View Full Version : Ok-Cha Wortman
1990 UM fan 01-16-2013, 10:13 AM It has been 40 years and 10 days since Ok-Cha Wortman was last seen by her husband Robert and their daughter Stella. Robert met Ok-Cha while being stationed in the Army in South Korea in the 1970's. They married in 1972 and had a daughter, Stella. They lived on an American Air Force base for some time and Ok-Cha worked as an ice cream vendor. Robert was later transferred back to the United States. Before moving, Ok-Cha wanted to visit her family in South Korea. Robert and Stella never saw Ok-Cha again.
Robert's mother received a phone call from a woman they believe was Ok-Cha in 1975, but the woman on the other end could not understand English and hung up. In 1977, Stella received a package postmarked from California. It contained 4 white dressed and a stuffed dog. Stella believes the gifts where from her mother. To my knowledge, no one has heard from Ok-Cha since then.

So, are they saying Ok-Cha never left Korea? I'm a little confused. That might explain why the person making the phone call is believed to be her. She would not have learned english. However, if she did know english and came to the states, it could've been a Korean relative looking for her. ??

I think so. She did not make it back to Robert and Stella by the time he needed to be stationed back over to the United States. I wonder how they could still find her after all this time? Ok-Cha might be in her 60's today or early 70's.
Killarney Rose 01-17-2013, 01:08 PM Reason I asked is I know a very sweet Korean lady by that name and she would fall in that age group too. She is the widow of a retired serviceman- no kids that I know of.

Do you have a picture of her? If so, please message me.
DazzlerSparkler 06-08-2015, 03:12 PM Is it her?

A UM video channel on Vimeo just uploaded Ok-Cha's segment a week ago, and it's got several pictures of her.
Victoria81 06-19-2015, 02:40 PM I just watched this segment. Oh I hope there is an update!
Archangel85 09-18-2017, 07:19 PM Season 10 is up on Amazon Prime and it contains this segment. Ok-Cha Wortman has yet to be found.
James T 08-12-2018, 11:06 AM Any chance that Robert killed her? Doesn't seem likely she would have made no effort & no confirmation of life for that long-over 40 years now. The clothing could have been sent by anybody.

Nope. :tiphat:
Labonte18 03-17-2023, 02:56 PM Anyone have any Youtube vids on this case? Whether from UM or not?
I'd like to have my stepmother watch it and get her opinion.. She's Korean.. And I think insight from a Korean might help on this.
Certainly seems to me that she was over being married. Not necessarily being married to Robert.. Just.. Being married.

Very last segment.
thanks.. i'll send that over and ask her to watch it and see what her thoughts are.
She was.. More or less a 'war bride'.. She met her first husband while he was stationed in Korea post-war and came back to the states with him. Her and my dad married after my parents divorced and her husband passed.
So, she might have some different insights that could be quite relevant.
Stella Bella Boo 05-10-2023, 07:57 PM Hi, this is Stella. I still haven't located my mother yet. If anyone has any leads or questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you all for your support. <3

Hello Stella I would definitely put your dna into Ancestry. She might have a relative who put there DNA on their. Who possibly came to America and is one who sent you the package for her. Do you know about her family? You might be able to find info on them on korean sight in not family geneology. Also if you can find out names her maden name or family members you can look up people by the name i korea and write to them. I know North and South korea are tight on anything American getting through so she may not never have seen unsolved mystery. Do not give up.
EighthStreet 05-11-2023, 09:26 AM Is it possible her family forced her to stay in South Korea?
Killarney Rose 05-11-2023, 12:32 PM I found out a bit more about my Okja. Just a coincidence that she had the same name as the UM Okja. She has since passed. She did have children and grandchildren and was raising her own family at the time the UM Okja disappeared.
chacha6581 07-05-2023, 03:08 AM Hi Stella . Do you happen to know birthdate, month , year … anything ? I would like to look into it further . I found my birth dad with an incorrectly spelled first and last name so I have faith :-)
The_King 08-24-2024, 06:01 PM I don't want to be rude but my theory is:
- Ok-Cha was a prostitute. This would explain how they met and her "hanging out with the wrong crowd".
- It was a shotgun or rushed wedding with an unexpected pregnancy.
- Ok-Cha probably didn't want to go to Japan/USA, didn't see any stability in the arrangement or just didn't think they were working.
- I think the gift and the phone call could have come from Ok-Cha or a family member.
We really don't have much info on this case so it's hard to make any great guesses. Robert is also our only real source of information and it's tough when there is only one witness involved.
Perhaps It's You 11-15-2025, 06:41 PM I can't believe this hasn't been solved yet, god it has to be like what 50 years since that lady disappeared, she's probaly in her 70s, and Stella has to be like 52.
This was one of the few cases during the short-lived cbs era of the show, that featured Black people as something other than criminals, the other one being the still unsolved murder of Jayson Artis.
My opinion on this case is that Ok-Cha got in over her head thinking she was gonna live a life of luxury with an american soldier, but the reality was another.
I also believe racism and anti-Blackness may have played a role into her abandoning her daughter like that, as she may have felt ashamed of being seen with a Black baby, and her family probably pressured her as well.
Whatever the reasons I do hope Stella is able to find out what happened no matter how ugly the truth might be, for her peace of mind.

I'm not overly surprised.. I've got to ask my stepmother about whether she ever watched this.. But.. There's some big time cultural differences that many people don't recognize. Most of us look at this through "American" eyes.. and.. Korean culture and family is.. Quite different.
It would not be at all surprising to me that her parents said she wasn't going to America.. And.. In some Korean families.. That would be it. She wouldn't be going.

K-dramas are brutal about this truth. If you want to date outside your social class or date a non-Korean, forget it.
