when season 6 started in a 1978 Newspaper article about the return of Florida. So it definitely looks like his hospital stay was removed from syndication and didn't need to be mentioned at all which makes sense

It's in the article, u have to go toward the top and then across and then u see the comment by the producer that Carl will be hospitalized permantely
