View Full Version : Sitcoms Where Characters Land In Court
McGillicuddy 12-09-2012, 08:35 PM It seems with any long running sit-com, a character or characters end up in court for one reason or another, at some point.
I Love Lucy - The Ricardos and The Mertzes end up in the courtroom over a television set.
duckie 12-09-2012, 08:51 PM Roger on Whats Happening went to court after, as Rerun said, was creamed by a driver coming out of an alley. lol
Regulus 12-09-2012, 09:10 PM There was an episode of The Brady Bunch where they get sued after they are in a fender-bender.
I recall an episode of The Partridge Family in which they got sued as well.
robyrob 12-09-2012, 09:31 PM on Happy Days the Fonz and Howard Cunningham ended up in court twice - once on the jury and once as plaintiffs against each other when the roof over the garage collapsed either due to the weight of Fonzie's bird house, or the combination of snow and the state of poor repair that Howard had let it get to.
also on Happy Days, Marion had to go to court after her car smashed through the wall at Arnold's - she couldn't pay the fine so she opted to go to jail.
JamesG 12-09-2012, 10:07 PM "Diff'rent Strokes" with Arnold taking a toy shop owner to small-claims court over failure to refund a broken train engine.
PrettyinPink55 12-09-2012, 11:00 PM The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air- Uncle Phil takes Will and Carlton to court over rent issues.
Sanford and Son- Lamont goes to traffic court to dispute a traffic ticket.
The Golden Girls- Stan and Dorothy go to court for being "slumlords."
Vahan 12-09-2012, 11:07 PM Mr. Belvedere had one where Mr. B almost got deported permanently, because he wasn't a U.S. citizen. He had no green card.

And in a later episode, Mr. Drysdale lands in court in Hooterville after driving the truck with a drunken bear...!
The Dick Van Dyke Show - In one episode, the Petries take a pillow manufacturer to court. In another, Rob is on jury duty.
robyrob 12-10-2012, 09:43 AM on Too Close for Comfort , Henry (Ted Knight) is on the jury and falls asleep during the middle of testimony - when the jury is passing around a note as evidence of what the defendant said or did to the victim Henry thinks its from the person on the jury next to him, hijinks ensue.
duckie 12-10-2012, 12:28 PM On the Andy Griffith show, Aunt Bee is selected for jury duty and saves a man who was accused of breaking into a store, and stealing a tv and several other things.

Sanford and Son- Lamont goes to traffic court to dispute a traffic ticket.
The Golden Girls- Stan and Dorothy go to court for being "slumlords."
That Sanford episode is one of my top 10 favorite episodes of any sitcom ever.
biffbronson 12-10-2012, 09:09 PM On Petticoat Junction, Kate Bradley has jury duty, and Uncle Joe slips a paper note into her hamburger...! In another episode, the Shady Rest Hotel becomes the temporary home to a big group jurors, all of whom enjoy the great food there.

treky 12-11-2012, 01:58 AM on THE LUCY-DESI COMEDY HOUR once, in a crossover episode with the Williams family from THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW (which ironically had taken over the I LOVE LUCY slot of Mondays at 9) the Ricardos take the WILLIAMS' to court-I forget what for.
On THE ODD COUPLE once, Oscar and Felix went to court once when they were arrested for ticket scalping.
On MY NAME IS EARL once, Joy went to court for stealing a truck.
biffbronson 12-11-2012, 06:49 AM Green Acres: Fred & Doris Ziffel take Eustice Haney to court, with Oliver Douglas as attorney for the plaintiffs. Oliver has other court-related episodes as well.
Fred hardly wants to give Oliver $4 for his services; Oliver had asked for a very reasonable $25 or so.
Penny Lane 12-11-2012, 03:32 PM i think that almost every sitcom had a "court" episode! On Mama's Family Mama and Naomi had a battle over a broken vacuum cleaner.

treky 12-13-2012, 03:03 AM there was an I LOVE LUCY episode where the Ricardos took the Mertzes to court over a new TV that the Mertzes had given them and then (I think) Fred broke it. No, that's right-Fred broke their current TV.

I guess not everyone's as lucky, right? ;)
I loved being a 90s kid and I loved Nickelodeon and I loved Kenan and Kel!! I remember the episode you are talking about :)
The current state of Nickelodeon is a shame. :( But the one bright spot is watching "The 90s Are All That" on Teen Nick!!! Takes me back!!! :p ;) I just wish they'd make that segment on Teen Nick an entire separate network already!! I would probably never leave the house!!! ;)
McGillicuddy 12-16-2012, 07:59 PM Hazel - Hazel ends up in court for defacing public property. What she actually did was, take it upon herself to paint a crosswalk at a busy intersection, because the city wouldn't do it.
