View Full Version : Cheesiest 1990s Sitcom
For me, its a toss up between Saved by the Bell and Full House. This is not of course saying that these shows weren't entertaining per se, it's just looking back, both of these shows have not aged well.
I think for SBTB you can sum it up it being officially, a '90s show (even though in fairness, it debuted in mid-late '89) always felt like it was several years behind style-wise. I an enjoy SBTB for its (sometimes unintentional, like whenever they tried to be "serious" like the episode involving Jesse taking diet pills) camp value and not so "grounded" depiction of high school life.
With Full House, it's easy to make fun off and look down upon because of it's frequent schmaltzy, "taste like diabetes" (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TastesLikeDiabetes) nature and pedestrian, predictable form of comedy.
jimpickens 11-15-2012, 03:23 AM Married With Children the epitome of cheesy 90s sitcoms
Seinfeld successful but cheesy

You're absolutely right! It's funny, just the other night my roommates and I had another big discussion about how incredibly cheesy the '90s were. We just threw a party dedicated to the decade last Summer!
The '90s were over-the-top cheesy, but that's what made those years so special. It was a great time to be a TV fan.
Full House and Saved By The Bell are the definition of "cheesy" sitcoms, and they never pretended to be anything else. They may not have aged well to some, but it says something that both shows still air 2-4 times daily in 2012, twenty years after they've ended. Many people must still be eating that cheese up, lol.
TVFactFan 11-16-2012, 02:26 AM I;m not going to be foolish and say the entire decade had cheesy shows because of the shows below
Married With Children
Family Matters
Martin
Living Single
Fresh Prince

I do think there were cheesy shows on every single year of the decade (as well as the decades before it). But there were also some very fine, smart series during the '90s.
Family Matters was EXTREMELY cheesy, IMO. It was corny, like all the other Milller-Boyett sitcoms at the time. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air wasn't too far behind.

YES!
UMFaninMD 11-16-2012, 07:27 PM Hell yes to Martin. The reruns still air and I happened to catch one a few nights ago. Sheneneh alone was a big block of cheese.
If animated shows are allowed, definitely Beavis and Butthead, although the scenes where they make fun of music videos can still be laugh out loud funny.

I watched every episode of Martin Live on Fox during highschool and college and have no interest in seeing it on DVD or syndication lol
retrofan05 11-16-2012, 07:38 PM Insert any sitcom that aired on ABC's TGIF

I agree!!
Sister, Sister was cheesy, but it wasn't as over the top corny as others during the time. Nick Freno was awful. Clueless. Smart Guy. Sabrina The Teenage Witch!
Yep, Sherman played Grandpa, and he was great! He was in four episodes.
TVFactFan 11-17-2012, 04:07 PM I agree!!

That first episode he was in his hair was a MESS-lol When he appeared again in the christmas episode he was more clean cut. In the episode Grandpa Campbell his hair looked like he was trying to grow a Afro again knowing he had no hair at all in the middle of his hair:lol:
catlover79 11-17-2012, 07:40 PM Now you just told me something I never knew, wonder if it's on youtube
Yup, I saw some of those eps. Sherman was only 6 years older than his on-screen son, Tim Reid.
PrettyinPink55 11-18-2012, 01:51 AM The Brady Bunch is quite possibly the cheesiest show ever, and I know that it's incredibly cheesy, BUT I LOVE IT!!! I love the cheese!!! I would say The Brady Bunch is even cheesier than Full House!! However, I can't get enough of reruns of The Brady Bunch or Full House for that matter!!!
Recently I've become re-addicted to 7th Heaven on GMC. I'll watch the show and become incredibly frustrated with how cheesy it all is. But I'm hooked...again!!! (I watched it in its original run, but stopped at season 11.) Anyway, watching it again makes me cringe, but at the same time, I can't look away!!!
TVFactFan 11-18-2012, 02:10 AM Yup, I saw some of those eps. Sherman was only 6 years older than his on-screen son, Tim Reid.

Buffyboy323 11-20-2012, 08:24 PM Cheesiest Sitcome of the 1990's: All of them
My exact feelings on most sitcoms from 1950-1990. ;)
Spark Of Spirit 11-20-2012, 11:32 PM All sitcoms have cheese, just to different degrees. IMO, most current sitcoms have nowhere near enough.
PrettyinPink55 11-21-2012, 01:15 AM All sitcoms have cheese, just to different degrees. IMO, most current sitcoms have nowhere near enough.
Good point!! They just don't make them like they used to!! ;)
TVFactFan 11-21-2012, 01:37 AM The cheesiest sitcom since the TV was invented was
FULL HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now that was some cheesy sh*T

I hardly think that Full House was the cheesiest. It was cheesy, but not the cheesiest. As mentioned above, I think The Brady Bunch is cheesier than Full House, but I love all the cheese of both shows!!!
What made Full House even cheesier is that background music they would play in like EVERY episode at the end during a serious scene or during a character's "realization" and "lesson learned."
I wonder if there was an episode of Full House without that music!!!
Buffyboy323 11-21-2012, 02:54 AM All sitcoms have cheese, just to different degrees. IMO, most current sitcoms have nowhere near enough.
I agree. Many sitcoms just take themselves way too seriously now. Too much time spent on being "clever." It's not meant as an insult to those shows (I myself watch several of them). But I do miss my CHEESE.
Spark Of Spirit 11-21-2012, 03:13 PM Yeah, not everything needs to be coated in cheese, but I would love to see more of it! :D
catlover79 11-22-2012, 03:10 PM It was the season 2 episode..."Five of a Kind"
Thanks!!!
