View Full Version : 2012...Year in review
MrCleveland 12-28-2012, 01:40 PM 2012 is about to end and I have one word...GOOD!
This year was unfair to me. I got into 2 car accidents, my computer crapped-out on me, I got mad at someone which almost made me lose my job, my Summer wasn't memorable, and i'm without someone to ring-in 2013. ohno:ohno:ohno:ohno:ohno:
So i'll have to say the Cleveland motto..."There's always next year"!
How did your 2012 go?
gilligan fanatic 12-28-2012, 07:39 PM Meh, not the best, not the worst.
Came back from Antarctica in March but really haven't done much since then. I am really sick of my current job so hopefuly I get a better one in 2013. Nothing really bad happened to me this year, but 2011 was easily a much better year for me.
In a perfect world it would be nice to get a better job where I meet the perfect girl and move out of my parents house. Until I accomplish any of those three it will just be another meh year for me.
Furienna 12-28-2012, 08:06 PM I finally got a niece, but only ten hours later, our father passed away. So yeah, 2012 has been one heck of a year for our family.
USATVFAN 12-28-2012, 10:01 PM Been an Interesting Year, Some Ups and Downs. It was mostly a Good Year for the most part. Some Happy and sad times.
My Aunt Got Colon Cancer back in March and she continues to fight it Daily. It has spread trough out her body. She has had surgery and countless rounds of Chemo. Of course she has Good and Bad days. She was told by Doctors back in November that she has a least two Years and that now it a matter of trying to prolong her life then trying tom cure it. But I pray everyday and remain Hopeful and Optimistic that she will live for many... many more Years! It been interesting(Best word I can think of at the moment) watching her go through this Journey.
On the Bight Side My Brother got married back in August to a Very Nice lady.
I work at Hickory Farms for the past Month which i had a f time doing.
Smilings 12-29-2012, 11:45 PM Gilligan Fanatic, I'm impressed.
My blah years don't include anything as interesting as Antarctica.
March is the start of their winter. I hear it's cold.
If it's not too personal, what were you doing at the South Pole?
And in 2013, good luck on the job, the place to stay and the girl.
Furienna 12-30-2012, 01:40 PM Yeah, going to Antarctica sounds really interesting.
RoryGilmore 12-30-2012, 02:31 PM 2012 was an excellent year and 2013 is only going to be better
The Flying Dutchmans 12-30-2012, 04:56 PM It was the best of times? It was the worst of times.
One of my nieces, who waited till she was 38 to have kids, had twins. 1 boy and 1 girl, but she lost her husband to a brain tumor 2 months before they were born. She was so saddened for that time before the kids were born, but now that they are here, they are helping her deal with it better.
I lost a job I was working for 4 years, but that is not really a bad thing considering I couldn't stand the owner.
I found a better paying job, 1 month later and have been driving all over the country since then. This is a good thing, except during the cold snowy winter, which is now.
I wrote a book, which is finally finished after 8 years and it will be released in May 2013.
I guess all in all, it was a good year for me. But I am hoping 2013 holds more for me. I believe this is my year to get what I have been wanting for many years. And that's to own my own house.
Smilings 12-30-2012, 05:05 PM Flying Dutchman, congratulations on your book.
what's it about?
When and where is it available?
Furienna 12-31-2012, 06:07 AM I'm trying to complete a book as well, but somehow, I haven't gotten around to work on it since before Christmas. But I still have a week left of my Christmas vacation, so I hope I'll find some time to do something about it.
MickeyMac 12-31-2012, 02:32 PM Not the best year for me. Some setbacks, but despite that I am blessed and thankful to see another year.

I actually wasn't at the South Pole, I was at McMurdo Station which is about 6 hours from the pole.
I worked in the supply department. Here is a thread I have from earlier in the year that answers some questions and has a few pictures. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=291644
treky 01-01-2013, 02:01 AM my year was also so-so. I had a small stroke back in Feb. and spent 3 months recovering but other than that it's been just meh.
JamesG 01-01-2013, 02:06 AM With the exception of Hurricane Sandy and my grandmother dying on December 1st, I had a pretty good year otherwise.

Thanks for the link to the thread with your Antarctica pictures. It must have been a fantastic once in a lifetime experience. By the way, nice addition of the Terrible Towel in your room. Go Steelers (well, in 2013)!

To risk a pun, Antarctica is cool!
And a long way from the Gilligan lagoon.
What TV do they have down there?
I imagine even satellite reception is hard because satellites' orbit is around the equator not the poles.
What internet do they have?
How isolated were you?
Thanks.

Oh it was awesome, I hope I get to go again!.
Yeah, there is always next year for the Steelers.

We got about 5 channels, two were from NZ and 3 were Armed Forces Networks. They also had a channel where they showed movies and an information channel.
They came in decently, one channel only came in at night. We really didn't watch too much TV though.
The internet was normal internet, but no wi-fi when we were there. They turn on the wi-fi in the winter when there is less people. It was pretty slow, but faster than dial up.
Where I was at in McMurdo there was about 1000 people at the peak so I wasn't isolated in that respect. Christchurch NZ where we left from was a 5 hour plane ride so we were far from that. If I had been at a field camp I would have been real isolated. Some of the field camps only have about twenty people or so.
Smilings 01-02-2013, 08:35 PM Wow! 5 hour flight to NZ? That's almost a coast to coast flight in the States.
My favorite non-penguin cartoon or documentary movies about the frozen pole area is 8 Below about the stranded dogs on their own.
Whiteout where Kate Beckinsale investigates a murder.
And my all time favorite is The Thing 1952. (but that's the Arctic not Antarctic)

We watched Whiteout when we were down there and we were making fun of it the entire time because of how unrealistic it was. It starts out showing how the terain is around the station, it is completly flat in real life. And that shower scene is hot and all but at the pole they were only allowed three, 1 minute long showers a week, it was someones job to turn the water on and off. Where I was at in McMurdo we weren't limited like that but they didn't want us abusing the water either.
I got 8 Below free from Disney Movie Rewards but I haven't watched it yet, I just might have to.
One neat movie that shows a lot of what I saw, (the town, happy camper, some of the people) is called Encounters at the End of the World (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1093824/) The science stuff is pretty boring though.
Another real neat one is called With Byrd at the South Pole (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A-R9PysOaxI) this was made in 1930
Smilings 01-03-2013, 03:21 PM Whiteout. I suspected it was unrealistic. Hollywood does that.
It's like I always loved submarine movies from 20,000 Leagues Under Sea to Voyage to the Bottom of the Ocean. So I jumped a chance when my cousin became skipper of one of the Navy's top nuclear submarines and gave a tour.
I was shocked when I saw his quarters. The top guy on the boat. It was size of a small walk-in closet or a tiny Winnebago.
But the food on submarines, in contrast to the grub I had when I was in the Army, was excellent. Gourmet quality.
My local library has Encounters at the End of the World, so I will check it out.
Thanks for the suggestion.
