View Full Version : Why 'Last Man Standing' will face cancellation

"Last Man Standing" made news recently by making some cast changes and when ABC decided to place the show on Fridays in the fall. These changes will not be enough to increase viewership or even hold the current viewership totals. Fans of the show should be very surprised if the show makes it through 2012 without facing cancellation.
Seen it all before
In "Last Man Standing," Tim Allen plays a similar character to his Tim "The Tool Man" Taylor role on "Home Improvement." He is a guy who tries to hold on to as much testosterone as possible and attempts to prove himself as a "man's man" at every opportunity. He goes up against a sensible wife who believes it would be better if he would relax and try to enjoy the more cultural aspects of life, or at least be less narrow-minded about "unmanly" things. During the first season run of the show, the ratings dropped by half as more and more viewers realized they had seen most of the show's formula once before.
Changing Kristin
The executives at ABC decided it would be a strong move for the show to recast the part of Kristin. The eldest daughter on the show will now be played by Amanda Fuller instead of Alexandra Krosney. Instead of recasting the part, the creators should have given the character some character. Eve, the youngest daughter, is a tomboy who attempts to do everything to stay on her father's good side from good grades to taking an interest in the same things he likes. The middle child, Mandy, is a girly-girl who would rather shop than study. She is a caricature of a modern high school girl, but at least she has character.
The creators of "Last Man Standing" tried to give a little more strength to Kristin by having her date Kyle, her father's coworker, but that only lasted a few episodes before the concept disappeared from the show. They failed at making Kristin a relatable character by giving her few comedic lines and even less of an opportunity to show her originality. As per usual, though, actors have to pay for the mistakes of the creators.
Friday move
Shows rarely improve in the ratings after a move unless the move is to one of the prime weekday slots. What is worse is how "Last Man Standing" is being paired with Reba McEntire's new shot "Malibu Country." The preview ABC has placed online makes the new show seem bland and boring. The only programs saving Friday night for ABC will be "Shark Tank" and "What Would You Do?" The first primetime hour of the evening is more mush than meat. The changes ABC made to "Last Man Standing" are a strong indication that this show will be history after the 2012-2013 season, if not sooner.
Mr. Television 11-10-2012, 08:57 AM We'll see how ratings where from last night but the show did pretty well last week.

'Malibu Country' ratings drop as 'Boss' rises
by James Hibberd
A Friday night reversal. After last week’s strong debuts by ABC
comedies Last Man Standing and Malibu Country, this week CBS’
Undercover Boss rose up to overthrow the sitcoms.
Boss had 9 million viewers and a 2.1 adult demo rating, up 33.333333
etc. percent from last week. That not only won 8 p.m. but also came
very close to topping ABC’s Shark Tank (6.7 million, 2.1) at 9 p.m.
Tank slipped from last week’s series high, which is no surprise since
the ABC sitcoms provided a softer lead-in this week, but this is still
its second-biggest number ever.
Last Man Standing (7.3 million, 1.6) was down 20 percent and Malibu
Country (7.2 million, 1.6) fell 30 percent. Here’s how an optimistic
ABC executive would probably look at that: Well, at least they’re
doing the same. In other words, at least the ratings aren’t showing
some big drop from returning show Last Man Standing to the brand new
Reba McEntire comedy. That suggests they make for a good team and that
viewers aren’t rejecting Malibu in particular. And they’re still
coming in second place in the hour.
ABC probably had enough common sense to limit the episode number and move it to Fridays so that it would be harder to ignore the inevitable outrage overall of the changes in regards to both tone (Home Improvement w/ girls to All in the Family 2012-13) and cast members.
irehtman 08-06-2013, 05:45 PM They cannot return Tim to the movies for no reason at all!
They cannot return Tim to the movies for no reason at all!
Why every time, I see you post about this show here, it's virtually the same thing (e.g. Tim Allen needs to return to movies and they need to recast all of his daughters)!?

Tim is already in the movies and bringing him back to another TV series is wrong! It is like turning the clock back, which is erratic!
They should have pick a well-know actor, who did not end up in the movies at all, to play Mike Baxter better!
If they got rid of Alexandra and I know Molly is too dramatic and Kristin is like Alexandra, THEN Molly and Kristin also need to bit get rid of.
I'm sorry that nobody like Amanda, but we cannot get rid of her. Now, we may have to find two more actresses, who act like Amanda, to replace both Molly and Kristin!

I don't find much to watch on Fri. so I'm glad it's on Fri.
comedyfreak 11-02-2013, 05:30 AM I am starting to like the show more now. The Halloween episode was good.
irehtman 03-22-2014, 07:27 AM It was the order from the TV critics to replace Alexandra with Amanda.
JO Sweet Heart 04-29-2014, 10:17 PM ^^^ To me, they are nuts because Alexandra is who made the character of Kristin likeable. Amanda comes across as a person who thinks that they have the answer to every problem which in my opinion can be a major turn off.
God bless you and her and Alexandra always!!! :) :) :)

P.S. Has it been said yet if this show will return for a 4th season?
It was the order from the TV critics to replace Alexandra with Amanda.
And where exactly did you find or get that idea or impression!?
Chocolate Moose 04-30-2014, 01:28 PM This information is almost 2 years old so I am not sure how relevant it is.
Yes, the oldest daughter was replaced and that's a Jump the Shark issue, but since they didn't give her much of a role, I don't see how will make or break the show. I would say that the sister, her boyfriend, and the little boy are last on the list of my favorite characters on this show anyway. They not irritating or annoying, they're just not very visible.
And some of us, like me, have not seen Tim's other shows and we are enjoying him in this one.
The show is almost done for the season, right? The ratings are mostly in and the decision will have to be made.

Ask any of the strict TV critics watching this show and they will tell you seriously!

If they change the oldest daughter, then they should change the two younger daughters immediately.
At the same time, while Tim continues to appear in this show, he should also appearing in new current movies at the same time right now!
I wish they find an actor, who was well-known for a long time, and did not end up in the movies at all, in order to play Mike Baxter correctly than Tim.
Tim did well in such as doing the voice parts on the Toy Story trilogy.

“Fresh Off the Boat” and “Cristela” are tied to “Last Man Standing” because they all come from 20th Century Fox TV. If ABC gets its license fee reduction, all three may be picked up.

diamondmask 10-18-2014, 06:07 PM Well, I'm going to stop recording this show. It's become nothing more than another outlet for the Fox News Tea Party mentality. I'm tired of Tim and his Tea Party mentality and the youngest daughter has become very unlikable. The middle daughter.... no one can be that stupid.
It ran it's course last year. Should not have been renewed.

Is this a good enough of a rationale (https://www.facebook.com/LastManStandingABC/posts/731098696969610?comment_id=731173296962150&offset=0&total_comments=4):
Tim Doyle, the current show runner, is a self described liberal democrat. He is responsible for the political dialogue on the show. He's on record as saying he wants to bring politics into the spotlight to spark debate.. One week there will be an episode with a conservative point of view, and in a couple weeks there will be one with a more liberal viewpoint. He's pretty good about alternating. Sometimes Tim Doyle replies to comments on here, maybe he will this season, as well. Don't worry, it's not entirely slanted towards one side or the other. Tim Allen's character is a right wing, tea party conservative so of course he's going to be vocal about politics. His daughter is a liberal, his daughters boyfriend is a big liberal, and his wife kinda is too.. So there's always differing opinions. The show isn't meant as a jab at the President or the democrats. In a couple weeks there will be some liberal viewpoints probably, then conservative viewers will be the ones complaining on here. I'm an independent so I don't mind the political stuff, I'm a political junkie anyway lol so I like seeing them tackle issues with some back and forth. But it's all in good fun though. It's not meant to disrespect the President.
comedyfreak 10-20-2014, 04:37 AM Ryan, the Son-In-Law is really annoying. It's like they're trying to be like All In The Family with the political debates.
irehtman 01-13-2015, 11:17 PM Bringing Tim Allen back to the TV series was a wrong move because it forces the clock to get turned back, which is against the God's rules.
Right now, I hope Tim is appearing in new movie films before time runs out.

I agree about Eve, she has become hateful and quite unlikeable. I personally love the overtly political stuff. Very non PC.
irehtman 02-26-2015, 08:31 AM If Alexandra is already replaced, then both Molly and Kaitlyn should also get replaced.
I still think Tim should get replaced because he's doing well in movies, going back to TV series level is a WRONG STUPID LAME CHOICE to make.

I thought both Mandy and Eve are also unlikeable, no offense!
liane49 09-30-2015, 10:28 AM Yea me too.

The last movie Tim was in was 2013 and it tanked. And the only movie before that that wasn't an animated voice over was 2010.
Being on TV is a smart choice if you want steady work as an actor. John Goodman didn't make a dumb choice staying on Roseanne even though he had a successful movie career going.
Cyrax 03-13-2016, 02:16 AM It wasn't among the renewed shows last week but it's a reliable Friday performer so hopefully we're getting a 6th season. Depends on Tim Allen's salary of course.
What's surprising is that most of the time some regulars are absent in episodes. This week only the eldest daughter appeared from the three and her husband and kid is like in every 3 episodes...
Yong Fang 03-14-2016, 11:13 PM I live overseas and use a website to watch shows, and noticed that this program is in its 5th season. When it first came on five years or so ago (the OP on this thread is from 2012, so four years, but fifth season), it seems that the critics didn't like it, and it was sent to a Friday time slot which is a graveyard for shows.
I think some shows are what I call "Zombie programs". It is a show that gets little hype, but it stays on and on and on for years and years because the ratings are just enough to get renewed. "All About Jim" is an example of a Zombie Show. Nine seasons. The old show "Alice" on CBS was another. Not that these shows were groundbreaking or great, it just has enough people watching it.
I watched an episode or two when it first came on and did not like it. Not into Tim Allen, and this show to me was sort of like Home Improvement, a show I didn't care for either. Not to be a total bummer, the woman who plays the wife is straight up GORGEOUS.
icecream 03-15-2016, 12:51 AM What I would do if Last Man Standing is renewed: drop Ryan, Boyd, and Ed from the cast and make Patricia Richardson and Jay Leno regulars, their guest appearances have been really good. Ed would retire and Mike would take over as owner of the Outdoor Man. Boyd would be Chuck Cunninghamed and not mentioned again, he doesn't add anything to the show. Ryan could possibly be killed off, he is very irritating.
icecream 03-15-2016, 02:11 PM Jay and Patricia's characters could then hit it off and get married. That would be a hoot! and possible spin-off for when LMS ends
DJM77 03-15-2016, 06:43 PM "All About Jim" is an example of a Zombie Show. Nine seasons.
Do you mean According To Jim?

Was Alice ever truly a "zombie show" (I was only three when it went off the air in 1985 so I don't remember it being on originally)? The show was in the top ten in the Nielsens (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice_(TV_series)#Nielsen_ratings) four times during its run. So it isn't like it was exactly a "modest" hit that kept getting renewed simply because the network had little else to fall back on or it was a "base" hit.
JO Sweet Heart 03-26-2016, 03:12 AM Has it been said yet it this show will be back in the fall or not?

James28 03-26-2016, 04:45 AM In recent years, I have seen scripted series on the U.S. broadcast networks end up in danger of cancellation because of the fact that they're not produced by the network's in-house or sibling production studio. Last Man Standing is produced by 20th Century Fox Television. I think the sitcom's low 18-49 demo ratings and the fact that ABC Studios doesn't produce LMS are the possible reasons why LMS was not on the list of ABC Network's renewals for 2016-17 earlier this month, and, therefore, why LMS is facing cancellation.
king of comedy 03-26-2016, 08:59 AM At least give it a good finale.
tooltime1987 04-11-2016, 11:09 PM I hope Last Man Standing will be back on ABC for Season 6 this fall.
