View Full Version : Matt Lauer's "Today" brand: Damaged?

That's what one former NBC News exec says, anonymously: "This problem is not going to go away until Matt Lauer does. He’s great, but fairly or unfairly, his brand is damaged."

Deputy at ‘Today’ Show Is Promoted to Executive Producer
By BRIAN STELTER
Don Nash, a 23-year veteran of the “Today” show, will become its executive producer, NBC News said on Wednesday.
The announcement, which was made at a staff meeting, put an end to widespread speculation about a leadership change at the beleaguered morning show, which lost in the ratings to ABC’s “Good Morning America” this year for the first time since the mid-1990s. Mr. Nash will replace Jim Bell and will report to Alexandra Wallace, who will be the new executive in charge of “Today.”
The New York Times reported this week that Ms. Wallace would be installed atop the show.
At the staff meeting on Wednesday, the NBC News president, Steve Capus, described Mr. Nash as the day-to-day producer of the show and Ms. Wallace as the person with “front office” responsibility for it. The arrangement mimics one that was put in place in 2005. Back then, Mr. Bell was the executive producer and an MSNBC executive, Phil Griffin, was the executive in charge.
The new leadership team will take charge on Dec. 1. Mr. Bell, who had a second job this year as the executive producer of NBCUniversal’s Olympics coverage, will move into that role full time.
Mr. Nash, a former NBC page who has been Mr. Bell’s top deputy since 2005, is widely liked among the rank and file at “Today.” He has run the show in Mr. Bell’s absence before, including for a long stretch this summer before and during the Olympics.
“It is impossible to get bored on this show,” he said in a telephone interview, explaining his affection for the morning format.
He dropped no hints on Wednesday about what changes would be in store for “Today,” which fell behind “Good Morning America” in the ratings for the first time in April and slid further after the co-host Ann Curry was replaced by Savannah Guthrie in June. But, he said, “We are constantly changing and constantly looking for new ideas.”
NBC confirmed on Wednesday that Ms. Wallace, along with her “Today” show responsibilities, would remain the executive producer of “Rock Center With Brian Williams,” the prime-time news magazine that started last year.

I see that story before, she was promoted so they will have a reason to get to get rid of her if the show continues ton fail

What are you talking about??? GMA is the best!!!
They are warm, sweet, light-hearted, and fun!!! The co-hosts have great chemistry with one another!! You get the sense that they truly care about each other on and off camera. They don't take themselves too seriously. If that's goofy, then I'll take my breakfast with goofy in the morning!!
I miss Robin Roberts though, and wish her a speedy recovery!!!

Solomon watches once and makes judgments based on a few minutes. Don't mind him. And I am by GMA every morning. They have great chemistry indeed. Even off camera they are talking. Josh is always going to the crowd to take pics with the crowd. All of them do really.
Lara is stunning in person. Wow. No one looks greater than her on Today.

I am with you on this one Solomon! No one look better then Natalie not even Lara who doesn't even come close! Natalie is the most Beuatiful women on NBC and on News I think. TODAY Show have much better looking Women's on their show then GMA, And they are smart as well and don't act like High School Kids. Robin is the only Smart Intelligent person on that show and George is way to serious and not funny. Most peoples agree that Lara is very Dumb! even the most loyal GMA fans have said that as well and do not think she fit on the show.
Matt, Willie and Al are funnier then both Josh and George. No one can beat Matt Lauer except for Charlie Gibson. Matt is the best Morning show host in my opinion. He is funny and He is a Good Interview granted he is not the same Matt that we grew to like 15 Years ago but he is still better and the best in the Morning. Al is funny and the same old Al we grew to like years and years ago. Savannah and Natalie are more then just a piece of Eyes Candy, They are both smart and Good interviewers. Have you ever seen Savannah get tough on a politician or a Lawyer? She has really grown into the role and I like her and Natalie as well. They all have their Flaws like GMA (Including Robin!) but they are still better. Willie is Funny and is a Good Interviewer and he does not take himself to serious like George to Josh.
I would rather watch TODAY Show over GMA anyday. They have fun and can laugh at themselves, They are more Human. They have Good chemistry and lot of Energy especially now with Willie Geist! The only time I ever watch GMA is when Katie Couric is on!
We all know that Paven hates all of NBC with a passion...

howierules86 11-15-2012, 10:45 PM The first three hours of Today are still my usual go-to morning show right now. I always love my daily dose of Natalie Morales and/or Savannah Guthrie in the morning (even if one of them has a day off for whatever reason from time to time).
Pavan 11-16-2012, 12:40 AM We all know that Paven hates all of NBC with a passion...
That's funny since I'm in the NBC building everyday...
And as for Today vs. GMA battle, you kept saying Today would take over the ratings after the Olympics were over, but that didn't happen. We all have our opinions, but you said it yourself that you don't watch GMA at all except for one Couric is on, so how would you know how GMA is everyday? I watch both. Even people inside at NBC think Today is horrendous right now (hence all the behind the scene changes...). And the atmosphere outside the Today show is not energetic as it used to be all on regular days compared to what is going on outside the GMA studios everyday (better crowds, more talk, etc). And yep, I am by each show every morning. It's fine you like Today better, but don't knock GMA because clearly they are doing better in the ratings and people are talking about it much more. Today had their 15 years and they are not what they used to be at all.
catlover79 11-16-2012, 12:52 PM After the whole Ann Curry mess, I just started watching one of the local Cleveland morning shows instead.

What was crazy was Matt still trying to kiss Ann goodbye when he was responsible for her leaving
That's like finding out someone at your job played a role in you getting laid off and then you see them coming toward you wanting to hug you goodbye and give you a kiss:lol:

*high five*
GMA seems more genuine to me. The co-hosts genuinely seem to like and support each other on and off camera. They have great chemistry!!
I think the fourth hour of The Today Show is just a joke and fodder for Joel McHale on The Soup!!
And seriously Solomon, Elisabeth Hasselback?? You'd rather have HER??   Have you heard her talk???
I like Elisabeth, don't get me wrong, but when she opens her mouth to speak on The View, I'm always prepared for the worst!!

Hey, Sol had a thing for Katie Couric's legs back in the day. I think it's safe to say that he is a leg man.
Is Lauer the new Deborah Norville (http://www.theatlanticwire.com/entertainment/2012/11/nbc-still-resents-you-resenting-matt-lauer-so-much/59300/)?

A few viewers were particularly annoyed by Lauer's beard.

simmytbone 02-21-2014, 04:54 AM The only good thing about The Today Show, IMO is Weekend Today
Lester Holt does a great job @ least he's not egotistical like Matt Lauer and I love me some Erica Hill
I'll take Erica over the current ladies on The Today Show, especially over that egomaniac Kathie Lee Gifford
I also like Jenna Wolfe & Dylan Dreyer

Who is awake to see the Weekend today if you don't have to work?

yeah the weird part was when matt said they may throw her out of a couple of planes lol
UMFaninMD 02-23-2014, 02:38 PM I really like Lester Holt and and Ann Curry. I can't stand Matt Lauer. He's the white Bryant Gumbel. I wish NBC would drop him.
However, I have to be at work by 7:45 so I'm never at home to watch weekday morning TV unless I'm off for holidays, bad weather or sickness. That could be a blessing in disguise. :D

Here's how I'd rank some of the TV women based on how much I'd want to get them in the sack -- which of course is based on looks only:
1. Natalie Morales
2. Amy Robach
3. Elizabeth Hasselbeck
4. Ginger Zee
5. Deborah Norville
6. Savannah Guthrie
Lara Spencer is certainly not bad looking but she's looking kinda boney. Kelly Ripa you could pretty much say the same. I like 'em all, so I hate to put anyone down.
Here's my TV announcer sports babes short list. Extremely hot:
1. Jill Arrington
2. Alex Flanagan
3. Allison Hayes
biffbronson 02-27-2014, 02:41 AM I'm glad that I'm not the only one who fails to see the appeal of Matt Lauer. And now with the facial hair, he looks like a "Chia Pet" that someone forgot to water.
His interviews to me come off as bland. Competent but not exceptional. There are much more exciting people out there.
And I agree that Lester Holt and Ann Curry are both very good. Ann is sort of like George Stephanopoulos in that both don't let the insanity get under their skins!
RetroGuy2000 02-27-2014, 03:16 AM Matt Lauer comes across as a slimeball. I won't watch Today while he's on it.

I think the one time Matt Lauer really shone in his interviewing was the one he did with Tom Cruise after Cruise started riding the crazy train with his bizarre bashing of Brooke Shields and OTT displays of love towards Katie Holmes. He needed to be taken down a peg and I think Lauer succeeded. It didn't last long though.
