View Full Version : Some Of These Commercials on TV Land Kill the Mood
JamesG 11-22-2012, 05:10 PM I was watching some of the "I Love Lucy" TV Land marathon with my father early this afternoon and then a commercial for a catheter came right on.
So we go from laughing at "Lucy" to some old guy going, "I have a new, painless catheter that I want to tell you all about," and then it shows pictures on how it works.
My dad and I were laughing at this too, but I'm thinking what is this doing on here? I don't watch TV Land that often so I don't know how long this has been going on. Talk about buzz-kill.
Coffeecup 11-22-2012, 08:06 PM It's not just TVLAND, it is all the stations. I see Pat Boone talking about walk in tubs, his daughter for Life style lifts, and more medical type stuff than ever. What ever happened to the coffee, toothpaste, shampoo, cereal ads I used to see in the 1970's??
UMFaninMD 11-23-2012, 12:25 AM Now there are these extra-long commercials for Humana Medicare Advantage plans. The first time I saw one, I thought the channel decided to start running an infomericial. I'd say 95% of the commercials they show, especially during the daytime, are all medical/health products, most of which are questionable anyway.
PrettyinPink55 11-23-2012, 11:36 AM This happens a lot on Antenna TV and Me TV too. It pretty much does kill the mood. ohno: Especially when you're eating while watching TV!!! ohno:
yankeesrj12 11-23-2012, 02:51 PM Well they are targeting the audience.
It's like when I watch The Price is Right; all of the products on commercials are for old people.
Coffeecup 11-23-2012, 07:33 PM I feel sorry for the young teens. It must be tough seeing what older life may bring.
Regulus 11-23-2012, 08:13 PM This is why I shun both Commercial and Pay-TV. I find these kinds of commercials to be Extremely :angryfire Offensive :angryfire. Unfortunately, because the MAJORITY of people find these kinds of commercials offensive, the Advertisers hide behind the Constitution and claim they have a "Right' to air these kinds of ads. But let an ad offend a MINORITY, and the ad will be withdrawn without hesitation.
Holy Hypocrisy, Batman!
visaman666 11-23-2012, 10:09 PM It's not just TVLAND, it is all the stations.
And that's the way ME likes it!:D
TVFactFan 11-23-2012, 11:53 PM I don't know what to think about a cancer commercial hoping someone has cancer so they can make money
I refuse to look at anymore cancer commercials
The only time I don't have to worry about seeing cancer commercials is when I watch football on sundays
Coffeecup 11-24-2012, 01:06 PM I don't mind the Cancer Treatment of America commercials. Well I do but if the commercial helps someone, I am all for seeing it. I could be ill. Then again does the treatment center help?. I hope so. Now a days ,you, the consumer finds info from commercials. Years ago, your doctor told you.
LUNCH 11-24-2012, 02:54 PM It's the same old story really.De-regulation/no more controls of TV advertising on American television is to blame. All these types of commercials used to be banned.--And I can almost guarantee you would never see those types of commercials in Canada,Western Europe and so on where TV advertising is still controlled.

The cancer commercials kills the mood you are in when watching a TV show and should be banned from TV
Those centers should be advertised in magazines or online

There is absolutely no reason to regulate commercials.

It is very difficult for many to watch cancer commercials after just laughing at a comedy.
Those commercials should be banned

^^^ That is very true. Imagine a poor, unfortunate cancer victim who is trying to escape the knowledge that he is dying. He is sad, desperate and frightened. He needs to cheer up if only for a few moments. So he turns on a comedy tv station so he can get a little chuckle of I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, Good Times, The Jeffersons or The Honeymooners. In a few short moments, the cancer victim is feeling a bit better. He is smiling and laughing...forgetting about his troubles and his fears. He is happy for the first time in a very long time. It's a hysterical episode.
Whooops....commercial time.
"Hi, I'm Jane from the so and so cancer facility in Anytown, USA. Here, we......"
The cancer victim is sad again and turns off his television.

Why? I'm just curious. Controlling the amount and content of TV commercials worked great for many years.

You have a point there. I remember when my mom was dying and on the cover of Time magazine was a story on Cancer. I just couldn't bring it to her to read. Years ago the subject was talked about in the Doctors office and there you would have help, now it is everywhere

I know a Psychiatrist (Who treats patients for, among other things, DEPRESSION) who's waiting room has one of those monitors that set to CNN. One of these days a patient, who is waiting to see him, will catch a really depressing news story while waiting, and that will too much for him or her. That patient will run out of the office, and upon reaching the street will dive into oncoming traffic. The next of kin will surly have a field day with that one!

The television industry is its own thing. Government interference would only ruin it. The less government, the better.

What I would like to see is to have the "V-Chip" Law (Signed into law by President Clinton) AMENDED so that it INCLUDES COMMERCIALS. Commercials such as the ones already mentioned on this thread would get higher ratings such as "TV-14 or TV-MA" and those who don't desire to watch them (Or who don't want their children to see them), could block them out. With today's technology, the Sets (Or External Box) could be made "Addressable" and setting it to a lower level (Such as TV-Y or TV-G) would result in a Commercial with that rating. It's a Win-Win for the advertisers, as some kind of commercials would be seen by the viewer, and who knows, they might find that airing certain commercials is a waste of time and money, as most people opt to block them.
PrettyinPink55 11-26-2012, 01:06 AM Like those damn ED commercials when I'm trying to freaking watch the evening news!!! I don't think that's at all appropriate!!!
*ROGER* 11-28-2012, 03:48 AM "Buy five hour energy pink lemonade. And you can help others along the way.
A portion of every bottle that they sell goes to fight breast cancer, and I think that's swell.
The more you take, the more they pay. So make them write a big check today.
And if you're feeling a little slow, five hour energy will help you go.
So buy a bottle of pink lemonade. And you can help fight breast cancer today."
I really, really HATE that song! puke: puke: puke: puke:
Commercials/commercial content doesn't bother me, but I have not watched anything on TV Land in ages (I enjoy 'Raymond', '70s Show', 'Lucy', 'Andy Griffith', 'Beaver') due to the extra 5 minutes of commercials many times compared to other non-Viacom networks (off the clock schedules with shows running 35 minutes) AND more extensive editing. Insane. Not only does TV Land seem to hack more off of its shows than most other networks, but they also air 5 minutes more of commercials many times of the day.
TV Land seems to be, IMO, one of the most disrespectful channels to its shows that there is. Nick at Nite and Spike, both Viacom, are becoming just as bad.
