View Full Version : Why "GMA" is beating "Today"
http://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffbercovici/2012/09/18/forget-savannah-vs-ann-heres-why-gma-is-beating-today/
What's happened this year, says Jeff Bercovici, is that "Today" played it safe while ABC took risks. And those who take risks, get rewarded.
TVFactFan 09-20-2012, 12:00 AM I can't understand why GMA is winning because to me the show sucks. I don't like NONE of the anchors
Give me AL, natalie and Savannah any day of the week over those GMA clowns
howierules86 09-20-2012, 09:52 PM ^Right now, I'm more of a Today Show fan myself as well (the first three hours only, that is), but I wouldn't go as far as to call the GMA people "clowns" (especially not during this tough time that Robin Roberts is going through right now).

Solomon is very clueless. He watches something for 30 seconds one day and bases it on that. He has no idea what is going on. Robin Roberts has more charisma and fans than anyone on morning television. And she is the most popular morning host on network TV for the past few years. He is the clown for calling people like her a clown. Like I said before, he needs to change his username. He has no facts.
I think GMA crew is fun, fresh, upbeat and has chemistry. Something the Today Show has not had AT ALL since Meredith Vierra left. Also GMA turns it on for serious news as well. They have Stephanopolous...who does Today have for serious news? Matt Lauer?? I pass by both morning shows every morning. The crowd used to be so big for Today...now it is nothing compared to what they have at GMA in Times Square.

Actually I wasn't referring to Robin, I was referring to the woman with the blonde hair and the guy with the dark hair. Those are the two i see the most when i turn to GMA

Josh Elliott is from ESPN SportsCenter. How could you not know him? You're no sports fan either. And Lara Spencer is just the entertainment news anchor...
Obviously you're not watching the show.

He is a nobody to me so that's why i didnt remember his name
Mario500 09-21-2012, 10:32 AM I wish Pavan and TVFactFan had not used the word "clown" as an insult during this discussion. Also I wish TVFactFan had properly identified Josh Elliot and Lara Spencer by their proper names and not referred to Josh Elliot as a "nobody". Even if TVFactFan could not remember their names, he could have searched for information about them before posting here since he saw them on "Good Morning America".

If I couldn't remember his name then that confirmed that he has not arrived.
Myles 09-21-2012, 11:52 AM In the past I preferred to watch the Today Show, but now I enjoy GMA. Their crew has much better chemistry.
gilligan fanatic 09-21-2012, 11:56 AM My parents always watched GMA so by default that is kind of why perfer it I guess. Does anyone watch CBS' morning show?

It's the best results since the mid-90s.

Probably because they are a bunch of kids on the set acting goofy

You keep saying they will catch up to GMA. Still hasn't happened. Bunch of kids? You're calling Robin Roberts and George goofy? Get glasses or a clue man. They all have chemistry. That is seriously lacking on Today Show.

The removal of Ann Curry is probably what hurt the Today show
howierules86 04-05-2013, 07:39 AM The removal of Ann Curry is probably what hurt the Today show
As long as The Today Show doesn't remove the lovely Natalie Morales, I'll be fine.
yankeesrj12 04-05-2013, 12:57 PM I watched Today up until Katie Couric left and then I switched to Good Morning America.
Today is failing because, put simply, Matt Lauer is a major-douche. His Q score is an 8 or something - down from the 25 he had just a year and a half ago. People don't like how Ann Curry's departure was handled and I personally believe he had a part in her firing.
Until Matt is gone, Today is going to struggle.
Matt Lauer is a huge liability for Today. He's gone from being well-liked to universally disliked; the Bryant Gumbel of the 21st Century. After he threw Ann Curry under the bus, Today deserves its downward spiral. The only thing that will save the show is the right kind of major overhaul.
I actually prefer CBS This Morning to Today and GMA. Hopefully we'll see it grow in viewership in the next few years.

It's easy to forget they have a morning show since all the talk is about GMA and the Today show

Yeah, it usually gets buried by the other two. It's probably the best of CBS' many attempts at a morning, show though. I really like the format, though I wish it was as "hard news" as it claims to be.

The Today show is coming up in the ratings
Pavan 07-08-2013, 11:14 PM If the margin is the highest in 21 years, Today is coming up in the ratings? Solomon, look at the actual numbers first...

I posted another thread explaining that the Today show is closing the gap
Pavan 07-08-2013, 11:23 PM Yeah one week, because of a Paula Deen interview. This is the entire quarter, bigger sample that one random week. Go back to watching Rhoda.

The point is they are still close even with Savannah coming on board a year ago
Pavan 07-08-2013, 11:34 PM The last FULL quarter was the widest margin in over 21 years and you're getting excited because of one week. It has nothing to do with Savannah. Stop thinking with you know what and use the brain.
icecream 07-09-2013, 12:28 AM My grandparents were fans of Today for a long time. But I found out they switched to Good Morning America last year.

The new media blitz, launching Monday with the tag line "Rise to Shine," is aimed at bringing "Today" back to the top of the morning show ratings.

simmytbone 01-07-2014, 12:30 PM Well let me start off by saying this:
as sad it may seems, The Today Show will always be known as "America's 1st Family" as it is the 1st Morning News Program on Television and the longest since it's been over 60 years and Good Morning America is abc's answer to The Today Show and they've been on the air for almost 40 years and during those almost 40 years, both shows have been competitors
Good Morning America and the Today Show back in its heyday were great, but the 80's is when both shows shined
I mean on The Today Show, you had Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley along with Willard Scott and the late John Palmer doing the news as well as Movie Critic Gene Shalit (who is still alive @ the age of 87)
and Good Morning America had David Hartman, Charles Gibson, Weatherman Spencer Christian and of course, Joan Lunden who was on the show for 17 years
CBS This Morning had Harry Smith and Kathleen Sullivan and later Paula Zahn as well as Mark McEwen, but that's another story @ another time
But ever since the 90's, when Jane Pauley left The Today Show on New Year's Eve 1989, that's when it all changed as Good Morning America would dominate successfully in the ratings over The Today Show during the 1st half of that decade, even when the people over @ NBC News hired a young Primary Anchor in Deborah Norville of Inside Edition Fame to replace Jane, the ratings struggled and even CBS This Morning was struggling big time when they replaced Kathleen Sullivan with Paula Zahn after CBS fired her b/c she called CBS the Cheap Broadcasting System
Charles Gibson and Joan Lunden were a hard team to beat, but GMA stumbled from its top spot in late 1995, falling to second place behind Today (in what would begin a 16-year streak as the top-rated morning news program for that show which began the week of December 11, 1995). Lunden began to discuss working less, and mentioned to network executives that the morning schedule is the hardest in the business. abc executives promised Lunden a prime time program; Behind Closed Doors would premiere on the network in 1996
On September 5, 1997, Lunden decided to step down as host of Good Morning America after 17 years and was replaced by Lisa McRee. The pairing of Gibson and McRee fared well in the ratings. However, ratings sharply declined when Gibson also left the show to make way for Kevin Newman in 1998. With McRee and Newman as anchors, long-time viewers of Good Morning America switched to Today, whose ratings skyrocketed
When The Today Show celebrated its 50th Anniversary on January 14, 2002, it got HUGE Ratings
On November 3, 2005, Good Morning America celebrated its 30th anniversary with retrospectives on and clips from the show's history and by decorating Times Square. Former co-hosts Hartman and Lunden, along with former meteorologist Spencer Christian were among the guests of honor. Hartman signed off the show that day with his trademark close "From all of us, make it a good day." That same day, Good Morning America became the first network morning news program to begin broadcasting in high definition
The Today Show had Katie and Matt and later Meredith and Matt and the ratings were still strong, but ever since Meredith left The Today Show, Ann Curry moved to Primary News Anchor along with Matt Lauer, but then the ratings started to tank and I'm not putting the blame on Ann, but ever since Matt Lauer threw Ann under the bus, that's when I lost interest in The Today Show and yes, Robin Roberts and George Stephanopoulos are the best thing going on GMA and you also got Josh Elliott and Lara Spencer and you got the newest member of GMA in Ginger Zee doing the weather and she does a great job and I think that she will be awesome for years to come
Yes, Matt Lauer has become the 21st Century Bryant Gumbel as both of them are not well liked and PLEASE, don't get me started on that egomaniac Kathie Lee Gifford
and even though it was good to see Bryant and Jane reunited last week, The Today Show still struggled in the ratings b/c something else was missing from that show and we're still trying to figure out what it is
mets82 01-08-2014, 04:21 PM I wasn't really a big news guy up until a couple of years ago. I honestly watch Today's open, then CBS' the world in 90 seconds, which is really good, then watch ABC.
Although, I'll be honest as long as Ginger Zee, Amy Robach, Natalie Morales and Norah O' Donnell are on my tv, I will watch all three news shows.

Willbo 02-14-2014, 11:08 AM Natalie Morales is beautiful. She is the reason I watch Today. GMA gets to silly for me at times.
TVFactFan 02-14-2014, 03:10 PM Natalie Morales is beautiful. She is the reason I watch Today. GMA gets to silly for me at times.
And the other day she was dancing on TV which was way too much for me to see
LOL. She is already sexy and then she starts dancing???
mets82 02-20-2014, 06:04 PM Btw, did you see Amy Robach is in Sochi? She cut her hair. Is that because she is sick?
simmytbone 02-21-2014, 04:02 AM Well let me say this:
I don't watch The Today Show on Weekdays, but every once in a while, I'll watch The Today Show on Weekends
I do love me some Erica Hill and that's it
