View Full Version : NYC Hurriciane Sandy Survivors
Vahan 10-31-2012, 09:09 AM I heard that the death toll there is currently 22.
I know at least three people in NYC who are also posters here: *ROGER*, Brian_Damage, and JamesG. I know *ROGER* is okay, but I haven't heard from the other two yet.
I know JamesG was fully prepared for this, but I'm still worried. Please pray for his and Brian's safety, and for all the other NYC SO posters.
*ROGER* 10-31-2012, 11:12 AM I hope Brian and James are okay.
I'm still waiting to hear back from the insurance company on the damage to my home.
There was a horrible fire near me in Breezy Point, Queens. A lot of damage there. Really, everything is just about gone in that area...very heartbreaking. What's also so sad is the death and injuries.
I hope Brian and James are able to sign in soon.
Vahan 10-31-2012, 11:16 AM I know James lives in Brooklyn, but I'm not sure about Brian.
And I'm also not sure how badly Brooklyn was damaged, or how many people died there, compared to all the other boroughs in NYC. What I do know, of course, is that the power is down there, so at least as far as JamesG is concerned, that could be why we haven't heard from him yet.
Mr. Television 10-31-2012, 03:07 PM My prayers go to all the people in harms way. I hope Brian and James and everyone is safe from all this.
catlover79 11-01-2012, 12:53 AM I hope Brian and James are okay.

I can only imagine how horrible it must be over there. :( Has anyone heard from Pav? I know he lives in NJ.
PZelda 11-01-2012, 11:07 AM Brian is in Staten Island, NY... Last I heard, SI was pretty much underwater. They still may be without power yet. I checked his FB, and aside from one post from a friend there earlier this week, he hasn't checked in. I hope he's OK also.
The Red Hook neighborhood in Brooklyn got slammed pretty hard with flooding... But other than that I think most of Brooklyn made it out OK.
The Flying Dutchmans 11-01-2012, 06:14 PM I wish em the best. I hope all is well with them. I know I live in Central NY and the damn thing went right around us. I couldn't believe it either, it was like a miracle or something. We got barely any rain. The only hole in the storm was directly over Syracuse NY where I live. Go figure.
Regulus 11-01-2012, 10:06 PM My prayers go out to those affected by this storm. Bear in mind Sandy was a Minimal Hurricane!
Mr. Television 11-02-2012, 01:09 AM I can only imagine how horrible it must be over there. :( Has anyone heard from Pav? I know he lives in NJ.
I'm wondering about Pav too. He hasn't even been doing the Blog. I hope he's okay.
Vahan 11-02-2012, 01:12 AM I don't even live in the east coast, or anywhere near it, but already, this thing is making me feel scared.
I'm hearing different reports on the current death toll as of today.
I wish there was a list of Hurricane Sandy victims right about now to be sure.
With regards to Brooklyn, last I heard, at least 7 people were dead there, including a young Jewish couple (not sure about the other 5).
Over at Staten Island, 19 are dead there right now.
PZelda 11-02-2012, 11:00 AM I heard that much of NJ is still without power... Could explain Pav's absence. (Reminder: He's in Linden, NJ, which is ~20 miles from NYC) I did a quick skim of the news for his town... I'm not seeing much news, just a bunch of articles about the refineries in Linden shutting down before Sandy and the gas shortages there. I hope he's OK too!
JamesG 11-02-2012, 03:37 PM Hey everyone. Thank you for the well wishes.
I've had no major damage, but I've been w/o power since approx. 4:30 P.M. Monday. I'm at an internet cafe so I'll talk in more detail when everything's back to normal.
Basically our street's power comes from above ground cables and a huge tree one block from my home fell into a house knocking out the cables. ConEd can't fix anything until they get that tree out of there. It won't be an easy job since there are live wires so they can't "just chop".
It's the city's responsibility to get that tree out of there and nobody is getting any definite updates on when the work will begin. I took photos of this so I'll post them later on.
I've been doing A LOT of reading to help pass the time. Showering and shaving at a friend's home because I have no hot water. I have tons of food, batteries, candles, lights, blankets... so I'm ok as far as supplies go.
I'll check in when I can, but I read in today's NY Daily News that those with above ground cables may not get their power until Veteran's Day (Nov. 11th).

Glad to hear you're doing okay. Maybe your power will be up & running before the 11th. There are a lot of Tennessee volunteers from the Red Cross, local churches & the power companies that are coming to help out. I bet other states are sending help too.

I'm glad to see that you're okay James. Its sad about your power though. Hopefully it'll be fixed before too long.
Vahan 11-02-2012, 05:44 PM Thank god you're all right, James.
Let's hope Brian's okay, too.
Family Ties Forever! 11-02-2012, 07:50 PM That's good that everyone that has been able to check in is ok.

Yes, electricity crews have been sent from Texas as well to help.
OH Nuts! 11-03-2012, 01:29 AM I live in Manhattan and lost power for four days. A bit inconvenient, but very pale in comparison to what some have/are going through. Had to walk a few miles to get decent food, but that wasn't too bad. On low floor so I could walk down. Thank God for flashlights!

It's great to see you back Rich. I'm glad that you're okay. :)
PZelda 11-03-2012, 10:50 AM Phew... Glad to hear you are OK, James and Rich! :)
JamesG 11-03-2012, 01:53 PM The latest is that I may be going to the Marriott in Downtown Brooklyn or at a vacant apt. one of my friends is offering me. I'll know by tonight on what I'm definitely doing.
I booked the Marriott for 2 nights, but want to check out this apt. first. The hotel had a lot of cancellations due to the Marathon being called off.
catlover79 11-04-2012, 05:42 PM Glad you're OK, JamesG and Rich!!! Thanks for checking in and hope things get better for you sooner rather than later. :bighug:
catlover79 11-04-2012, 05:43 PM Thank god you're all right, James.
Let's hope Brian's okay, too.
Yes...and Pav.
Dr. John Becker 11-04-2012, 08:23 PM My prayers go out to those affected by this storm. Bear in mind Sandy was a Minimal Hurricane!
Right before this storm hit land, it transitioned to a Post Tropical Storm. With these storms, you go by the MB of pressure more then the category number to get an idea of what kind of damage they will produce. The pressure officially measured during Superstorm Sandy dropped to 948 mb in Atlantic City, NJ which IIRC was the lowest non tropical storm pressure reading ever recorded in the US. The storm at one time was almost 1,000 miles wide. While the winds may have been cat 1, the damage and storm surge was more like that of a cat 3.
There's your weather update from SO's resident amateur weatherman.
Dr. John Becker 11-04-2012, 08:30 PM Back to the much more important thread topic, I hope Brian Damage checks in soon too.
Vahan 11-04-2012, 08:51 PM Here's another one I just remembered: Emily (a.k.a. Liza).
She actually lives in Rochester, NY though, not New York City. She hadn't posted in a long time, and had just recently returned to these forums after a long hiatus.
Regulus 11-04-2012, 09:36 PM Sandy was BOTH a Hurricane and a Nor'easter!
Dr. John Becker 11-04-2012, 10:36 PM Sandy was BOTH a Hurricane and a Nor'easter!
Sandy was a hybrid storm. You are correct that this was both a hurricane that had combined with a Nor'easter. This type of storm is a once every 50 years or so storm that may never happen again in our lifetimes.
Next week, another Nor'easter will likely impact the areas still cleaning up from Sandy. This storm will not be near as strong as Sandy, however.

She's a regular on Facebook, so I know she's OK. :D
catlover79 11-05-2012, 12:38 AM Pav just posted on his ABC Upfront thread a few hours ago, so now we know he's OK (he lives in NJ). Thank God!!
JamesG 11-06-2012, 08:34 PM I've been in constant contact with 311 and ConEd. They started taking down the huge tree that knocked the cables out today and got about a quarter of it down. They may have to stop working for now because NYC has a rain/snow storm predicted until Thursday.
ConEd says we may get power back by Fri-Sat, but I'm not so sure since they can't start working until the tree is gone.

Thanks for the update - keep us posted!! I hope you will be able to go home to a home with power soon.
JamesG 11-08-2012, 06:09 PM I'm back in power!!!
I made a trip from the hotel back to my neighborhood to do my laundry because it was way cheaper over the hotel doing it. So I was hanging out in an internet cafe just passing time, and then when I went to check on my clothes I saw lights on coming from my block.
So, I'm finally back in business. I will probably stay at the hotel tonight so I can get all of my things together and let the heat warm the house overnight.
Regulus 11-08-2012, 06:21 PM Tomorrow is what I call "HESS Friday", it's the day the HESS Stations sell their Toy Trucks (It's a Helicopter this year). Thanks to the Car Dealers I'm getting six of them this year for :D FREE :D. Yesterday I got word that my Sister's Church is organizing a Toy Drive for Sandy Victims, I'm giving them one of my Trucks, along with some other Toys I picked up for free with a Gift Card I got in the mail.

YAY!!!!!! party: :bouncers :jig:
JamesG 12-03-2012, 05:57 AM I finally got around to uploading the photos.
Here's the tree that knocked out my power for 2 weeks during Sandy.
You can see here that the huge tree fell on top of two houses.

Here's a shot of the tree from the sidewalk. You can also see the pole that got knocked over too.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/LIFE114-1-1.jpg
Here's a shot looking directly under the tree. You can tell the tree has been dead for years.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/LIFE116-1-1.jpg
A shot of one of the houses. The pole actually prevented the tree from getting closer to the house. No major damage done to the house itself.
http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/LIFE123-1.jpg
A shot of the other house. Also, no major damage done. The gutters got a little banged up.

This is a few houses down from the big tree. This is a house on the corner where another pole fell over.

The bottom of the pole showing you how it cracked.

Vahan 12-03-2012, 09:18 AM James, sorry I didn't ask earlier, but you didn't lose anything that was of value to you, did you (like your movie and TV show collection for example)?
JamesG 12-03-2012, 02:28 PM James, sorry I didn't ask earlier, but you didn't lose anything that was of value to you, did you (like your movie and TV show collection for example)?
Thankfully, no. I just had power failure. Many people have/had it way worse than I did.
When I got back home I decided to throw out whatever food was still in my fridge/freezer and re-stock.
Vahan 12-03-2012, 02:37 PM BTW, thanks for sharing the photos. Those are quite devastating.
Side-note: As I mentioned in another thread, I'm actually gonna vacation in New York City for about a day or so sometime next year. I live all the way in Southern California in L.A., and I have rarely ventured to other parts of the United States.
I anxiously look forward to vacationing in The Big Apple. I'm sure it will be 100% (or at least close to that) cleaned up from Hurricane Sandy, by the time I vacation there.
MrCleveland 12-04-2012, 10:19 PM I sooooo hope the people in New York will have a Merry Christmas.
Did Rockefeller Center have a special dedication for the people who suffered from Hurricane Sandy?
