View Full Version : Is it possible to like more than 4 shows from the 1960's?
TVFactFan 12-29-2012, 08:42 PM This decade to me has always been the worst era for TV. The 50's was a lot better but for some reason the shows in this decade just seems very corny.
The only shows in this decade I can watch is Gomer Pyle and Gilligan's Island

I think all those shows from the 60's did well because

*ROGER* 12-29-2012, 09:35 PM I like ZERO shows from the 60s. I'd much rather watch shows from the 50s like The Honeymooners or I Love Lucy.
The 60s sucked for television.

1960'sTVfan 12-29-2012, 10:34 PM I agree with Zoneboy, I also think the 60's was the best decade for TV, although I'm mainly a fan of sitcoms. Westerns, dramas and cop shows aren't usually to my liking. By a wide margin, the majority of my favorite sitcoms are those from the 60's.

1960'sTVfan 12-29-2012, 10:57 PM Another thing that made the 60's a great decade for TV was the variety shows that used to air in those days. Jackie Gleason had a show, Perry Como had a show, Bob Hope would have one on NBC now and then, but the show most people remember today is Dean Martin's show, he had an excellent show as well. Carol Burnett carried the torch of variety shows into the 70's, when her show was cancelled that was it for variety shows, the end of an era.
1960'sTVfan 12-29-2012, 11:23 PM This decade to me has always been the worst era for TV. The 50's was a lot better but for some reason the shows in this decade just seems very corny.
This is true, some 60's sitcoms tend to be on the corny side, that type of humor was popular in those days. F Troop is one example of a 60's sitcom with corny humor. But I would rather watch a corny 60's sitcom over any sitcom made today, today's sitcoms are all the same, distastefully done and one lame sex joke after another.
Regulus 12-29-2012, 11:43 PM My Ranking:
1950s
1960s
1970s
1980s
1990s

2010s
I have ranked them according to IMO how great were each decade. As you can see I noticed declining a bit in the 1980s with the advent of Newsbreaks, the demise of the Television Code and the introduction of those cursed  Infomercials  and the 1990s with the advent of Prescription Drug Commercials, but these declines are nowhere near they have been since the dawn of the 21'st Century. IMO TV as I knew it "Jumped the Shark, with the advent of 'Unscripted' TV Shows, then the   ticked: :angryfire INSANE :angryfire ticked:   amount of additional advertisement, both commercials and "On Screen" Advertisments (That's "Pop-Ups" Logos, Scrolls and Banners for those of you in Rio Linda!). as you can see the drop for the last 12 years has been quite precipitous.
Ihavealife2uknow 12-30-2012, 03:37 AM Gilligans Island is easily my favorite from this decade.
There are others I like such as The Munsters, I Dream Of Jeannie, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, The Beverly Hillbillies and The Andy Griffith Show but all of those shows are shows I'd only watch if nothing else was on. They aren't favorites of mine.
This and the 50's were probably my least favorite decades (50s because I only know I Love Lucy and Leave It To Beaver).
I'd probably rank them:

Amen to that. The 60s was a great decade for shows. While I have many I like, my four favorites are Bewitched, The Twilight Zone (which I absolutely revere - Rod Serling was a hands-down genius)', Petticoat Junction and That Girl (which gets my vote for MOST CHARMING show ever).
Hard for me to decide a ranking for decades as each decade has had some real gems.
1960'sTVfan 12-30-2012, 01:17 PM For the most part, I don't watch TV shows made in the 80's and after. Having said that, my order of preference for TV shows by decade is as follows:
60's
50's
70's
LUNCH 12-30-2012, 04:31 PM The 60's was a superb decade for TV shows. In my opinion televisions best decades by far are the 1950s-70s. Between those three decades it's hard for me to decide which one is the best simply because so much excellent TV was made then.--One thing that stands out about 1960s TV in general (as touched on already)is the amazing variety of TV shows.
icecream 12-30-2012, 11:55 PM The 60s had several great shows. At one point Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie were my two favorite sitcoms. Family Affair is one of the most underrated shows of all time. Dick Van Dyke and Petticoat Junction are good, and I've gotten into Hazel this year. If you like Gomer Pyle you should give its parent show Andy Griffith a try, the black-and-white episodes are great. Drama wise Dragnet 1967, Adam-12, and Alfred Hitchcock Presents are three of the best dramas of all time.
Spark Of Spirit 12-31-2012, 12:11 AM Sure, the 60s were a great decade for sitcoms. I wasn't alive then (not for a couple of decades, I'm afraid) but I don't have any problem watching shows from that time. In fact, Zoneboy mentioned a few of them that I enjoy.
All in all, I'd say it's one of the best television-wise.
USATVFAN 12-31-2012, 12:50 AM The only Shows I really like from the 1960s are The Dick Van Dyke Show, Andy Griffin Show and Hazel and that is about it. To tell you the truth I have not seen half of the shows from the 1960s and the only Shows I have seen from the 1950s are I Love Lucy, The Honeymooners and Leave it to Beaver.
My Favroite decades are: 70's, 90's, 80s, 60's. 50's, 2000's and the worst decade being now,
MickeyMac 12-31-2012, 03:08 PM Best decade for TV shows for me is hands down the 1960's.
The rural shows like Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acers, Petticoat Junction and Gomer Pyle, I can do without (sole exception of that style is The Andy Griffith Show). Also I cant stand My Mother The Car.
Other than that great decade for TV shows.

I love Bewitched. Gilligan's Island, Batman and The Flintstones as well. Other than that, not big on the '60s sitcoms. More of a '70s/'80s guy (and '50s).

Yup same as me.
I forgot about Batman too but for the most part I;m so addicted to the 70's to 90's era.
Mr. Television 12-31-2012, 08:44 PM My top 10 60's sitcoms
1-The Beverly Hillbillies
2-The Andy Griffith Show
3-I Dream of Jeannie
4-Gomer Pyle USMC
5-Get Smart
6-Family Affair
7-Bewitched
8-The Munsters
9-The Lucy Show
10-My Three Sons
I like a lot of other sitcoms too. Not too many bad ones in this bunch.
tvfreak1987 01-01-2013, 12:12 AM There are many 60's sitcoms I love. My top 10:
1. I Dream of Jeannie
2. Bewitched
3. Dick Van Dyke
4. Get Smart
5. Car 54, Where Are You?
6. Gilligan's Island
7. Dobie Gillis
8. My Three Sons
9. Donna Reed
10. The Lucy Show
And I just scratched the surface, LOL. Most of them may be corny, but that's part of the charm IMO.
I used to LOVE the 60s sitcoms more than any other eras when I was a kid and even in some of my teen years, but I just can't get in to a lot of them anymore - I do still love Andy Griffith, Dick Van Dyke, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, and I Dream Of Jeannie. Pretty much it these days, though.
Overall, with sitcoms, the 80s are probably my favorite decade, followed by 70s (minus some of the Norman Lear sitcoms that have been overexposed), 90s, 60s, and 50s (all I really care for from that decade is I Love Lucy and Leave It to Beaver).
Just throwing this in, with dramas, I'd have to go 70s, 80s, 60s, 90s, 50s. The 60s produced some awesome westerns and sci-fi series.

^ Totally agree, those were the two best decades! There were so many wonderful shows on TV in the 1960's even though some people think they're corny, they were still good to watch. The Andy Griffith Show, That Girl, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Bewitched, Gilligan's Island & Gidget are some of my favorite comedies from that decade.
TVFactFan 01-02-2013, 09:51 PM So many good shows in the '60s. One after another...

bencasey 01-10-2013, 08:00 PM So, what's better now? The westerns? variety shows? war shows? half hour dramas? Oh, I'm sorry, none of those things exist anymore. Plus its much easier to tell a compelling story in 40 mins than in 52 minutes. Right. Modern TV sucks.

Westerns weren't the only thing on tv during the 60's. People still had other things to choose from unless of course all the networks had a western on at the same time.
Mr. Television 01-10-2013, 08:39 PM Westerns are doing very well still on networks like MeTV, TV Land, INSP, Encore, etc...
When I first got cable one of the channels I loved was CBN on Saturdays. They had classic westerns on tv all day.

It used to be you had the following choices:
ABC
CBS
NBC
PBS
and maybe an Independent Station or Two
Today you have these choices
Procedural Shows
Sitcoms
News
"Reality" Shows.
CommonTater 01-12-2013, 11:40 AM Because people had nothing else and no other choice but to watch them.

With all the channels we get today I would gladly give it up to go back to those days. My family was never at a loss for a show we really enjoyed and we still love those shows today as do millions of others craving classic TV. I know plenty of young people that refer classic TV. This is just my humble opinion but they can have all the Reality shows and the rest. I realize there are people that like Reality and I'm not saying it should be taken off but I think it's been taken a little too far. We look for old shows and that's about all we watch on TV. Thank goodness some of the networks on Dish are airing some great old shows.
happycat 01-12-2013, 11:49 AM Almost all the DVDs of tv shows my parents have are from the 1960's and I've become quite fond of them. My parents seldom watch regular tv. About the only thing my dad watches would be sports and the news (the news channels)
broadmoor 01-12-2013, 12:31 PM It's funny, in a sort of perverse way, but in the 1960s with only three networks, there still seemed to be more of a variety in program fare... sitcoms, westerns, doctor shows, crime and detective, sci-fi, anthology, variety shows, jungle adventure, war shows, lawyer shows, musicals, spy/espionage, etc. There were even a couple of shows that took place on the rodeo circuit, a couple with a circus backrop, plus some animal shows like Flipper, Lassie and Gentle Ben, a few soaps like Peyton Place, panel shows like "I've Got a Secret" and "What's My Line." Heck, there were even a few psychiatrist shows (Eleventh Hour, Breaking Point), of all things!
Then, when you even sub-categorize things, like sitcoms, you had settings as varied as a deserted island or a Prisoner-of-War camp! Just boggles my mind, the variety found in 1960s television.

I'm not talking about TV choices, I;m talking about options period which is internet and netflix, hulu, etc.
CommonTater 01-12-2013, 03:31 PM I apologize if I misunderstood, due to my illness my brain doesn't always hit on all 8 cylinders.
TVFactFan 01-12-2013, 03:39 PM Does anyone honestly believe that a western would have kept the attention of someone if the internet was around in the 60's? LOL
There were no distractions in the 60's so people could easily pay attention to a show.
Retro4Life 01-12-2013, 04:32 PM The advent of "internet and cable" has had NOTHING to do with making more quality programming, and if anything, has contributed to the general decline of such.
There are tons of good shows from the 1960's. As everyone has mentioned, the sheer variety of programming alone was staggering. Comedies, action, science fiction, adventure, variety, westerns, suspense, dramas, and more...how could anyone truly compare the homogenized, dumbed down, lowest common denominator twaddle we see today to all of this innovation? My guess is that anyone who discounts all of that quality (and no, not everything was good) simply has a bias against anything that has a tint of 'history' about it...rotary phones, big sedans, no internet, beehive hairdos, etc.
My favorite 60's shows?
In no order,
Batman
Gilligan's Island
Munsters
Addams Family
Gunsmoke
Star Trek
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Bewitched
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits
MickeyMac 01-12-2013, 04:45 PM Good TV is timeless. Thats why a good portion of the 1960's TV shows still are watchable today, and will be in the future.
Regulus 01-12-2013, 04:57 PM When Cable TV came to my town in 1980 I was like an eight-year-old on Christmas Morning. Oh Boy! ALL MINE!!! If I only knew what I was getting myself into. For the first 10 years life was good, then I began noticing things going downhill. It wasn't bad at first, but in 2000 things REALLY began going downhill, with commercials increasing to a point BEYOND Insanity and the onset of that malignancy known as "Unscripted" Programming , while fees did nothing but climb, climb, climb. In 2004 I began questioning WHY was I paying for all this "stuff", two years later I decided enough was enough, and decided to seek my entertainment elsewhere. Tonight I will recreate my childhood by watching animated programming that used to dominate Saturday Mornings, and I won't have to cope with Insurance, Medical or any other form of advertising. :angryfire: I'm not saying I've achieved perfection, but I have a system, and it works. :D
TVFactFan 01-12-2013, 05:05 PM Good TV is timeless. Thats why a good portion of the 1960's TV shows still are watchable today, and will be in the future.
They are watchable today because they air at all times of the day not just from 8pm to 11pm during Monday to Friday.
Dr. Loveless 01-14-2013, 04:36 PM The 1960s were a rich TV bounty, in my opinion, especially for drama and adventure series. Some shows were entirely excellent, others were flawed, but still very entertaining. Here are some of my faves:
THE FUGITIVE
THE ADDAMS FAMILY
THE AVENGERS
RAWHIDE
THE PRISONER
THE WILD WILD WEST
T.H.E. CAT
THE UNTOUCHABLES
THE OUTER LIMITS
THRILLER
THE TWILIGHT ZONE
STAR TREK
THE ADVENTURES OF JONNY QUEST
BATMAN
THE INVADERS
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE
THE WESTERNER
THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR
DANGER MAN/SECRET AGENT
DRAGNET (color version)
LAND OF THE GIANTS
ROUTE 66
LOST IN SPACE
THE RAT PATROL
MAN IN A SUITCASE
PASSWORD
ROGER RAMJET
THE BULLWINKLE SHOW
BEANY & CECIL
GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE
THUNDERBIRDS
STINGRAY
CAPTAIN SCARLET & THE MYSTERONS
SPEED RACER
ULTRAMAN
MUTUAL OF OMAHA'S WILD KINGDOM
Mr. Television 01-14-2013, 08:37 PM It's funny, in a sort of perverse way, but in the 1960s with only three networks, there still seemed to be more of a variety in program fare... sitcoms, westerns, doctor shows, crime and detective, sci-fi, anthology, variety shows, jungle adventure, war shows, lawyer shows, musicals, spy/espionage, etc.
I agree. Today's shows don't come close to the variety of shows you had then. You didn't have a network using 4-5 hours a week showing one reality show.
Crusinforabrusin 01-10-2016, 10:37 PM The 60s easily win:
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Munsters
The Many Lives Of Dobir Gillis
Leave It To Beaver
Family Affair
The Big Valley
Gilligan's Island
Dennis The Menace
Car 54, Where Are You?
Bewitched
I Dream Of Jeannie
The Beverly Hillbillies
Mr Ed.
There are so many good shows from this decade!
OH Nuts! 01-10-2016, 10:42 PM Absolutely. Here are more than four I really like:
Bewitched
Gidget
The Patty Duke Show
The Munsters
The Big Valley
Bonanza
The Lucy Show
Here's Lucy
And more!
I think all those shows from the 60's did well because
1. That's all everyone had back then
2. No cable
3. No Internet
Conversation in 1960's households:
Husband: What do you want to do tonight?
Wife: I don't know. What do you want to do?
Husband: Wanna watch some cable TV? HBO? ESPN?
Wife: Can't. Hasn't been invented yet.
Husband: We could go online. Check out some YouTube.
Wife: Nope.Doesn't exist.
Husband: We could watch The Dick Van Dyke show.
Wife: I guess. It's all we have.
Regulus 01-10-2016, 11:24 PM I agree. Today's shows don't come close to the variety of shows you had then. You didn't have a network using 4-5 hours a week showing one reality show.
:angryfire SECONDED! :angryfire
Dianne3 01-15-2016, 06:26 PM I haven't seen a lot of the 60's shows.
For the most part, the only 60's shows I have seen are the more well known comedies.
Since September, I have been watching the drama Ironside for the first time.
The first couple of years which took place in the late 1960's, I really enjoyed the show. Now, that the episodes are in the 1970's, some of them I find boring.
There is this former actress, Barbara Anderson, who up until last year when I saw her on a Marcus Welby episode, I never heard of her.
It looks like actors/actresses from comedies in the 1960's are more known today than those in drama's.
I also agree that 1960's TV is way better than the reality crap of today.
