View Full Version : Tv Preachers, Faith Healers and Sylvia Browne: Your Thoughts
jasonbigley 10-31-2012, 11:44 PM I believe in God, but I am skeptical of these TV Preachers. I guess I would consider myself spiritual. I dont consider myself into a certain religion category. Back to the TV Preachers I was watching a clip of Inside Edition and they were doing a story on TV Preachers living like rockstars. They showed the mansions they lived in and the private jets they owned. The one reporter was trying to talk to Kenneth Copeland and he was VERY rude to her. The one woman on this episode said her deceased mother sent ALOT of money to Kenneth Copeland hoping for a miracle cure. Nothing happened. She went on to say that the televangelists office furniture costed almost as much as her house. I was too young to remember this, but when Jimmy Swaggart was in trouble with those prostitutes, that to me would put doubt in my head about these TV preachers. I also watched a clip of James Randi debunking Peter Popoff. He was a so called faith healer who healed members of his church audience. But Mr. Randi exposed Mr, Popoff by proving he used a hidden microphone to get information about the audience members.
Faith healers are another thing to be skeptical of. They claim to heal people but I have read and seen countless clips that prove otherwise. I have heard about people attending to these Faith healing shows. The healer tells them they are healed but 2 hours later or 2 days later, they die. Another thing is, why cant they heal amputees or people with mental diseases? Some of the tricks they use are hiring actors to be in the audience that actually are not sick to begin with that way when the person is "so called healed" it will look like they are healed to the people watching the show. The other trick is the example I gave with Peter Popoff.
Now, onto Sylvia Browne. She told Shawn Hornbecks parents back in 2003 that he was dead. That was false since he turned up alive and well. She told a woman who attended one of her shows to keep her dying son in the hospital because he was going to get better. He died 2 days later and he wanted to be brought home before he died. She also charges $750 for a half hour phone reading- thats ALOT of money (to me) to be charging someone-that alone spells R I P O F F to me.
Yooch 11-01-2012, 12:00 AM As a Christian, I don't automatically dismiss people, but there are many whom I am very skeptical of on TV. My gut tells me the ones who are shady or not, and experience usually proves me right. What a phony will do is usually speak in half-truths. Part of what they say is true, but some of these people are phony through and through.
I think Billy Graham was the real deal though, and legit, but there are many who frankly give me the creeps. For me, I will stick with my local church and try to follow Jesus' teachings best I can. I do believe in prayer, faith and miracles, but I think many of the individual purveyors of these things have another agenda, and it is not a holy one. Just my opinion.

Vahan 11-01-2012, 12:18 AM I can't stand Pat Robertson.
End of story.

Agreed - I even went with my church group to Billy Graham's Crusade when it came to old Munincipal Stadium in Cleveland in June 1994. But Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker, Crespo Dollar...
MickeyMac 11-01-2012, 11:09 AM I gotta admit I like Creflo Dollar.
Goldilocks 11-01-2012, 01:07 PM I like Creflo too. And Joel Osteen is cool.
phoebe7165 11-01-2012, 02:02 PM Sylvia Browne - what a huge piece of BS!!! I would watch her on Montel Williams just to hear what fake and phony garbage would come out of her mouth.
MrCleveland 11-02-2012, 09:54 AM I like Creflo too. And Joel Osteen is cool.
Not a fan of either.
I don't watch any TV Preacher shows, but I think I'll stick to Ernest Angely and Charles Stanley. (Ever hear about The Word Church in Cleveland)?
And who's Sylvia Browne?
Regulus 11-02-2012, 10:43 AM I went to Texas for my annual Amusement Park-Hopping Trip in 2011. I attended a service at Joel Osteen's "Megachurch" in Houston just for the fun of it, I "relieved" them of a Christmas Tree Ornament before merrily going about my way. Been there, done that! :D

I like Billy Graham. I think he's the best. The rest of them...believe at your own risk.
Sadly, Billy Graham has gone off the deep end in recent years, even lowering his long-held standards in the name of politics. Terrible.
catlover79 11-02-2012, 01:23 PM Not a fan of either.

Sylvia Browne is a famous psychic. Personally, I think Miss Cleo had more credibility than her.   Speaking of Cleveland preachers, I did like Knute Larsen from The Chapel. He didn't have a show (that I know of), but did many TV ads for The Chapel. I also saw/read interviews with him and he also seems like the real deal. Last I heard, I think he moved out of Ohio.
MickeyMac 11-02-2012, 03:23 PM I cant possibly put TV ministers and psychics in the same category. I could say more, but I wont go into details here.
robyrob 11-02-2012, 06:39 PM personally i think they are all con men and thieves that should be locked up.
if you want to donate money to a church give it to your local church, not some charlatan on TV that drives a $300,000 car and lives in a multi-million dollar house.
The Flying Dutchmans 11-02-2012, 08:53 PM It's not God or faith they believe in, it's the all mighty dollar. Just look at the churches they are building with the money. Some of them look like Las Vegas Casinos.

bmasters9 11-15-2012, 05:11 AM I can't stand Pat Robertson.
End of story.
I can't stand him either. I can't even stand Ralph Sexton of Trinity Baptist Church in Asheville, NC.
ponytail 11-15-2012, 06:18 AM I watch Joel Osteen every Sunday. I like his positive messages.
Sylvia Brown, I don't believe her. She predicts that in 2019, Calif. will have the BIG quake. She always looks grouchy.
sunshinefizzy 11-15-2012, 10:27 AM I'm a fan of Joel Osteen and I'm a fan of Joyce Meyer. I like Sylvia, too. Sure there are some televangelists and "pshycics" that give others a bad name and you can tell who they are. I have a feeling these people are the real deal. Oh, another one I like is Theresa Caputo from Long Isalnd Medium. She seems very genuine.

Not so! When I "Relieve" somebody of a souvenir I purchase it. May God STRIKE ME DEAD if I'm telling a lie.
veggie-tari-jenn 02-07-2015, 12:25 AM I am not sure if they are real or not or if I believe...but I do enjoy psychics...I have gone to psychics...read books, watched tv shows and to me its just a fun experience...and you never know...
Lexi98 02-07-2015, 09:29 AM There are some T.V. Preachers that just deliver a message each week and I have no problem with that. The ones I have problems are the supposed faith healers that seem to prey on the sick and those who already don't have money. Those are the false prophets just doing it for the money.

I agree with you.... Preach it Lexi!
MrCleveland 02-07-2015, 01:28 PM The Cash Cow Preacher that gets me is...Oral Roberts!
What kind of parent calls their kid "Oral"? His name is made fun of because of the first name itself!
The other is Pat Robertson of The 700 Club!
Lexi98 02-07-2015, 01:34 PM The ones that get me the most are the ones that keep on making prediction dates of the return of Jesus. I don't know how people can even take them serious at all since they have changed their predictions over and over after they are wrong. The last time I checked Jesus hasn't returned.

Jesus never left...... he's with us every day.......

Lexi98 02-07-2015, 01:54 PM Wow, the only contact I have ever come in with a Jehovah's Witness is when they have come to my parents door. They certainly have some bizarre beliefs, especially the thought that Jesus was disintegrated in the tomb. I have never heard of that from Sunday School or the Bible before in my life. Also the belief that he will destroy the Earth and kill off everyone except of course the devout Jehovah's Witness.
Hawkee 12-30-2018, 04:35 AM The reason why TV preachers have become so popular and have been for many years is a lot of them have been in the business and hope to become big successes to people who hope to be inspired and gather a huge fanbase and some preachers even have written bibles and books and prayer diaries to help people learn more about God and what he can do for you. Take for instance one preacher that has become a huge household name is Dr. Fredrick K.C. Price and he is best known for starting a church called The Faithdome and ever since The Faithdome was open to the public Fredrick and his wife Betty Price became popular than ever and Fredrick started out as a TV preacher and had his own show Hour Of Power and is still a mega celebrity who has many Christian and Gospel singers become his well deserved fans and has authored many books that have become bestsellers in bookstores everywhere. Another star that has become huge and successful is Stormie Ormartian and you may noticed that her husband Michael Omartian is also a acclaimed Christian singer and is well known for cowriting Donna Summer's 1983 hit She Works Hard For The Money but Stormie Omartian is also an author who does tours and also is a TV preacher though she doesn't have her very own show yet but Stormie Omartian's stories and prayer books are great for inspiration to read. Another group of TV preachers that have taken the world by storm is an Austrailan group called Hillsong and ever since they first began as a singing group they became a strong successful group and they became more popular when they launched their very own cable channel and have done preaching and singing on tours ever since. But I have a feeling that since Billy Graham passed away there will be a whole new breed of TV preachers making their marks in the world. I have seen Sylvia Browne once and I cannot figure out why she is so popular and her books are hugely popular too and take up the shelves in the book section of Walmart and I don't know how in the world she became a huge celebrity. I have also seen Peter Popoff's annoying commercials advertising Peter's miracle holy water that claims that if you have it "miracles" such as cures from illnesses to money troubles and stress will be over due to this water but I don't believe it actually works. But as long as these TV preachers become even more popular they are mostly in it to be huge celebrities and become popular as Mother Teresa or the late Billy Graham

tlc38tlc38 12-30-2018, 09:20 AM The best way to sum up this thread is a song by Rhonda Vincent called “Blue Sky Cathedral”. Such a great song!
SitcomsHeydayfan 12-30-2018, 10:11 AM Sylvia Browne - what a huge piece of BS!!! I would watch her on Montel Williams just to hear what fake and phony garbage would come out of her mouth.
Hard to believe it's been over 5 years since she died! She was hugely popular at one point which shows how naive the public can be.
From her Wiki page:
"Browne cultivated a large following: in 2007, she had a four-year waiting list for readings by telephone. That same year, hundreds of people joined Browne on a cruise, each paying thousands of dollars for psychic readings. Many of her books became staples on The New York Times Best Seller list."
People were such suckers they even bought her books to the Best seller level! She got her biggest prediction wrong. She said she'd die at 88 but died at 77!
Tubehead 01-04-2019, 02:05 AM i also don't liked the 700 club!! cause at the end the guys praying saying some one has the flu some one is having back surgery i pray for you!! i also stopped watching tbn cause they have liked marathon to rise money almost every weekend!! I don’t liked
Joel Osteen he's just an feel good preacher !!
SitcomsHeydayfan 01-04-2019, 05:12 AM How much do you all want to bet that if you could give a truth serum that actually revealed what people thought then 99.99% of all these major religious figures would ADMIT they KNOW they're spewing pure NONSENSE?
The other .01% are clinically DELUSIONAL!.
Hawkee 01-06-2019, 02:36 AM Another famous psychic that is well known and famous is a guy named Tony and he is well known for always correct predictions about the world and also claims to speak to the spirits of late celebrities such as The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and Michael Jackson and even has his own advice column in Globe called Dear Tony where people write letters to Tony with questions like "Please tell my grandmother where I can find her wedding ring that she gave me?" or "Can you tell my father that I hope he's happy now in heaven" and every time that people get answers to the letters Tony reads that have questions like the two questions I used as an example Tony always has an answer like "Your father asked me to tell you he loves you and misses you every day but he hopes you think of him each day" and if people write Tony with a simple prediction he always almost has a correct answer to everyday questions. Juanita Bynum is another famous preacher who is also a famous gospel singer and has even tried her hand at being a TV preacher and has authored many books and prayer diaries and has even toured Africa as an traveling preacher too and her books are worth a look at to see what Juanita Bynum is like. I do not know why The 700 Club is popular but it seems to attract a huge fanbase of celebrities such as the late Alan Thicke Dale Earnhardt Jr. country singer Randy Travis Amy Grant former NASCAR driver Richard Petty and many other celebrities have appeared on The 700 Club as well offering prayers to people around the world and it still continues to be a hit. But as long as TV preachers still exist on TV they will continue to inspire people everywhere

Babalu 01-07-2019, 06:36 AM I'm not religious but if you are, fine.
What I don't like are faith healers and psychics. Every one is fake.
Take a look at some Youtube videos with The Amazing Randi, a magician that exposed fake psychics. The fake psychic John Edwards had a TV show that I would watch for a few minutes occasionally. I don't know if it's still on. Boy I'd love to have 5 minutes with him in front of a crowd. He wouldn't like it though.
