View Full Version : Has this happened on another sitcom besides Maude and Good Times?
TVFactFan 11-13-2012, 09:31 PM Both were CBS shows and a character was watching another CBS show that was current at the time
Maude was watching the CBS show "Tony Orlando and Dawn"
Willona was watching the CBS show "The Waltons"
Did this happen with any other shows?
McGillicuddy 11-13-2012, 11:27 PM I remember someone watching The Beverly Hillbillies, on Green Acres.
factsoflife 11-14-2012, 11:51 AM Yes, I'm sure this is a fairly common happenstance.
I know on ER this happened a few times; I can think of once when Doug Ross was watching Days of Our Lives.
On Modern Family once, Claire and Haylee were watching soap operas and they showed a clip that was from ABC's "All My Children".
On CBS's "The Nanny" they had an episode where Fran watched "The Young & The Restless" (a CBS show) and visited the set when her friend Heather Biblow got a role on the show.
Recently on ABC's "General Hospital", the character of Todd was watching ABC's "The Chew" or "The Revolution" (I can't recall) and commented on how stupid the show was; referencing the fact that they replaced two soap operas; including "One Life to Live" which that character originated on.
Zoneboy 11-14-2012, 12:18 PM In the 1964 Twilight Zone episode "Black Leather Jackets" the family is watching an episode of To Tell the Truth which was a CBS program at that time.
robyrob 11-14-2012, 12:44 PM on iCarly and Victorious they have had characters watching Drake and Josh (and for Victorious within the same or next episode they had a character from Drake and Josh cross over onto their show)

Oh ok, well either way it wasn't a good example to the question asked:lol:
megamanj2004 11-14-2012, 08:56 PM 227 - Mary, Rose and Pearl was watching Wheel of Fortune (which was on NBC daytime and syndication at the time of the episode)
and they was also watching Love Connection
MRPITT 11-15-2012, 05:53 PM On an episode of Doogie Howser M.D. (ABC) Vinny is watching The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis (CBS).

The question was the same network.
brtcmfn 11-18-2012, 07:34 PM It was not on the same network, but I seem to remember a plug for ABC when on an episode of The Munsters- Herman wanted Grandpa to turn the TV off and Granpa mentioned that he was watching a show about a family wih wacky characters and then the theme song for My three sons is heard.

Both The Munsters and My Three Sons, were on CBS, so this makes sense.
70s show watcher 11-19-2012, 04:23 AM on green acers eb talks about watching ed sullivan and olver talks about lisa watching hee haw wich back then was a cbs show
mr awesome 06-26-2013, 01:47 AM Once on Evening Shade, Guiding Light was being watched in the background.
treky 06-26-2013, 02:05 AM It comes on ABC in philly
yes Sol, but it may not air on an ABC affiliate in every city that shows it. Same with WHEEL OF FORTUNE.

The question was about sitcom characters watching another TV show on the same network but not a Game Show
MacLeaper 06-26-2013, 10:35 AM On ALF, ALF has been seen watching a number of TV shows (and/or it's been mentioned that he was watching a show.) I don't believe any of these shows were ever actually shown so that the viewer could see it though.
Among these are:
Sesame Street (Brian and ALF watch this in the first episode- no visual from the show is seen, but an audio clip is heard.)
Gilligan's Island (There was a whole episode of ALF where the alien is obsessed with watching the show and even dreams that he is on Gilligan's Island- and meets some of the castaways- Gilligan, Skipper, Professor and Mary Ann.)
In the same episode, it's mentioned that after getting over his Gilligan's Island obsession, ALF is now watching Bonanza.
The Bob Newhart Show- ALF mentions watching this show in an episode where he meets a psychologist- that psychologist is actually played by Bill Daily, who was one of Bob Hartley's patients on "The Bob Newhart Show". And when Willie goes to visit with him, he runs into another patient for the pscyhologist, portrayed by Jack Riley. (most likely meant as an appearance of Elliot F. Carlin, but nothing in the episode specifically says that it's him.)
The Dick Van Dyke Show- ALF watches this show as he prepares for the arrival of Willie and Kate's new baby.
The Fugitive- It's implied that ALF has watched this show in one episode where ALF runs off to find Lucky and prove his innocence (since the family thinks he ate Lucky when the cat goes missing.) ALF makes reference to the show in a letter he leaves to the Tanners and Willie, upon reading it, decides that they really should watch more of this show.
However, though some of these shows are from the same network ALF aired on (NBC), none of them were airing at the same time.

I have no clue what you are talking about
MacLeaper 06-26-2013, 11:46 AM I was listing some of the shows that ALF has watched on "ALF". Unfortunately, none of them are from the same time period and on the same network, so I'm sorry it doesn't meet that criteria. I just thought it was worth mentioning as another example of the many TV show sitcom characters that are shown to be watching other TV shows themselves.
"Friends" would be another good example- offhand, I know I've seen the characters (usually Joey and Chandler, but others too) watching various shows- I know "Baywatch" is one that they watched and I think I've also seen "Charlie's Angels" on there at one point and definitely "Three's Company".
IGNTBone 06-26-2013, 12:50 PM On the two-part "The Keys" episode of Seinfeld (NBC), Elaine tries to write a Murphy Brown (CBS) episode, and at the end of one episode, Jerry & Elaine watch Murphy Brown to find Kramer guest-starring on said show.
Not the same network, but still a cool crossover.
factsoflife 06-26-2013, 01:20 PM Jeopardy is a ABC show and the Nanny was a CBS show
nope. Jeopardy is a nationally syndicated series. It can air on any affiliate that wishes to buy the rights to air it.
treky 06-26-2013, 05:58 PM these aren't sitcoms, but once on QUANTUM LEAP Sam was in 1976 and in one scene him and some others were seen watching SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE. QUANTUM LEAP was on NBC and SNL was and still is.
EmoJoe 06-26-2013, 06:09 PM It happened all of the time on The Simpsons. Usually followed by a disparaging remark about Fox.
jmann 06-27-2013, 05:29 AM On the Golden Girls, when Blanche and Dorothy were sick, they fought because Blanche wanted to watch Another World and Dorothy Didn't. This was also on NBC and Rue McClanahan played Caroline Johnson in the early 70's.

The Golden Girls were also seen watching The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw.
Mickey4ever 06-27-2013, 09:48 PM On a King of Queens Doug was watching the Young and the Restless and started dreaming he was in a scene with several of the cast of Y&R. I always LOL whenever I see this episode...he also showed up in a Honeymooners scene....both those shows are/were also CBS, which was the network carrying King of Queens
biffbronson 06-28-2013, 05:26 AM In the run of Seinfeld, don't the characters watch The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (also NBC) on TV at least once? I think maybe they do in the ep where George Wendt complains that the George Costanza character bugged him (wacko).

What episode was that? I don't remember that one.
biffbronson 06-29-2013, 05:48 AM ?
TVFactFan 06-29-2013, 09:36 AM Can we stay on topic and not turn this into a seinfeld thread?
DJM77 06-29-2013, 10:28 AM Seinfeld, 1992, Season 4, ep 1: The Trip, Part 1, with Corbin Bersen and George Wendt playing themselves (also Fred Savage briefly).
From IMDb: When Jerry is asked to appear on The Tonight Show in Los Angeles, George accompanies him to look for Kramer.

Oh okay, I've seen that.
