View Full Version : Why have the actual "Unsolved Mysteries" never been released on DVD?

Why have the UM episodes which actually deal with "Unsolved Mysteries"--Like the Sharon Marshall case, the Angela Hammond case--basically the cases of kidnappings, murders, disappearances etc which remain unsolved--never been released on DVD? These, IMO, are the most relevant episodes since they still haven't been solved, they also tend to be the scariest and creepiest (as many of them came before UM changed it's music and format), which was one of the show's biggest draws. I'll never understand why all of the lesser episodes about hokey subjects--the ghost shows etc--are available on DVD but the shows about the actual, still Unsolved Mysteries aren't.

Good question, but the question I have is why you're using the same screen name as me.

Sorry. It's just a name that came to me, I didn't realize we share a name, also '90's my birth year hence the name.

Tell me about it. I don't know whether to be upset, worried or flattered.

This in itself is yet another unsolved mystery.

Maybe some poster has the answer. Maybe it's you.

Bahaha, that's my birth year as well :)

I can understand why it was decided to release the show by category, but it is a bummer. I remember watching original airings and loving the mix and mesh of all the different types of stories.

If not on DVD, then why not Amazon or iTunes?

I've often asked myself the same question. Interestingly enough some of the other DVD sets came with updates so that is a possibility too. Like themainblack said it must be money or time that is a hold up.

It is very rewarding to see a lot of the cold cases solved and likely more to come!

Cue the equally creepy and gay Unsolved Mystery theme from the Farina episodes

It's crazy how music sets the theme. the music during the segments went from uh oh something bad is about to happen to......sweet something good is about to happen. At least those are my thoughts.

They're probably not on dvd because of low demand. Anything like this has to be produced and then mastered and then pressed and shipped to stores. It's extremely time consuming and expensive. The dvd sets they did put out had 5.1 audio, which would require some expensive audio sessions. I'd love to have all the segments they ever did, but I think the only other people who want that are visitors to this forum. It's unlikely there would be much owed to the Robert Stack estate. At the time his deal was signed, home video residuals were probably not part of it. I don't know how SAG/AFTRA residuals would work or if the field directors and writers would be owed anything. Having them available digitally would be the answer at this point. It's too bad. I loved listening to the commentaries on the dvds that are available. Also, the show isn't owned by a major studio that would do anything with it. If it would have been Warner Bros, we could have possibly seen it as part of the Warner Archive collection.

I think the easiest and cheapest thing for them to do would be to set up a youtube channel with all of the segments on there.

I completely agree with you but for some odd reason, they don't want to do that.

It's probably a combination of factors. Shows made before the age of dvds and putting every single tv show ever on DVD and/or streaming media tend to have complicated rights contracts. I wouldn't be surprised if they'd have to get permission from the people involved in the cases as well. So much time has passed they might object to the UM-version of events now that they have made peace with what happened to their loved one - they might want ALL information presented now, even if their son was a drug dealer.

They'd also have to come up with a new tip line and update all the stories just as a matter of dealing with people contacting them/the company hosting the episodes and saying "hey I think I know that guy" when it's a case that's been solved. I could honestly (easily) see a company passing on the show just because of the potential nightmare of dealing with tips. And it'll cost money to edit out the references to the old phone number and tip line and put in the new information.

Sigh.

That said, I'd LOVE to see the series on Netflix. :D

I just want them to make a YouTube channel and upload all 553 episodes on there.

There are episodes that are impossible to find! I would love to watch the Charles Southern case which I haven't seen in over a decade as a young child. I think it's lucky that as many episodes are as available out there as it is, thanks to a bunch of fans who happened to use their VCRs and put them to good use ;) I wish Cosgrove/Meurer would put them up for entertainment and for the best altruistic reason of all: The chances of getting the unsolved ones solved.

I am pretty sure you can find all of those on the video site :) I'm surprised those aren't the rarer ones. How could the awesome people who recorded these episodes have ever known they would be doing other people a favor so many years later
