View Full Version : What's the most obscure sitcom you can remember?
Morbius53 06-27-2000, 06:12 PM We all grew up watching sitcoms that lasted a season or less, yet still remember to this day. Does anyone recall...
The Double Life of Henry Phyfe
Broadside
The Pruitts of South Hampton
Accidental Family
Room for One More
The Hathaways
Hank
I'm Dickens, He's Fenster
Where's Huddles? (animated)
silentbri 06-28-2000, 01:45 PM Whoa... never hear dof any of those ones! Most of the one-season wonders I remember, I don't actually remember the names of. Like the show with Dave Coulier as a super hero trapped in the real world... I even had the comic book version of the show! I alos remember a show about an American who shared his apartment with his non-english speaking Russian cousin (this was pre-Perfect Strangers), and another show that had Arsenio Hall as a genie? Or were all of these just weird dreams I had...

Perderabo 06-28-2000, 03:17 PM The only one on your list I recall is "Double life of Henry Phyfe". I actually miss that show.
But I also remember "Occasional Wife"! And I'll bet that I'm the only one.
Freakzilla 06-28-2000, 03:18 PM The most obscure sitcom I can think of is a show called "What a Dummy". It was a syndicated show sort of like "ALF", except it had a red-haired talking dummy instead of an alien. One of the stars of this show was Stephen Dorff, who has had some good movie roles since then and would probably like this show never to be mentioned again.
silentbri 06-28-2000, 08:58 PM Hey, speaking of ALF rip-offs, wasn't there a show that featured a fire-breathing Dragon-puppet? What was that one called?

Shumway 07-19-2000, 03:41 PM How about "We got it made" (back around 83-84) and "Lottery" (same era)...Lottery used to come on right after Webster....jeez..lol
silentbri 07-19-2000, 06:03 PM Hmmm... didn't "Lottery" fall under the category of "Drama" rather than "Sit-Com"?

The T 07-19-2000, 11:22 PM How about Teen angel (I think maybe one season) and You wish (I Think half a season or so)? Now I really liked those! Hilarious! I was a religious watcher of those.
see ya~The T.
silentbri 07-20-2000, 01:00 PM Okay, too many names and not enough detail... I'm sure I would remember some of these shows, but going by just the name is impossible! What was "You Wish"? Could anybody put up some brief descriptions of these shows? Thanks!

The T 07-20-2000, 09:30 PM You wish was about this Genie guy and this lady (The Lady that Played marsha on the brady bunch...wait she was on teen angel) found the bottle and he became hers and she got any wish she wanted not just 3. It was really cool. Teen Angel was about this teenager that ate a poisonous hamburger and died and then came back to life and watched over his best friend and his best friend was the only one that could see him. They were both really funny.

Shumway 07-21-2000, 01:17 AM Ate a poisonous hamburger and came back to watch over his friend? AMAZING! I cant believe a quality show like that didnt last! LOL....actually, it sounds better than most garbage thats on tv now..........
The T 07-21-2000, 10:05 AM Yeah that's part of the reason I liked it! It wasn't GARBAGE!!! I guess I could say that those were on my list of top 10 favorite shows! I actually liked you wish better than teen angel but teen angel was really funny too.

Chachinator 08-01-2000, 08:20 PM oh, i got a few obscure ones.
me and the chimp - 70's sitcom co-created by
Alan Alda of all people!
You Again? - 80's sitcom, starred a young
John Stamos and an old Jack
Klugman
Out of Control - not really a sitcom, more
of a kids news show on
nickelodeon for a short time
but Dave Coullier hosted!
oh, i got plenty more, those are just a few of the best, i thought.
LaverneShirley 08-02-2000, 01:24 AM Okay, I've heard of Hank! It was one of the ones Garry Marshall created, right? And so was Me and the Chimp...in his autobiography he always mentions the "ill-fated me and the chimp" but doesn't mention what it was about. Has anyone seen Hey Landlord? It was on in the 60's (I've never seen it, but it was a Garry Marshall series that lasted 36 episodes) and it was about....huh. I just finished his book for the second time today and I forgot about it already... I LOVED the show Baby Talk! It was so cute! Okay, I'm finished now... Wait! Does anyone remember On Our Own (I think that's what it was called). It was on TGIF I think 5, 6, maybe 7 years ago and it was about a black family. It reminded me a little of Step by Step...

"Well, Laverne is sort of childish"
"Childish? Childish? COming from a grown woman who throws tea parties for her stuffed cat!"
"Well at least I don't sew L's on everything I wear!"
"Well that would be pretty stupid considering your name's Shirley!"
silentbri 08-02-2000, 10:08 PM Just remembered one of my favorite "Obscure" sit-coms... Eric Idle (of Monty Python fame) in "Nearly Departed... the story of a dead english couple who haunt a house that is now occupied by Americans. Anyone seen it?

IHPSDM 08-03-2000, 07:23 PM I remember a short-lived sitcom on Fox, that appeared in the early or mid-90s, that was VERY obscure. I don't remember the name of the show, but the general plot line centered around the fact that there was a nuclear holocaust, and the lead character survives because he was in a Volvo or something, and the "running joke" of the pilot is that Volvos can survive the impact of a Nuclear Holocaust or some nonsense like that. Then the lead character wonders around, and finds some shack. There, he finds five or six other people, and they presume that they are the only people on the planet to have survived. Does anyone else remember this show? I know it only lasted half a season at the most, but it was on Sunday nights in the 9:30/8:30 CST timeslot.
silentbri 08-04-2000, 12:26 PM THe show was called "WHOOPS!", and they tried to market in in just about every way possible... they tried to convince people it was the next Gilligans Island. Then they tried to say it was a sci-fi comedy. Then they decided it would be precautionary tale... I tell ya, I think they had more marketing concepts than they had actual episodes of the show!

IHPSDM 08-04-2000, 03:13 PM Thanks a lot SilentBri! I wasn't expecting anyone to remember that show, but you came through with a title and everything! Thanks man.
Perderabo 08-07-2000, 11:10 AM I hesitate to post in this thread, but sadly the "obscure" adjecture applies...
Does anyone remember "My Living Doll"? This sitcom is from the early '60's. It stars the beautiful Julie Newmar as a "robot" built by the army. Some army dude got to bring her home and teach her about being human.
I never saw it again after the first run. I wish some channel would bring it back.

LaverneShirley 08-07-2000, 11:52 AM So THAT'S where they got the Gilligan's Island episode title Gilligan's Living Doll!! (Sorry....)

Domestic Life - aired on CBS in 1984 for about 10 episodes. Martin Mull starred and sang the theme song. Christian Brackett-Zika, Megan Follows, and Hoyt Axton were in it as well...
Perderabo 08-10-2000, 12:36 PM In some cases, it's good that a sitcom was never heard from again. One such sitcom is "Rango" which stunk to high Heaven despite the fact that starred the very talented Tim Conway in the title role.
If any execs from the cable channels are lurking, please let this stay dead.
I remember a short-lived show call "Star of The Family." Brian Dennehy (The Fighting Fitzgeralds) played the father of a female teenage country singer. He spent episodes trying to make her life as normal as possible, if I can recall. It aired around the early 1980's.

callmetootie 06-12-2001, 11:29 AM Supertrain was sooo obscure.

MARFAR104 06-12-2001, 06:56 PM HOW ABOUT THE TIM CONWAY COMEDY/ WESTERN "RANGO" THAT RAN IN THE MIDDLE 60'S?
PomeranzFan1 06-12-2001, 07:22 PM Jennifer Slept Here. In ran for less than a year in 1984. It starred Ann Jillian as the ghost of a famous movie star and Glenn Scarpelli as the boy she always followed around.

Balki: "Now we are so happy, we do the Dance of Joy!" :D
dawsongirl 06-13-2001, 09:20 PM I remember Baby Talk! I think I still have an episode on tape somewhere. Now, Julia Duffy was in that right? Because my episode has a brunette playing the mother. Was she first or second?
Anyone remember Good Morning Miss Bliss, the precursor to Saved by the Bell?
dawsongirl 06-13-2001, 09:25 PM Okay, this wasn't a sitcom, but how about the new Route 66? Lasted only about 4 episodes in 1993, but for some dumb reason I vaguely remember watching that. I suppose it would have made a lot more sense had I seen the first Rte. 66.
Anyone else ever see this?
dawsongirl 06-15-2001, 12:55 AM Just thought of another. The Lucie Arnaz Show from 1985.
dawsongirl 06-15-2001, 11:22 PM I know this is my 4th post in a row, but the more I think about this, the more shows I come up with.
The remake of Adam-12 from 1989. For the most part, it only aired in CA and NY.
Kalen Q! 06-17-2001, 11:53 AM What about that early 90s Munsters revival on Fox? I remember I liked watching that, but I'm guessing its obscure enough for me to mention.
Kalen Q! 06-17-2001, 11:55 AM Oh yeah, and Wait Till Your Father Gets Home, an animated sitcom.
Sitcomwriter 06-17-2001, 09:30 PM I never saw it but how about Watt on Earth? It starred Jessica Simpson (Yes "The" Jessica Simpson) as Zoey.I know almost nothing about the show except that it was only on for 45 episodes and was billed as a Sci-fi Sitcom.I've gotta find tapes of that.
godsprincess_76 06-17-2001, 10:03 PM How about Eerie Indiana (not really a comedy), the Mommies and Sister Kate (with Jason Priestly)
EKWROCKS 07-11-2001, 01:44 AM i love sister kate and i had forgotten all about it thanks for reminding me!! it was about orphans!!
TVLanFan 08-19-2001, 12:32 PM Morbius -
I vaguely remember "Room For One More". Actually, I don't remember the show, but I remember the end of the theme song played during the closing credits (the last line of which was "There's always room for one more"). I have no idea what the show itself was about.
I do remember watching "Where's Huddles" (animated series) in the late 60s/early 70s.
Never saw any of the other shows you listed though, although I remember hearing about "I'm Dickens/He's Fenster".
kandk 08-21-2001, 01:05 PM Here's a couple, both from mid 80's i think.
One starred Anne Jillian(i think that was her name - she later developed breast cancer), and she had some kind of powers - like she was a witch or ghost maybe.
Another was a sitcom that starred the wife from "Home Improvement" and was set in the old west i think. Cowboys and indians type stuff if i remember correctly.
kandk 08-21-2001, 01:10 PM Just remembered another from late 80's maybe early 90's. Starred Donna Pescow from 70's sitcom "Angie".
I can't remember title, but it was about a mother who had a kid with an alien. The mother and daughter lived on earth, and the daughter would contact her father with some device and get advice on all her earthly problems. I think she had the power to stop time also. Anyone remember title?
factsoflife 08-21-2001, 02:43 PM Fifteen- a teen soap opera that aired on nickelodeon in like 1989 or something, it was a great show that was canceled.
Bless this house- a 1994 cbs show starring Kathy Moriaty.
Living Dolls- leah remini starred in this pre-king of queens show about teenage models. Halle Berry was also in this show.
------------------
Jo- Sexy Lingere?
Andy- Yep, Sexy lingerie that's you, that's what i named you.
Tootie- Oh, say you didn't
Jo- I Will not be known as sexy lingerie.
" Gross-a-roo"- Punky Brewster.

I remember that one. They were in the guys room and found the buger under the bed or something. He decided to eat it to see if it was any good and it killed him. It was really a funny show.
