They should make a continuation of the series focusing on mike and gloria's grandson joey stivic following the footsteps of his late grandfather archie bunker, that would be interesting.

They tried something like that in 704 Hauser Street (1994), where Joey Stivic was a "guest" in the Cumberbatche's house. The problem is that when you continue on with a storyline, it doesn't hold the audience's interest for long. This is also why "The Sanford Arms" failed miserably after "Sanford and Son," and why 704 Hauser Street did so poorly.

If or when a series becomes successful enough to keep generating new momentum, that series will make an impression on people that will in turn cause them to talk about it to their friends, and so forth. But once it loses its luster, and hard changes come to the show, interest falls away and it becomes stale. That is one of the reasons why Archie Bunker's Place never does well in syndication. To people who hold it to the standards of "All in the Family," it appears as though the series begins on a "quarter tank of gas" and by the end of that series (after Edith dying and incorporating new characters into the show), it runs on "fumes." From there, any new addition is pretty much "raising the dead."

What if there was a new version of All in the Family? Archie would be a teabag conservative who has Fox News on all day, and Mike would be a member of the Occupy Wall Street movement!

It would never work again. That ship has sailed, unfortunately. I'm a huge fan of the show but the actors associated with it are so inextricably linked to it (and deservedly so) that any attempt to "reboot" would be unsuccessful, in my mind.

What they SHOULD have done was to have a proper finale back when everyone was still with us. ABP went off the air in 1983, and Carroll O'Connor died in 2001, so they had eighteen years to do something and they blew it. Sad as it makes me, the show really can only be enjoyed in reruns now.

Very well said. :)

I would be interested in watching 704 Hauser Street just for the heck of it though. :)

I actually liked the one episode I saw of 704 Hauser Street. I can't see how it would have lasted very long, though. What I did like about it was that it kind of referenced the show, but wasn't 'remaking' it.

From what I've read, it sounds like an interesting concept.

They basically have already revived it. Right now, Tim Allen's Last Man Standing (in it's second season on ABC) has drastically changed the show with re-casting and openly pursuing a format very similar to All in the Family. Quite frankly, it's gone over like a turd in a punch bowl with the fans and critics. It's immediately evident that having an Archie Bunker-type as the main character of a sitcom in the year 2012 is quite off-putting. Any continuation or direct revival of the original series would most likely be just as crappy.

I remember reading in TV Guide where Norman Lear wanted to do a one -- time special with Archie Bunker working at a car rental service . I'd rather remember Archie Bunker the way he was when we last saw him -- making a good living running "Archie Bunker's Place" .

If he sold his house at 704 Hauser Street to Ernie Cumberbatch, he should be living in a nice apartment . I imagine his nieces, Barbara Lee "Billie" Bunker and Stephanie Mills, would still be living nearby and helping out at his bar every so often . That said, there should have been a fitting farewell for Archie Bunker .

I haven't seen Last Man Standing yet. I was really rooting for Tim Allen to come back strong into primetime after Home Improvement, and excited when I first heard he was coming back with a new show, but then I heard some not so great reviews for the show and decided to skip it.

I don't like that they killed Edith off in the end. I know that Jean Stapleton didn't want to continue on with the show, but I think they should've ended it with her happy and healthy with Archie and Stephanie.
I don't like how Gloria and The Meathead separated either, but that's another story!!

The show last season was a cute little family-oriented sitcom. Nothing too groundbreaking, but it was a fairly solid show. It was definitely nice to see Tim Allen return to sitcoms. Over the summer they just couldn't leave well enough alone and made some awful cast changes and all of a sudden Tim Allen is spouting off the same anachronistic old-world ideals as Archie, complete with a son-in-law to clash with. Only he's a fairly wealthy white male sitting in an ivory tower to the effect of "hey you kids, get off my lawn." Long story short, the show went from good to almost unbearable and you're not missing anything if you tune in now. Last week I cancelled it from the DVR.

How sad that they ruined it like that. :( I wonder what motivated them to change the show's direction like that?

After last season, the showrunner Kevin Abbott left Last Man Standing to do Reba's new sitcom Malibu Country (which BTW is definitely worse than her last show). In his stead, Tim Doyle was brought on as the new showrunner and that's when they decided to retcon it into oblivion. Seems like within weeks he had fired the eldest daughter, made her infant son into a 6 year-old, bumped up the baby daddy from a one-episode guest shot in the first season to a permanent fixture, and Tim Allen gives interviews stating he wants the show to be "more like All in the Family" I believe were his words. Last month Kevin Abbott returned to the show full-time but it's gotten more and more steeped into this tragically un-cool format. Possibly any episodes produced since then haven't aired yet so I'll check back sometime after the new year.

I'm not really a fan of All in the Family, but I respect it and acknowledge it's achievements. From my point of view, it was spot-on with the changing times in America and the cast reflected quite a large portion of the population. In Last Man Standing, Tim Allen is playing a rather rich white dude who makes money by vlogging for a living - a rather tiny segment of the population. Last season the show could be appropriately topical as it addressed the changing role of the American male (hence the show title). In my mind it was already in tune with country in it's own subtle regard. Meanwhile the last episode I saw had some ridiculous plot involving a whole junior high school politically-oriented enough to rail against fracking. Fracking??? On a sitcom???? What's next, a grade school protesting tax increases on the wealthy?

Oh wow!! Those are some major changes!! I don't like when they spontaneously and instantaneously age children on sitcoms and don't explain or address it. 1-2 years aging is fine, but from an infant to a 6 year-old...that's just too radical of a change. Not sure how important or big of a plot line that is, but even small show inconsistencies like that bother me. From the previews, Reba's show looked funny, but it also seemed similar to her other sitcom, Reba.

It would take some big shoes to be like All in the Family. That was a different time and place. You are right, from what you've told me, Tim Allen's character doesn't quite seem to represent today's zeitgeist.

Back to the idea of a revival. It wouldn't work most likely. And Last Man Standing is almost nothing like All in the Family. If you want a proper Archie Farewell, write about on here or on Fanfiction.net.

I loved the first season of LMS. They completely ruined the show. It wasn't broke and there was no need to fix it.

I watched all the episodes of 704 Hauser. I think there was only about 5. I thought it was pretty good.
