old Man Marley in Home Alone. Had to put up with all those false rumors that he was a serial killer. Turns out he was a nice guy who saved Kevin from the Wet Bandits. The part at the end where he reconciles with his family always gets me choked up.

This could also apply to athletes too. The Fabulous Moolah was still regularly wrestling in her mid 60's and doing dropkicks at that!

wiseguy182
04-02-2013, 04:18 AM
How about Mama Kim Johnson from Survivor Africa? I always thought she was underestimated. Nobody gave her a chance at all, but she won the final 2 immunity challenges, including a physical one against 2 young males, and made it to second place. I thought she might have won, but she faced a particularly bitter and dumb jury. Not to mention Kelly's luck-based vote for Ethan.

I third that nomination. I love the "Home Alone" movies and Marley was a particularly great character in the first movie- and yes, his family reconciliation makes me cry too- great moment. That is one reason why the first two movies particularly are more than just Christmas comedy movies- they have some heart to them as well and I love it.:)

Hyacinth Bucket (Keeping Up Appearances) ~ Always inviting people over for Candlelight suppers, inviting Elizabeth and Emmet over for tea or coffee; generous, delightful woman

Uncle Jed (Little House on the Prairie) ~ Played by E.J. Andre, who played several other one-time only characters on the show as well. Kindly old man who wanted to use his newfound riches to provide well for the Ingalls adopted children (and Jed's niece and nephew) Cassandra and James (Jason Bateman). Donated money to Reverend Alden for a new church roof, and to Doc Baker, who got paid mostly in chickens, apples and homemade quilts. Heck, he even bought new school clothes for all the Ingalls kids just so that they didn't feel awkward or left out.

Uncle Jesse on Dukes of Hazzard!

Sheriff Amos Tupper (Murder, She Wrote) ~ A wee bit too old-fashioned at times, but mostly a down-to-Earth, common sense, kindly old guy that came back on the job after retirement due to Cabot Cove's high crime rate. Just being able to put up with all of Jessica's crap warrants him a place on this list.

Leslie Nielsen ~ The guy reinvented himself in the 80's as a comedic actor, after having played serious roles for most of his early acting career, and was very successful in both. Basically created a whole new type of comedy.

Judge Joseph Wapner (The People's Court) ~ The original (and best) t.v. judge, set the tone for all the court shows that followed. A wise and fair man with extensive legal knowledge who actually deliberated on the cases before rendering a verdict.

George Takei ~ Gained newfound fame in his old age as a Facebook icon and "The Funniest guy on Facebook", supporter of numerous great causes.

Now I'm kicking myself for forgetting to add Uncle Jesse Duke. From what I've read and heard on the DVD commentaries, Denver Pyle was as loved by the cast and crew as Uncle Jesse was by his family and the other upstanding folk in Hazzard County. :D

I'm also going to include Charles Lane, the late character actor who was in everything from It's a Wonderful Life to I Love Lucy to Family to Soap to Petticoat Junction and more, so much more. He was also a guest in what may be my favorite Bewitched episode of all time, "Speak the Truth" from its second season.

When he turned 100 in 2005, that year's TV Land awards did a special tribute to him, presented him with a TV Land trophy and a birthday cake, and everyone in the auditorium sang "Happy Birthday" to him. Then he bellowed out, "I'm still available!" Priceless!!! In early 2007, I wrote him a letter and asked him if he would sign my index card and send it back in a stamped envelope I had included, and he did. Thankfully, I did that just in time, because he passed just a couple of months later.

Here's the TV Land tribute:

Didn't know you're a Mr. Belvedere fan, too.

I would love for those last two seasons to come out on DVD from Shout Factory, but Mike Dunn, the CEO of Fox Home Entertainment, is a greedy pain-in-the-you-know-what.

wiseguy182

Oh yes, I love Airplane! That was just a great cast all the way around.

And yes on Bob Newhart as well. I loved his shows in the 90's: Bob and George and Leo. Haven't seen him much lately though. A few guest appearances on shows and that's it.

Bob was a magnificent series. I love how Bob would be mild-mannered most of the time, but would be prone to occasional fits of anger. It's too bad his 90's show didn't last long.

catlover79

My favorite cool old guy is Gus Witherspoon from Our House. Wilfred Brimley was awesome as that character.

Not to mention that he is awesome as the DIABEETUS spokesman. When my oldest nephew was a baby, I was watching him one night while his parents were out for the evening, and he wouldn't stop crying. The TV was on in the background, and Mr. Brimley appeared, saying,"Check it!! Check it often!!" in reference to blood sugar.

So as a last ditch attempt to calm Andrew down and get him to stop crying, I started imitating Mr. Brimley. Andrew started to laugh!! Then he was fine until my sister and brother-in-law came home.

THANK YOU, MR. BRIMLEY!!!!

Well I'm going to go ahead and do it. Jessica Fletcher. A popular belief is that she really killed all those people. And while we do know that Jessica, in her attempt to catch "the real killer", often broke laws herself and was a nosy busybody to the nth degree, this site does a really good job of reminding us what a cool old lady Jessica Fletcher is. And it's a damn shame Angela Lansbury didn't win an Emmy despite being nominated all 12 years Murder, She Wrote was on the air.

I can't believe I forgot to add Steven Hill here, who was part of the original Law & Order cast as the district attorney, Adam Schiff. He was in his late 60s when he started on L&O and stayed for 10 seasons. Adam Schiff was often grumpy, sarcastic and rarely seen not eating a sandwich.

Well there is of course the Golden Girls, The Major on SOAP was hysterical. In the original Dallas you couldnt get any better than Jock and Miss Ellie . The new Dallas is super with the original members. Ken Kercheval 's Cliff is so bad and I love the gutsyness of Sue Ellen. Bobbi Adler and George Truman were excellent and I laugh my ass off at Jerry Stiller in anything.

wiseguy182

I do like Ralph Furley, though I think I'm a bit partial to the Ropers.

I liked all of Jerry and George's parents, though I can understand why they wouldn't want to be around them all the time. And yes, Jerry Stiller is a riot. Frank: "This is Frank Costanza. You think you can keep me out of Florida? We're moving in lock, stock, and barrel. We're gonna be in the pool! We're gonna be in the clubhouse! We're gonna be all over that shuffleboard court. Gramoo from the movie "My Girl". I love that senile old lady, breaking out into song whenever she felt like it.

Come to think of it, that movie had quite a few good scenes with old people. Where else can you see two old guys getting into a physical confrontation over a bingo game of all things?

And I would be remiss if I didn't mention somebody that just died -- Abe Vigoda.

First one is Nedra Volz - little old lady who was Adelaide on Different strokes and guest starred on lots of shows!:)

Second one is Merie Earle who was Maude Gormley on the Waltons and Sara the operator on Green Acres! :)

I like Jack Warden in Crazy Like a Fox. Harry Fox always made me laugh with all his antics.

Peter Thomas, awesome narrator of Forensic Files and the voice of AED machines, is currently 91.

Katherine MacGregor, probably my all time favorite actress, who did such a wonderful job portraying Harriet Oleson in Little House on the Prairie, is also 91.

Monty Hall is 94. Deserves a mention from all those years dodging crazy contestants on Let's Make A Deal.

Yes! Peter Thomas has a really cool voice! He sure doesn't sound like he's real old! ;)

How about Kirk Devane's grandmother on Newhart - Ruth Gordon?! Not a regular, but she was fabulous! And Eileen Brennan - guest starred twice - as Corinne Denby, Dick's collaborator? "This coffee is great....great!" "You drink it great!"

Love Ruth Gordon! Harold And Maude, what a great performance. She even steals the show with smaller parts, like in My Bodyguard.

How about Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes from Dallas?? I always admired the character Jock Ewing he didn't take much crap from anyone including J.R. or Bobby for that matter. Miss Ellie always trying to keep the Ewing family together no matter what.

I agree. Miss Ellie was wonderful.....a "Steel Magnolia" lady for sure. And JR actually seemed cowed and intimidated by Jock......something no one else could do! ;)

Did anyone mention Albert "Pops" Solomon, Beverly's laid back father on The Goldbergs? He's super cool. One of my favorite things about the show is the friendship between him and his grandson Adam.

Yeah Pops is cool. I wish my Grandpa was like that. A lot better than Pop Pop on Murray's side.

I actually saw one of the Newhart Ruth Gordon episodes the other day right after I posted about her. The one where Kirk ends up in jail for driving the stolen car. Priceless!!! She had me hysterical when her answer to all the questioning that ensued was "Who wants to know!!??" What a gem!

Facts of Life:

Mrs G was cool to me. She was a mentor/mother but at the same time, she put her life and job on the line for those girls plenty of times.
