My 14 year old started wearing them at age 3. We have bad eyes around here. :( AKA 01-06-2013, 07:08 PM I got my first pair at age five. Been wearing them ever since. retrofan05 01-06-2013, 07:28 PM I got my first pair in 9th grade, but was made fun of the first day I wore them. After that, I refused to wear them through 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. In my senior year of high school I got a pair that was a bit more stylish, so I didn't mind wearing them as much. HuntingtonM15 01-06-2013, 09:37 PM i started wearing them in third grade Same, but I've also been wearing contacts since 7th grade. Marvo301 01-06-2013, 10:54 PM I got glasses in grade three but generally refused to wear them. Now I wear glasses for reading. Fleet 01-07-2013, 04:25 AM I didn't have glasses until I was about 17 years old. Wore them for 6-7 years then stopped wearing them because I realized they were not necessary. I was nearsighted, but only a little. I wear them more often now because I am more nearsighted than I used to be. ponytail 01-07-2013, 06:06 AM I was 12 years old and I'm still wearing glasses. Penny Lane 01-07-2013, 12:17 PM I got my first pair of glasses after flunking the eye exam at the DMV. I have been wearing contact lenses for years. Wearing eyeglasses give me a headache. gilligan fanatic 01-07-2013, 02:05 PM I was eighteen months old when I got my first pair. Needless to say I have worn them ever since Penny Lane 01-07-2013, 03:02 PM I was eighteen months old when I got my first pair. Needless to say I have worn them ever since My mom,who grew up in the 30's, developed poor eyesight after having the measles. I think that she was probably around 5 years old. My sister in law has been wearing coke bottle glasses all of her life. I never understood why she never tried contacts. Her glasses are so thick that when you look into her eyes they are magnified like a 100 times!Really large!Gilligan Fanatic,(sorry I'm not sure what your name is!) have you ever tried contacts? I love mine but my eyes were never really that bad. I know a lot of people have astigmatism(sp?) and that can be a deterrent to contacts because the lenses will float around. gilligan fanatic 01-07-2013, 08:06 PM My mom,who grew up in the 30's, developed poor eyesight after having the measles. I tried contacts when I was in the eigth grade and I really didn't like them. I've been wanting to get lasik for years but they want me to wait until I'm 25 because they want my prescription to stabalize, which it more or less has. I'm 24 now so I only have another year to wait. They said I would still need glasses even if I got lasik but my prescription wouldn't be as strong. My right eye is the bad one, but my left eye isn't to good either. Family Ties Forever! 01-07-2013, 08:14 PM Yes, I have worn special dark sunglasses for as long as i can remember due to my visual impairment. Retro4Life 01-07-2013, 08:48 PM Started wearing glasses in freshman year of high school...didn't do well on the physical that was required for high school. I got contacts when I was 19 and wore them, off and on, for about a decade, until I finally just decided they were WAY too much trouble, and didn't make my eyes feel very good. I lost some, I got tired of the cleaning hassle and expense, and ultimately, I don't think I look that badly without them (and even if I DID, that really didn't warrant the hassle). Different strokes for different folks. My eyes are pretty bad...my mom had glaucoma and detached retinas as well as cataracts and I've inherited her eyes. (I've also inherited some great stuff from her!) Needless to say, my eye doctor is a very important part of my life. Torgo 01-08-2013, 09:51 AM I was in 1st Grade when I started wearing them. I wore soft contacts in high school through early 20's, but my eyes are just too sensitive, that I went back to just wearing glasses. sara 01-12-2013, 04:22 AM I started wearing glasses in 3rd or 4th grade I actually had bifocals back then. I still wear glasses but I only had bifocals for the first few years. happycat 01-12-2013, 10:56 AM If so, when did you start wearing them? I started wearing them in 5th grade. I started wearing glasses when I was In the 2nd grade. I really needed them!:) JamesG 01-12-2013, 11:42 AM Started wearing glasses in freshman year of high school...didn't do well on the physical that was required for high school. (I've also inherited some great stuff from her!) Needless to say, my eye doctor is a very important part of my life. I was one of the lucky ones in my family. My mother, father and sister all have eye problems/need glasses and I was born with 20/20 vision. My mother was born with glaucoma and cataracts which I hear is rare since most people develop those problems later in life. My eye doctor said that there is "a chance" I could develop them too later on, but he said it's very unlikely in his opinion. howierules86 01-12-2013, 11:42 AM Yes - since I was 7 years old (1st grade). I never had an issue with them, mainly because I always saw Alex Trebek wear them while reading clues on Jeopardy!, and I thought I could be as cool as him, LOL. :) Coffeecup 01-12-2013, 04:44 PM Many of the posters have the same thoughts as I. I started wearing glasses as a freshman in high school. Never wore them much for I could sit in the front seat. I am short as well. Then as my 20's came I wore them more for I just couldn't see as well. Now decades later I still wear them. I too tried contacts but the though of sticking something in my eye didn't appeal to me. A lot of time of cleaning them and I do occasionally doze off with my glasses on. I don't want to deal with chance infections. I kind of like the look of glasses for my skin area below my eyes is thin and glasses give me little color. I admire Elton John and others who are proud to wear glasses. The only time I wished I didn't is when swimming and photos. Glare shines on my glasses in photos. I could get anti glare but every little extra costs money. catlover79 01-14-2013, 03:44 AM Yup, I started wearing glasses in 3rd grade at the age of 9. We found out I was nearsighted - I was having a lot of problems reading the chalkboard, etc. yankeesrj12 01-16-2013, 12:29 AM I was told to start wearing glasses in 5th grade, but I REFUSED to wear them until at least 8th grade. I only wore them in class and essentially squinted the rest of the time to see. When I started driving in 10th grade, I realized I had to wear them or I would probably crash the car. I gave up glasses and switched to contacts in late 11th grade and have been with them for two years now! Looking back, I probably wouldn't have such terrible vision (I can't even see the line below the giant E with my left eye) if I would have just worn them in 5th grade. BigManMike 01-17-2013, 09:41 PM I always wanted them as a kid but never really needed them. I did have to get them in 7th grade for reading mainly because I was sort of farsighted, but after about a year I didn't really need them anymore. I haven't had an eye exam since 2006 (I was 15 then), although I probably need one, although I see just fine. For some weird reason, I actually like to call them spectacles instead of glasses. Crusinforabrusin 01-24-2017, 05:37 PM Since I was 2 years old. I had astigmatism , so that's why I had them at a young age. I still wear glasses to this day HuntingtonM15 01-24-2017, 05:57 PM Same, but I've also been wearing contacts since 7th grade. To update this, I got LASIK in April 2014 and have had no issues whatsoever. DJM77 01-24-2017, 07:34 PM Off and on when I was in high school. I alternated between glasses and contacts for a long time. I had LASIK in 2007 when I was 29. Best $3500 I've ever spent! ABlairican Pie 01-24-2017, 07:42 PM Does wearing them beginning at the age of 16 count as wearing them as a child? Coffeecup 01-24-2017, 09:22 PM To update this, I got LASIK in April 2014 and have had no issues whatsoever. I might like to have Lasik but am nervous for I hear all kind of problems may happen. Was told I have a start of cataracts and maybe with a new lenses things may be better. As for now sticking with glasses til things get worse. Rawr 01-25-2017, 12:16 AM Yes. Had to get my first pair of glasses when I was in the 3rd grade. At first, it started off as astigmatism but then it progressed into nearsightedness. Hawkee 01-25-2017, 02:59 AM I had to wear glasses when I was around three years old because I had eye surgery because I started having eye trouble and after my eye surgery the eye doctor recommended glasses to help me see and focus in school. I wore glasses until I was ten years old but now I no longer wear glasses now but my first pair of glasses were plain colored ones but then I got pink colored glasses and my mom still has my old pairs of glasses in her memory box Bestie AB 01-25-2017, 07:29 PM I didn't have to wear glasses as a child but I have to wear them now to read. My son had to wear them when he was little to correct a lazy eye. Polarity 01-26-2017, 02:05 AM I've worn glasses since I was 18 months, and got contacts in 3rd grade. I didn't start wearing my contacts regularly until 7th grade, though. I want LASIX, but have been told that I'd still have to wear glasses/contacts anyway, cause it wouldn't totally correct my vision. :( Dude111 01-26-2017, 02:06 PM Yup I wear glasses and I want the same as I had in the 80s... GLASS LENS!!!!! Alot of times now they try to scare ppl off of them now as they are too cheap to order GLASS now (Thats the real reason) -- YOU CAN STILL GET IT,BUT THEY GIVE YOU ALOT OF FLACK!! Torgo 01-26-2017, 02:25 PM Yup I wear glasses and I want the same as I had in the 80s... GLASS LENS!!!!! Dude111 01-29-2017, 08:59 PM Your very lucky!!!!!!!!! Tubehead 01-29-2017, 10:52 PM i wore them ever cents kindergarten!! but i don't have to wear them now!! i think right in ending of middle school during the beginning of high shcool i didn't need them any more!! i hadn't been to an eye doctor in years!! i probably should go!! i also see dots a lot!! especially if i stare at the tv computer or the sun gets in my eyes!! my eye doctor told me i wouldn't need glasses unless i started driving then i would have to wear them cause i can't see close up!! KJH278 02-04-2017, 12:53 PM been waring them since nursery school andtherest 02-15-2017, 04:02 PM When I was 9. Tubehead 02-17-2017, 12:19 AM i wore glasses ever cents pre school unitl the being of high shcool then the eye doctors said i wouldn't need them unless i started driving!! but now i went back to my eye doctor he said i had cataract in my eye he said thats unusually for my age but he said i could been born with it !! but i will have to wear glasses aging but just to see up close i started noticed when i looked at an menu far away that i couldn't see it!! gidgetgrape 02-18-2017, 02:52 PM I started wearing glasses in the 9th grade and it was one of the best things that ever happened to me. Before then I had headaches and sometimes when I closed my eyes I saw little clouds. When I was in school, I couldn't see the chalkboard and I had to copy other people's notes and try to get to class early to copy the board. I once walked up to a complete group of strangers thinking they were my friends! It was very stressful. I told my mother about not being able to see the chalkboard, but she thought I was faking. When she was a kid she wanted eyeglasses so she thought I just wanted them too. I ended up getting glasses near the middle of the school year when the school did a vision screening in the nurse's office. I failed the test and the nurse gave me a paper for a free eye exam and glasses. Hallelujah! I didn't care how the glasses made me look, I was so happy to see and not be dependent on others. Furienna 02-26-2017, 02:32 PM I did have glasses for three years as a kid, then I was alowed to drop them. But I had to get glasses again twenty years later, because I had become near-sighted. |
