View Full Version : Why did Clair have to act like she was Cliff's mother?
TVFactFan 10-06-2012, 06:25 PM Watching the episode when Theo sneaks to Coackroach house to get a special dish and then he is trying to eat it in the basement so he can hide from clair:confused:
Wasn't he a grown a$$ man and free to eat whatever he wanted? A wife can suggest healthier options but shouldn't be FORCING her husband to do anything. That was the one thing that always irritated me about this show
*ROGER* 10-06-2012, 06:31 PM I never bought into how Claire was supposed to be the perfect wife and mother. I hated her holier than thou attitude. I found her to be controlling and a shrew.

I know, she was perfect in every way. She knew everything which irritated the hell out of me.
*ROGER* 10-06-2012, 06:39 PM I hated those FIRM, NASTY faces that Claire would make when she was trying to get her stupid opinions or demands accross. Honestly, I don't know how Cliff put up with her. I would have run away from home!

And she always wanted to present herself as perfect to her kids. Like when she wanted to test theo on Casear and then lied to Cliff and said she had not read the book in years
PrettyinPink55 10-08-2012, 07:52 PM Clair rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. On other message boards I've read that people just don't like her character at all because she was a "know it all." Personally, I liked her character, but it would've been neat to see Clair be wrong even if just once!! Although I loved how she was always right over Cliff!!!

I really didn't mind the Claire Character in the first Two season or the last Two seasons. But in season 3-6 She has that Bossy, Nagging, Know-It-all Nose in the Air attitude that bugged me about her and that is one thing the things I did not like about this show and her her character. I did not like the way that she forced Cliff on a diet fine she wanted him to be healthy and eat better which is nothing wrong with that, but she shouldn't be forcing him to eat healthy and putting him on a strict diet which made her seem controlling! She could have just told Cliff that she was concern about his eating habits and that she wanted him to start eating better and healthier. She should not have forced him to stop eating stuff he liked(Moggies, Pizza, Etc). if Eaten in Moderation it won't kill you. And it was not like he was in bad shape to start with anyway. Other then that she was okay.
One thing I notice was that On Home Improvement Jill Taylor seem like a White 'Claire Huxtables ' in a small way in how she thought that she was Mrs Know it all and thought that she was right. But a least Jill Taylor let Tim be right from time to time and let him eat bad food that he like! She wasn't also Naggy like Claire Huxtable or Later Debra Barone.
The Diet storyline(Claire Nagging on Cliff about Food/ Diet) Got tiring pretty quickly And I was glad when the Writers in later seasons began doing trhat storyline and Claire was not as bad about what Cliff was eating and was Nagging on him all the time. If you notice that in season 8 She was not on his case all the time and she began to be less bossy and Naggy. Season 8 Claire O always thought was kind of like Ruth Lucas.

Interesting comparison. Although Tim Taylor was a far cry from Cliff Huxtable!!!
Clair just had a dominating personality and wasn't afraid to let that be known!! Vanessa was kinda bossy too. I wonder if she got it from Clair. And then Sondra was bossy with Elvin too!!! Denise didn't really boss Martin around...I don't think...

Bossy and sexy huh? LOL
*ROGER* 10-10-2012, 07:22 PM Bossy and sexy huh? LOL
Bossy women are a big turn off for me. I do like women who can give an opinion or suggestion without demanding their man to submit. Claire was BOSSY AND DEMANDING! I used to think she was pretty hot looking until she opened up that mouth of hers.
Mr. Television 10-10-2012, 07:26 PM The Cosby Show was very anti-men. lol
*ROGER* 10-10-2012, 07:31 PM The Cosby Show was very anti-men. lol
All those hags did was bash men. It was very insulting and disgraceful.
PrettyinPink55 10-11-2012, 12:39 AM It was quite opposite from the days of "father-knows-best."
cleverfun3000 10-11-2012, 06:44 AM Cliff put up with Claire for the ONLY reason (besides money) a man would put
up with a domineering, bossy woman - he got to be intimate with her on a
regular basis. She was NOT the type of woman to grant sexual niceties unless
Cliff was in her good graces. He was hopelessly out of his league in marrying
her, so would keep her anyway he could, even if it means bowing down.

ThomasE 10-11-2012, 09:16 AM Ya'll have gotten crazy deep with this this fun couple.
TVFactFan 10-11-2012, 02:44 PM I believe he only stood up to her in the episode when Theo was arrested for being in a speeding car

LOL, I think I'm the only person who liked Claire. I loved her no-nonsense attitude.

No, I liked her too!!! I never really realized people had a problem with her until I went on message boards about The Cosby Show.
McGillicuddy 10-12-2012, 02:30 PM I never bought into how Claire was supposed to be the perfect wife and mother. I hated her holier than thou attitude. I found her to be controlling and a shrew.
It seems Clair's "Holier than Thou" persona is brought up often, and is a "turn off" with many people. For some reason, when she acted this way with the kids, or especially Cliff, I found it humerous, and endearing. I think it showed how much she cared about the "well-being" of her family members.
I also sensed that there were "boundries" with how far she could go before Cliff would let her know, she over-stepped. Also usually it was apparent that Clair "softened up" by the end of the episode.
Furienna 11-03-2012, 08:27 AM Well, Claire often gets on my nerves as well. She's so perfect, and everybody has to do as she says.
liane49 04-24-2013, 11:43 AM I know, she was perfect in every way. She knew everything which irritated the hell out of me.
Cliff always seemed to let her boss him around so she got away with it.
Tap Dancer 10-16-2013, 08:57 PM Just once I wanted him to say, "I'm a grown man and I'll eat whatever the Hell I want." There's nothing more pathetic than a man who has to hide things.

Wasn't like he was drinking alcohol lol
ladybug1980 10-26-2013, 11:27 PM I hated when she "strangled" Cliff on occasion. That's just not cool. I don't know if Cliff couldn't actually breathe when this happened, and Cliff did sound hilarious when this happened, but if the shoe were on the other foot and the husband did this to the wife, it would be called abuse.
Furienna 10-26-2013, 11:49 PM Indeed it would, and rightfully so.

Glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way.
